In claim of developing ecologically-friendly and low cost polymeric materials, some polymer scientists and engineers have focused on improving the properties of polymer composites with natural fibers. One typical example of these natural fibers currently used as reinforcements in low load-bearing polymer composites is bovine fiber which is traditionally a waste from slaughterhouse. However, nature has designed natural fibers with anisotropic properties which may not augur well for the development of polymer composites with guaranteed field-proven reliability. Nonetheless, unlike vegetal fibers, most animal fibers can be alternatively exploited for keratinous applications. In the present study, the tensile properties, crude protein contents and variations in elemental distribution of hair fibers obtained from three breeds of bovine found in Nigeria were investigated. The hair fibers were characterized by ultimate testing machine, proximate analysis and scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. Superlative Young’s modulus and tensile strength among the fibers were found to be 0.98989 GPa and 0.56158 MPa, respectively. The determined crude protein contents of the fibers ranged between 35% and 40%. Also, single hair fibers from each bovine breed showed significant variations in elemental distribution along their longitudinal sections which translates to anisotropic chemical and mechanical properties. However, the mean spectral values of the principal elements that constitute amino acids in the fibers are in the same range with that of human hair fibers with a successful record of keratinous applications.

The present work focused on corrosion inhibition of AA6063 type Al-Mg-Si alloy in sodium chloride （NaCI） solution with a silicon carbide inhibitor, using the potentiodynamic electrochemical method. The aluminium alloy surface morphology was examined, in the as-received and as-corroded in the un-inhibited state, with scanning electron microscopy equipped with energy dispersive spectroscopy （SEM-EDS）. The results obtained via linear polarization indicated a high corrosion potential for the unprotected as-received alloy. Equally, inhibition efficiency as high as 98.82% at 10.0 g/v silicon carbide addition was obtained with increased polarization resistance fRy）, while the current density reduced significantly for inhibited samples compared to the un-inhibited aluminium alloy. The adsorption mechanism of the inhibitor aluminium alloy follows the Langmuir adsorption isotherm. This shows that the corrosion rate of aluminium alloy with silicon carbide in NaCI environment decreased significantly with addition of the inhibitor.

The extra gonadal consequences of Turner’s Syndrome (TS) also pose risks to patients, namely cardiovascular. Clinicians should maintain a level of clinical suspicion for TS in patients with primary amenorrhea even without typical physical characteristics. Interestingly, TS has uncommon variant forms with varying degrees of clinical manifestations. Even so, all TS and TS variants maintain a high risk for cardiovascular events. Therefore, early TS diagnosis is of utmost importance. Here, we present a case of a young, African-American woman with primary amenorrhea with few overt clinical signs of TS. With high clinical suspicion, genetic testing is pursued and demonstrates the TS variant. This is important because variant forms have a similar increased risk of premature hypertension, diabetes, and aortic dissection.

Process engineering has been seen as one of the vital tools for improving surface coating phenomena for advance application. In an attempt to improve the mechanical, physical and chemical performance of the steel structure for ex-tended application, Zn-CeO2/ZnCeO2-Al2SiO5 thin film composite was fabri-cated on mild steel using direct electrolytic route. Process variation of Al2SiO5 particulate ranges from 5 to 15 g per litre. The embedded coating was charac-terized using Scanning electron microscope (SEM). The chemical effect of the developed alloy was characterized through linear potentiodynamic polarization experiment and the performances of samples were examined in simulated 3.5% sodium chloride. The microhardness verification study proves that there is sig-nificant improvement in hardness trend. The tribological assessment indicated that there is less plastic deformation as a result of the counter body. In all, Zn-CeO2/Zn-CeO2-Al2SiO5 exhibits good stability, with agglomeration and great built up of crystal at the interface.

This study is aimed at evaluating groundwater potential of Ipinsa-Okeodu area, near Akure, Southwestern Nigeria. A multi-criteria model was developed for achieving this aim;the GRT model which is based on geology of each sounding point, resistivity, and thickness of the aquifer across the study area was successfully used to evaluate the aquifer potential of the area for future groundwater development programme in the area. Geophysical investigation involving vertical electrical sounding was carried out across the study area. A total of one hundred and two (102) vertical electrical soundings (VES) data were acquired using Schlumberger array with maximum half-current electrode separation of 150 m. Three to five geoelectric layers were delineated across the study area. The predominant curve types are KH, H, K and A. The maps of aquifer layer resistivity and aquifer layer thickness were generated and synthesized with the geology of the study area in producing the GRT model map/groundwater potential map. The groundwater potential map shows that the area is characterized by five groundwater potential zones;poor, low, moderate, good and high. The northwestern regions, north central and part of the southwestern regions are high groundwater potential zones, the northern and most part of southeastern zone are of moderate potential, while small portion in the southeastern and northern zones are of low groundwater potential.

Background: Carbonic anhydrase (CA) is a ubiquitous enzyme catalyzing the reversible hydration of CO2 to and H+. CA plays a crucial role in CO2 transport, acid-base balance, and in linking local acidosis to O2 unloading from hemoglobin and also facilitates lactate shuttling across the monocarboxylate transporters (MCT). The study aimed to investigate the influence of hyperglycemia on erythrocyte carbonic anhydrase activity and lactic acid in type II diabetic patients. Method: Red blood cell carbonic anhydrase activity was determined in washed lysed-hemolysate by the action of the enzyme on the substrate p-nitrophenyl acetate. The absorbance of released p-nitrophenol was recorded at 345 nm. Glycated Hemoglobin was determined by ion exchange method (Spectrum Diagnostic Kit). Blood glucose, lactate, cholesterol and triglyceride were determined using Accutrend GCT meter (Roche, Germany) with cobias® test strips. Results: The present study showed that hyperglycemia significantly (p < 0.05) increased both erythrocyte carbonic anhydrase activity and blood lactate level in type II diabetic patients. Conclusion: We may conclude that hyperglycemia may be responsible for the increased activity of carbonic anhydrase activity and blood lactate concentration.

Synthesis and fungicidal activity of some sulphide derivatives of O-phenyl-N-substituted phenylcarbamates

Monosulphides of O-phenyl-N-substituted phenylcar- bamates were prepared by the reaction between O- phenyl-N-substituted phenylcarbamates and sulph- ur dichloride while the corresponding disulphides were prepared by the reaction between O-phenyl-N- substituted phenylcarbamates and sulphur monoch- loride. The synthesized compounds were characte-rized by elemental analysis, thin layer chromatogra-phy (TLC), Fourier-transform infrared, 1H and 13C nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopic techniques. In vitro fungicidal assay of these sulphides against Fusarium oxysporum, Aspergillus niger, Aspergillus flavus and Rhizopus stolonifer showed that they were more fungicidal than their parent carbamates. The synthesized sulphides were more active towards As-pergillus niger and Aspergillus flavus. There was little or no variations in the fungicidal activities of the synthesized monosulphides and disulphides of O-phen- yl-N-substituted phenyl carbamates.

Nursery experiment was carried out at Ibadan, Nigeria between May 2004 and October 2005 to evaluate the use of plantain as a permanent cocoa nursery shade crop. Ibadan is located between latitude 07?10'N and longitude 03?52'E and lies at an altitude of about 122 metres above the sea level. The treatments consisted of six shade regimes provided by plantain spaced at 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, 2.5 and, 3.1 m apart, the control had no shade at all (open planted cocoa). Each treatment had one hundred cocoa seedlings planted in polythene bag filled with topsoil and laid out in a randomized complete block design (RCBD) in three replications. Data on vegetative growth of cocoa seedlings were taken on monthly basis, while plantain height, girth, number of leaves, bunch weight, number of fingers and market value of each treatment were evaluated. Light intensity under each of the treatment was taken using light meter. Result showed that cocoa seedlings under plantain shade planted at 1.0 m and 1.5 m apart were higher in height relative to control and other treatments considered, shade regimes provided by spacing at 3.1 × 3.1 m and 2.5 m × 2.5 m apart on the other hand produced higher values for stem diameter and leaf area respectively compared to other treatments, the least values were recorded under 1.0 m × 1.0 m apart. Seedlings under 2.5 m and 3.1 m spacing were significantly (p > 0.05) higher for these parameters than other treatments. Higher incidence of weed was also recorded from the control. Plantain bunch obtained from 2.5 m and 3.1 m apart was higher than other treatments in terms of weight, number of fingers and market value, while the control (no plantain shade) did not give any economic returns. Hence, plantain planted at spacing of 2.5 m or 3.1 m apart could be recommended to the cocoa farmers in Nigeria as nursery shade instead of conventional method of using bamboo and palm fronds yearly without any additional economic return.
