methoprene, a juvenile hormone （JH） analog, is a widely used insecticide that also accelerates behavioral development in honey bees （Apis mellifera）. JH regulates the transition from nursing to foraging in adult worker bees, and treatment with JH or methoprene have both been shown to induce precocious foraging. To determine how methoprene changes honey bee behavior, we compared JH titers ofmethoprene-treated and untreated bees. Behavioral observations confirmed that methoprene treatment significantly increased the number of precocious foragers in 3 out of 4 colonies. In only 1 out of 4 colonies, however, was there a significant difference in JH titers between the methoprene- treated and control bees. Further, in all 4 colonies, there was no significant differences in JH titers between precocious and normal-aged foragers. These results suggest that methoprene did not directly affect the endogenous JH secreted by corpora allata. Because methoprene caused early foraging without changing workers＇ JH titers, we conclude that methoprene most likely acts directly on the JH receptors as a substitute for JH.

Ultraviolet(UV)A signals(320-400 nm)are important in mate choice in numerous *** sensitivity for UV signals is not only assumed to be costly,but also expected to be a function of the prevailing ecological ***,those signals are favored by selection that efficiently reach the receiver.A decisive factor for color signaling is the lighting environment,especially in aquatic habitats,as the visibility of signals,and thus costs and benefits,are instantaneously influenced by *** ecological aspects of color signal evolution are relatively well-studied,there is little data on specific effects of environmental UV-light conditions on signaling at these shorter *** studied wild-caught gravid female 3-spined sticklebacks Gasterosteus aculeatus of 2 photic habitat types(tea-stained and clear-water lakes),possessing great variation in their UV *** 2 treatments,tea-stained and clear-water,preferences for males viewed under UV-present(UV-1-)and UV-absent(UV-)conditions were tested.A preference for males under UV+conditions was found for females from both habitat types,thus stressing the significance of UV signals in stickleback's mate choice ***,females from both habitat types showed the most pronounced preferences for males under UV-h conditions under clear-water test ***,reflectance measurements revealed that the carotenoid-based orange-red breeding coloration in wild-caught males of both habitat types differed significantly in color intensity(higher in clear-water males)and hue(more red shifted in clear-water males)while no significant differences in UV coloration were *** differential reflection patterns in longer wavelengths suggest that sticklebacks of both habitat types have adapted to the respective water *** of UV signals in a sexual context to ambient light conditions in both behavior and coloration seem less evident.

The decentralization of the energy sector＇s infrastructure is commonly understood as an important step towards an efficient and sustainable energy system. However, technical measures only have a limited impact on the systems goals. The decentralization of decision-making, the empowerment of households and the occurrence of prosumer communities require more human-centric approaches to meet future challenges; the application of the subsidiarity principle and decentralization seems inevitable but also unclear in its implementation in an energy system, the cooperation behavior of community members gains in importance and the design of prosumer communities must overcome economic problems. This article emphasizes the human-centered challenges which go along with prosumer communities. We apply economic principles to reveal major problems which go with the shifts in energy-related decision-making towards prosumers and integrate behavioral science for prosumer community design. We highlight the importance of energy as an interpersonal construct; a view on energy which will gain in importance within a prosumer communities shaped network.

Heterosis, or hybrid vigour, describes the superior performance of heterozygous hybrid individuals compared with their homozygous parental inbred lines. Although heterosis has been intensively used in plant breeding, the molecular and genetic mechanism underlying the phenomenon remains largely unknown. During the last years numerous laboratories initiated genomic approaches with new, often genome wide tools toward the elucidation of the molecular basis of heterosis. Various studies described differences in genome organization and gene expression of hybrids and their parental inbred lines. In maize, a considerable loss of co-linearity at many loci between different inbred lines was observed. Expression profile comparisons between inbred lines and hybrids revealed complex transcriptional networks specific for different developmental stages and tissues mainly in maize (Zea mays), rice (Oryza sativa) and Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana). Allele-specific expression data resolved the relative parental contributions and allowed figuring out the regulatory basis for expression variation in hybrids. Integrating all these complex expression data might help to get an idea about the molecular basis of heterosis. Thereby molecular processes during early seed development shortly after fertilization might be of particular importance, because the allelic interplay has to be coordinated after the unification of two diverse genomes and these processes might contribute to establish the basis for future performance of the sporophyte. Besides these fundamental interests in the molecular basis and manifestation of hybrid vigour applied aspects of the phenomenon are of high importance to support plant breeding and agriculture. Prediction methods are of special interest to identify the most promising parental lines of hybrid varieties, greatly reducing the financial effort and increasing the efficiency to develop new hybrid cultivars. A mechanism of intermediate filament disassembly regulation is proposed in which disas- sembly is regulated by the amount of proteins assembled in networks. It is mso hypothe- sized that a delay might exist between regulation and actum disassembly. Under realistic biological conditions of assembly and disassembly, it is shown that such a delay is harm- less and does not destabilize the organization of intermediate filaments in networks. However, for high rates of disassembly, the model predicts that delay can destabilize the organization, with the intermediate filament material oscillating between organizations mainly in networks and in nonfilamentous particles.

N^6-methyladenosine(m^6 A) is an essential RNA modification that regulates key cellular processes, including stem cell renewal,cellular differentiation, and response to DNA damage. Unsurprisingly, aberrant m^6 A methylation has been implicated in the development and maintenance of diverse human cancers. Altered m^6 A levels affect RNA processing, mRNA degradation, and translation of mRNAs into proteins, thereby disrupting gene expression regulation and promoting tumorigenesis. Recent studies have reported that the abnormal expression of m^6 A regulatory enzymes affects m^6 A abundance and consequently dysregulates the expression of tumor suppressor genes and oncogenes, including mYC, SOCS2, ADAm19, and PTEN. In this review, we discuss the specific roles of m^6 A missing space "writers", "erasers", and "readers" in normal physiology and how their altered expression promotes tumorigenesis. We also describe the potential of exploiting the aberrant expression of these enzymes for cancer diagnosis, prognosis, and the development of novel therapies.

The broad availability of high throughput nanostructure fabrication is essential for advancement in nanoscale science. Large-scale manufacturing developed by the semiconductor industry is often too resource-intensive for medium scale laboratory prototyping. We demonstrate the inexpensive wafer scale direct- write of Ge and Si nanostructures with a 4-inch mask aligner retrofitted with a conducting microstructured stamp. A bias applied between the stamp and an underlying silicon substrate results in the reaction of diphenylgermane and diphenylsilane precursors at the stamp--substrate interface to yield the direct- write of Ge and Si nanostructures in determined locations. With the increasing number of outdated mask aligners available from the semiconductor industry and an extensive library of liquid precursors, this strategy provides facile, inexpensive, wafer scale semiconductor direct-write for applications such as electronics, photonics, and photovoltaics.
