Systematic literature review of the antitumor effect of octreotide in neuroendocrine tumors

AIm To provide a comprehensive examination of the existing evidence of the antitumor effect of long-acting octreotide in neuroendocrine tumors(NETs).mETHODS A systematic literature review of clinical trials and observational studies was conducted in Pubm ed, EmBASE, and Cochrane through January 18, 2017. Conference abstracts for 2015 and 2016 from 5 scientific meetings were also *** Of 41 articles/abstracts identified, 13 unique studies compared octreotide with active or no treatment. Two of the 13 studies were clinical trials; the remaining were observational studies. The phase 3 Placebo-Controlled, Double-Blind, Prospective, Randomized Study of the Effect of Octreotide long-acting repeatable(LAR) in the Control of Tumor Growth in Patients with metastaticNeuroendocrine midgut Tumors clinical trial showed that long-acting octreotide significantly prolonged time to tumor progression compared with placebo in patients with functionally active and inactive metastatic midgut NETs; no statistically significant difference in overall survival(OS) was observed, possibly due to the crossover of placebo patients to octreotide. Retrospective observational studies found that long-acting octreotide use was associated with significantly longer OS than no octreotide use for patients with distant metastases although not for those with local/regional disease. CONCLUSION The clinical trial and observational studies with informative evidence support long-acting octreotide's antitumor effect on time to tumor progression and OS. This review showed the rarity of existing studies assessing octreotide's antitumor effect and recommends that future research is warranted.

Aims Invasive species alter the composition and function of communities,threatening the conservation of important ecosystems *** savanna ecosystems,fire plays a key role by modifying biogeochemical cycles and shaping the composition and structure of vegetation *** many studies have examined the long-term effects of fire frequency on grassland communities,few studies have examined the relationship between fire regime and woody species *** The Serengeti ecosystem is an ecologically and economically valuable natural resource in East Africa whose conservation is currently threatened by a variety of factors,including invasive *** determined the abundance of maerua subcordata,a noxious woody shrub,in three different regions of the Serengeti National Park,*** then examined the influence of fire frequency,developed through the use of 7 years of moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer(mODIS)imagery,on *** *** Findings In all regions,burned transects had significantly greater abundances of *** compared to unburned ***,the number of times each transect burned from 2000 to 2006 had a significant positive effect on the abundance of *** and the number of years since a transect last burned had a significant negative relationship with *** results are particularly important as this species provides little forage value and is potentially toxic to wildlife and *** studies are needed to determine the ecological consequences of increasing *** abundance,as the potential expansion of noxious shrubs into protected areas of important conservation status is of serious concern.

After a decade of periodic truss-,plate-,and shell-based architectures having dominated the design of metamaterials,we introduce the non-periodic class of spinodoid *** by natural self-assembly processes,spinodoid metamaterials are a close approximation of microstructures observed during spinodal phase *** theoretical parametrization is so intriguingly simple that one can bypass costly phase-field simulations and obtain a rich and seamlessly tunable property ***,breaking with the periodicity of classical metamaterials is the enabling factor to the large property space and the ability to introduce seamless functional *** introduce an efficient and robust machine learning technique for the inverse design of(meta-)materials which,when applied to spinodoid topologies,enables us to generate uniform and functionally graded cellular mechanical metamaterials with tailored direction-dependent(anisotropic)stiffness and *** specifically present biomimetic artificial bone architectures that not only reproduce the properties of trabecular bone accurately but also even geometrically resemble natural bone.

Habitat abundances of a cricket-parasitizing wasp <i>Rhopalosoma nearcticum</i>(Hymenoptera: Rhopalosomatidae) in a United States mid-Atlantic park

Adults of the nocturnal, cricket-parasitizing wasp Rhopalosoma nearcticum flew in Dyke marsh Wildlife Preserve (DmWP) from late June through late September, based on a 2-year, malaise-trap sample of 617 individuals from three habitats. These wasps were significantly more abundant in the floodplain forest compared to the tidal, freshwater marsh and forest-marsh ecotone. Females were more likely to be in the ecotone and marsh than males. The pooled sample from all three habitats was significantly male biased. This study provides baseline information on R. nearcticum that can be used in assessing the health of the DmWP entomofauna in view of global change, accelerating DmWP erosion and marsh loss, invasive species, and other threats to this fragile preserve.

Inflammation-associated microsatellite alterations:mechanisms and significance in the prognosis of patients with colorectal cancer

microsatellite alterations within genomic DNA frameshift as a result of defective DNA mismatch repair(mmR). About 15% of sporadic colorectal cancers(CRCs) manifest hypermethylation of the DNA mmR gene mLH1, resulting in mono-and di-nucleotide frameshifts to classify it as microsatellite instability-high(mSI-H) and hypermutated, and due to frameshifts at coding microsatellites generating neo-antigens, produce a robust protective immune response that can be enhanced with immune checkpoint blockade. more commonly, approximately 50% of sporadic nonmSI-H CRCs demonstrate frameshifts at di-and tetra-nucleotide microsatellites to classify it as mSIlow/elevated microsatellite alterations at selected tetranucleotide repeats(EmAST) as a result of functional somatic inactivation of the DNA mmR protein mSH3 via a nuclear-to-cytosolic displacement. The trigger for mSH3 displacement appears to be inflammation and/or oxidative stress, and unlike mSI-H CRC patients, patients with mSI-L/EmAST CRCs show poor prognosis. These inflammatory-associated microsatellite alterations are a consequence of the local tumor microenvironment, and in theory, if the microenvironment is manipulated to lower inflammation, the microsatellite alterations and mSH3 dysfunction should be corrected. Here we describe the mechanisms and significance of inflammatory-associated microsatellite alterations, and propose three areas to deeply explore the consequences and prevention of inflammation's effect upon the DNA mmR system.

The aim of this paper is to solve numerically the inverse problem of reconstructing small amplitude perturbations in the magnetic permeability of a dielectric material from partial or total dynamic boundary measurements. Our numerical algorithm is based on the resolution of the time-dependent maxwell equations, an exact controllability method and Fourier inversion for localizing the perturbations. Two-dimensional numerical experiments illustrate the performance of the reconstruction method for different configurations even in the case of limited-view data.

Analysis of drop deformation dynamics in turbulent flow

Drop breakage and coalescence influence the particle formation in liquid-liquid dispersions. In order to reduce the influencing factors of the whole dispersion process, single drops where coalescence processes can be neglected were analyzed in this work. Drops passing the turbulent vicinity of a single stirrer blade were investi- gated by high-speed imaging. In order to gain a statistically relevant amount of drops passing the area of interest and corresponding breakage events, at least 1600 droplets were considered for each parameter set of this work. A specially developed fully automatic image analysis based on matlab was used for the evaluation of the resulting high amount of image data. This allowed the elimination of the time-consuming manual analysis and further- more, allowed the objective evaluation of the drops＇ behavior. Different deformation parameters were consid- ered in order to describe the drop deformation dynamics properly. Regarding the ratio of both main particle axes （0axes）, which was therefore approximated through an ellipse, allowed the determination of very small de- viations from the spherical shape. The perimeter of the particle （0peri） was used for the description of highly de- formed shapes. In this work the results of a higher viscosity paraffin oil （ηd =127 mPa. s） and a low viscosity solvent （petroleum, ηd = 1.7 mPa-s） are presented with and without the addition of SDS to the continuous water phase. All results show that the experimentally determined oscillation but also deformation times underlie a wide spreading. Drop deformations significantly increased not only with increasing droplet viscosity, but also with decreasing interfacial tension. Highly deformed particles of one droplet species were more likely to break than more or less spherical particles.
