Due to the accumulation of an enormous amount of plastic waste from municipal and industrial sources in landfills,landfill leachate is becoming a significant reservoir of *** release of microplastics from landfill leachate into the environment can have undesirable effects on humans and *** study provides the state of the science regarding the source,detection,occurrence,and remediation of microplastics in landfill leachate based on a comprehensive review of the scientific literature,mostly in the recent *** waste and wastewater treatment residue are the primary sources of microplastics in landfill *** concentration in raw and treated landfill leachate varied between 0-382 and 0-2.7 items l^(−1).Microplastics in raw landfill leachate are largely attributable to local plastic waste production and solid waste management ***,polystyrene,and polypropylene are the most prevalent microplastic polymers in landfill *** though the colors of microplastics are primarily determined by their parent plastic waste,the predominance of light-colored microplastics in landfill leachate indicates long-term *** identified morphologies of microplastics in leachate from all published sources contain fiber and fragments the *** on the treatment method,leachate treatment processes can achieve microplastic removal rates between 3%and 100%.The review also provides unique perspectives on microplastics in landfill leachate in terms of remediation,final disposal,fate and transport among engineering systems,and source reduction,*** landfill-wastewater treatment plant loop and bioreactor landfills present unique difficulties and opportunities for managing microplastics induced by landfill leachate.

Discovery of the inhibitor of DNA binding 1 as a novel marker for radioresistance in pancreatic cancer using genome-wide RNA-seq

Purpose/Objective(s): Discovery of genetic drivers of radioresistance is critical for developing novel therapeuticstrategies to combine with radiotherapy of radioresistant PDAC. In this study, we used genome-wide RNA-seq toidentify genes upregulated in generated radioresistant PDAC cell lines and discovered the Inhibitor of DNA Binding1 (ID1) gene as a potential regulator of radioresistance in ***/Methods: Radioresistant clones of the PDAC cell lines MIA PaCa-2 and PANC-1 were generated bydelivering daily ionizing irradiation (IR) (2 Gy/day) in vitro over two weeks (total 20 Gy) followed by standardclonogenic assays following one week from the end of IR. The generated RR and parental cell lines were submittedfor RNA-seq analysis to identify differentially expressed genes. The limma R package was used to calculatedifferential expression among genes. log2 fold change values were calculated for each sample compared to thecontrol. Genes with an absolute fold change > 1 were considered significant. RNA sequencing expression data fromthe Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) database was analyzed through the online databases GEPIA, cBioPortal, and theHuman Protein ***: Following exposure to two weeks of 2 Gy daily IR in vitro, the two PDAC cell lines showed significantlygreater clonogenic cell survival than their parental cell lines, indicating enhanced RR in these cells. RNA-seqanalysis comparing parental and RR cell lines found upregulated seven genes (TNS4, ZDHHC8P1, APlNR, AQP3,SPP1, ID1, ID2) and seven genes downregulated (PTX3, ITGB2, EPS8l1, AlDH1l2, KCNT2, ARHGAP9, IFI16) in bothRR cell lines. Western blotting confirmed increased expression of the ID1 protein in the RR cell lines compared totheir parental cell lines. We found that ID1 mRNA was significantly higher in PDAC tumors compared to matchednormal and high ID1 expression correlated with significantly worse disease-free survival (DFS) in PDAC patients(HR = 2.2, log rank P = 0.009). leaf senescence is accelerated by prolonged exposure to high temperatures in cool-season plants and is characterized by loss of chlorophyll and adjustment in amino acid *** objectives of this study included ascertaining how glutamate may affect the tolerance of cool-season grass species to heat stress in relation to leaf senescence through the regulation of leaf chlorophyll(Chl)and amino acid *** bentgrass(Agrostis stolonifera l.)plants were maintained for 35d under optimal growth temperature(22/18℃,day/night,non-stress control)or heat stress(35/30℃,day/night)in growth chambers,and glutamate(60 mM)or water(untreated control)was applied weekly as a foliar *** heat stress,turf quality(TQ),photochemical efficiency(Fv/Fm),and Chl content were significantly higher in plants treated with glutamate at 14-35 d,7-28 d,and 7-35 d,respectively,compared to untreated *** application significantly reduced the activities of chlorophyll-degrading peroxidase and chlorophyllase,two Chl-degrading enzymes,at 14,21,and 35 d of heat stress,whereas activity of the rate-limiting Chl synthesis enzyme,porphobilinogen deaminase,was not significantly *** treatment significantly increased the endogenous content of serine,threonine,lysine,aspartate,glutamate,and GABA under heat stress,while methionine,asparagine,isoleucine,and histidine were significantly up-regulated exclusively under heat *** findings suggest that glutamate could serve as a repressor for heat-accelerated leaf senescence by suppressing Chl degradation and activating amino acid metabolism involved in energy production,antioxidant defense,and nitrogen balance.

Mycotic aneurysms are a rare finding in the post-antibiotic era but must still be considered as a cause of abdominal pain in a patient with endocarditis. We present a case of a 47-year-old man with a history of IV drug use and a prior episode of endocarditis who developed a mycotic aneurysm while hospitalized on IV antibiotic therapy for aortic valve endocarditis. Due to their life-threatening character and often lack of evident clinical picture, mycotic aneurysms should still remain in high suspicion for a patient with abdominal pain in the setting of endocarditis.

Contactless probing of the intrinsic carrier transport single-walled carbon nanotubes

Intrinsic carrier transport properties of single-walled carbon nanotubes have been probed by two parallel methods on the same individual tubes： The contactless dielectric force microscopy （DFM） technique and the conventional field-effect transistor （FET） method. The dielectric responses of SWNTs are strongly correlated with electronic transport of the corresponding FETs. The DC bias voltage in DFM plays a role analogous to the gate voltage in FET. A microscopic model based on the general continuity equation and numerical simulation is built to reveal the link between intrinsic properties such as carrier concentration and mobility and the macroscopic observable, i.e. dielectric responses, in DFM experiments. local transport barriers in nanotubes, which influence the device transport behaviors, are also detected with nanometer scale resolution.

Circadian Clock-Regulated Phosphate Transporter PHT4;1 Plays an Important Role in Arabidopsis Defense

The Arabidopsis accelerated cell death 6-1 （acd6-1） mutant shows constitutive defense, cell death, and ex- treme dwarf phenotypes. In a screen for acd6-1 suppressors, we identified a mutant that was disrupted by a T-DNA in the PHOSPHATE TRANSPORTER 4;1 （PHT4;1） gene. The suppressor mutant pht4;1-1 is dominant, expresses truncated PHT4;1 transcripts, and is more susceptible to virulent Pseudomonas syringae strains but not to several avirulent strains. Treat- ment with a salicylic acid （SA） agonist induced a similar level of resistance in Col-0 and pht4;1-1, suggesting that PHT4;1 acts upstream of the SA pathway. Genetic analysis further indicates that PHT4,1 contributes to SID2-dependent and -in- dependent pathways. Transgenic expression of the DNA fragment containing the PHT4;1-1 region or the full-length PHT4;1 gene in wild-type conferred enhanced susceptibility to Pseudomonas infection. Interestingly, expression of PHT4;1 is reg- ulated by the circadian clock. Together, these data suggest that the phosphate transporter PHT4;1 is critical for basal defense and also implicate a potential role of the circadian clock in regulating innate immunity of Arabidopsis.

Anterior ankle arthrodesis

Ankle arthrodesis is a common procedure that resolves many conditions of the foot and ankle; however, complications following this procedure are often reported and vary depending on the fixation technique. Various techniques have been described in the attempt to achieve ankle arthrodesis and there is much debate as to the efficiency of each one. This study aims to evaluate the efficiency of anterior plating in ankle arthrodesis using customised and Synthes Tomo Fix plates. We present the outcomes of 28 ankle arthrodeses between 2005 and 2012, specifically examining rate of union, patient-reported outcomes scores, and complications. All 28 patients achieved radiographic union at an average of 36 wk; the majority of patients(92.86%) at or before 16 wk, the exceptions being two patients with Charcot joints who were noted to have bony union at a three year review. Patient-reported outcomes scores significantly increased(P lications included two delayed unions as previously mentioned, infection, and extended postoperative pain. With multiple points for fixation and coaxial screw entry points, the contoured customised plate offers added compression and provides a rigid fixation for arthrodesis stabilization.

Evaluating a combined bowel preparation for small-bowel capsule endoscopy:a prospective randomized–controlled study

Background:Capsule endoscopy(CE)is frequently hindered by intra-luminal *** aim was to determine whether a combination bowel preparation would improve small-bowel visualization,diagnostic yield,and the completion rate of ***:Single-blind,prospective randomized–controlled study of outpatients scheduled for ***-preparation subjects ingested 2 l of polyethylene glycol solution the night prior to CE,5ml simethicone and 5mg metoclopramide 20 minutes prior to CE and laid in the right lateral position 30 minutes after swallowing *** had no solid food after 7 *** night prior to CE and no liquids 4 hours prior to *** completed a satisfaction *** readers completed a small-bowel-visualization ***:Fifty patients were prospectively enrolled(56%female)with a median age of 54.4 years and 44 completed the study(23 patients in the control group and 21 in the preparation group).There was no significant difference between groups on quartile-based small-bowel visualization(all P>0.05).There was no significant difference between groups in diagnostic yield(P=0.69),mean gastric(P=0.10)or small-bowel transit time(P=0.89).The small-bowel completion rate was significantly higher in the preparation group(100%vs 78%;P=0.02).Bowel-preparation subjects reported significantly more discomfort than controls(62%vs 17%;P=0.01).Conclusions:Combined bowel preparation did not improve small-bowel visualization but did significantly increase patient *** CE completion rate improved in the preparation group but the diagnostic yield was *** on our findings,a bowel preparation prior to CE does not appear to improve CE performance and results in decreased patient satisfaction(***,***01243736).
