Immunomodulatory activity of polycaprolactone nanoparticles with calcium phosphate salts against Leishmania infantum infection

Objective:To prepare and characterize polycaprolactone(PCL)nanoparticles loaded with sonicator fragmented(SLA)and freeze-thaw Leishmania antigens(FTLA)and to investigate the in vitro immunogenicity of antigen-encapsulated nanoparticles with calcium phosphate ***:The water/oil/water binary emulsion solvent evaporation method was used to synthesize antigen-loaded PCL *** were characterized by scanning electron microscopy and zeta potential *** cytotoxicity in J774 macrophages in vitro was determined by MTT *** addition,the amount of nitric oxide and the level of cytokines produced by macrophages were determined by Griess reaction and ELISA method,*** protective effect of the developed formulations was evaluated by determining the infection index percentage in macrophages infected with Leishmania ***:Compared to the control group,SLA PCL and FTLA PCL nanoparticles with calcium phosphate adjuvant induced a 6-and 7-fold increase in nitric oxide,***,the vaccine formulations promoted the production of IFN-γand *** PCL and FTLA PCL nanoparticles combined with calcium phosphate adjuvant caused an approximately 13-and 11-fold reduction in infection index,respectively,compared to the control ***:The encapsulation of antigens obtained by both sonication and freeze-thawing into PCL nanoparticles and the formulations with calcium phosphate adjuvant show strong in vitro immune stimulating ***,PCL-based antigen delivery systems and calcium phosphate adjuvant are recommended as a potential vaccine candidate against leishmaniasis.

Prevalence and Factors Associated with Dry Eyes Syndrome in Glaucomatous Patients on Anti-Glaucoma Eye Drops Followed up at the Garoua Regional Hospital-Northern Cameroon

Background: Dry eye and glaucoma are two common pathologies in the elderly, and are very often associated. This association suggests a link between them and between their treatments. Our purpose for this study is to determine the prevalence of dry eye in our glaucoma patients treated with eye drops and deduce the factors associated with it. Patients and Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional, analytical study from October 2022 to September 2023 in the ophthalmology department of Garoua Regional Hospital in glaucoma patients aged over 15 years able to answer the Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI) questionnaires and treated with antiglaucoma eye drops for more than 3 months. These patients underwent a complete ophthalmological examination and a tear film break-up time test. Results: A total of 73 patients (146 eyes) were examined. The average age of the patients was 47.2 ± 16.5 years, with a male predominance of 54.8%. The prevalence of dry eye syndrome in our patients according to the OSDI score was 56.2% (95% CI) (44.8;67.6). The prevalence of dry eye syndrome on clinical examination of the BUT in the right eye was 83.7% (95% CI) (75.1;92.1) and 79.4% (70.2;88.7) in the left eye. The duration of antiglaucoma treatment was the factor associated with dry eye syndrome (p ients in our setting. Conclusion: Dry Eye Syndrome is common in glaucoma patients on drops in our setting. Treatment duration of more than 1 year seems to be associated with dry eyes.

Surgical Site Infections in Trauma and Orthopaedics at Bouaké Teaching Hospital (Côte d’Ivoire)

Background: Surgical site infections are serious healthcare problems. The aim was to describe the epidemiological, diagnostic, therapeutic, and prognostic aspects of surgical site infections in Trauma and Orthopaedics at Bouaké Teaching Hospital. Method: This retrospective, descriptive, and analytical study was conducted from January 2019 to December 31, 2021. The data studied included prevalence, initial lesions, type of surgical intervention, type of SSI, bacteria involved, treatment, and outcomes. Results: Forty-four (11%) of the 399 patients included in the study developed a surgical site infection. The mean age was 27 years, with 36 male and 8 female. Initial lesions were predominantly open fractures (n = 31;70%), with a mean delay of 48 hours for surgical management. Emergency interventions accounted for 70% (n = 31) of cases. The NNISS infection risk score was 1 in 80% (n = 35) of cases. Superficial infections (n = 34;77%) appeared early, on a mean 6 days postoperatively. Bacteriological analysis primarily identified Pseudomonas aeruginosa (n = 10;23%), sensitive to Imipenem and Chloramphenicol but resistant to Amoxicillin-clavulanic acid, Ceftriaxone, Gentamicin, and Ciprofloxacin. Multidrug-resistant bacteria were found in 89% (n = 8) of cases, with all bacteria resistant to Ceftriaxone. Surgical revision was performed in 10 patients (23%), primarily involving debridement with hardware retention (n = 7;70%). Chloramphenicol was the most commonly used antibiotic post-antibiogram (61%). Outcomes were favourable in 98% of cases. Identified risk factors included the type of lesion according to NRC classification, the delay in managing open fractures, and the NNISS score. Conclusion: The prevalence of surgical site infection was 11%, favoured by the delayed operation of open fractures.

Subcutaneous vein network plays important roles to maintain microcirculation that is related to some diagnostic *** developments of optical imaging technologies,still the difficulties about deep skin vascular imaging have been *** the other hand,since hemoglobin con-centration of human blood has key role in the veins imaging by optical manner,the used wavelength in vascular imaging,must be chosen considering absorption of *** this research,we constructed a near infrared(NIR)light source because of lower absorption of hemoglobin in this optical *** obtain vascular image,reflectance geometry was ***,from recorded images,vascular network analysis,such as calculation of width of vascular of interest and complexity of selected region were *** comparing with other modalities,we observed that proposed imaging system has great advantages including nonionized radiation,moderate penetration depth of 0.5-3 mm and diameter of 1 mm,cost-effective and algorit hmic simplicity for analysis.

The movement dynamics of autotomized lizards and their tails reveal functional costs of caudal autotomy

Autotomy has evolved independently several times in different animal *** frequently involves immediate functional costs,so regeneration evolved in many instances to restore the functionality of that body *** autotomy is a widespread antipredator strategy in lizards,although it may affect energy storage,locomotion dynamics,or survival in future encounters with ***,we assessed the effect of tail loss on the locomotor performance of wall lizards(Podarcis muralis),as well as the recovery of locomotor functionality of lizards with regenerated tails,and the movement dynamics of shed tails that were either intact or having regenerated *** loss had no effect on locomotion over unhindered spaces,possibly due to compensation between a negative effect on the stride of front limbs,and a positive effect of losing mass and friction *** found a clear negative impact of tail loss on locomotion in spaces with interspersed obstacles,in which tailed lizards jumped larger distances when leaving the ***,lizards that used the tail to push off the ground were able to approach the obstacles from further,so that the tail seemed to be useful when used during *** fully restores lizard’s locomotor capacities,but tail antipredator value,as indicated by the intensity of post-autotomic movements,is only partially *** these results,we propose that,together with the recovery of post-autotomy antipredator capacities,the restoration of the organismal locomotor performance may have been an important,yet frequently neglected factor in the evolution of lizard’s regeneration ability.

Comparison of clinical outcomes of deep anterior lamellar keratoplasty and excimer laser assisted anterior lamellar keratoplasty in keratoconus

AIM: To compare and evaluate the clinical outcomes of deep anterior lamellar keratoplasty(DALK) and excimer laser assisted anterior lamellar keratoplasty(ELLK) in eyes with ***: In this study, 57 eyes of 56 patients operated between 2013 to 2017 were included. Thirty-one eyes underwent big-bubble DALK and twenty-six eyes underwent ELLK. Preoperative and at control visits complete ophthalmic examination was performed. RESULTS: The mean patient age at the time of DALK surgery was 27 y and mean follow-up period was 21±5.4 mo. The mean patient age at the time of ELLK surgery was 27 y and mean follow-up period was 40±18 mo. Mean best spectacle corrected visual acuity(BSCVA) at postoperative period was significantly higher for DALK group(0.66±0.11) versus ELLK group(0.4±0.2)(Pbrane microperforation was occurred in 7 patients in DALK group versus in 1 patient in ELLK group. In 4 eyes, interface irregularity was developed in ELLK group. None of the patients in follow-up had graft rejection in both ***: In ELLK group, complication rate is lower, the surgical technique is simpler, faster and safer and also ELLK requires less experience with respect to DALK. Further, DALK can be performed unless satisfactory visual acuity is achieved after ELLK.

The study evaluated the effectiveness of honey dressings in healing recent skin wounds with soft tissue loss on limbs. Conducted over a year with 60 patients, results showed a significant reduction in wound size and early healing, with complete recovery on average within 29 days. The study supports honey as a viable wound treatment.

Hippopotamus bites are rare in medical consultations, despite several studies exposing their aggressive character. A case of a hippopotamus bite on the shoulder of a fisherman has been reported. In addition to the osteoarticular aspect representing a therapeutic problem, the infectious aspect was marked by sepsis, with a death in less than 48 hours. Based on this observation, a protocol for the initial management of large animal bites was submitted.

Structural and Spectral (IR, NMR and UV/Visible) Properties of Newly Designed Boronic Acid Derivatives Containing DO3A Sensitive to Uranyl Ion: A DFT and TD-DFT Study

In this study, the structural, electronic and optical properties of DO3A-based boronic acid derivates with and without UO22+ ion are studied by density functional calculations with M062X/6 - 31 g + (d) method, in aqueous media. The quantum chemical properties such as EHOMO, ELUMO, the energy gap (ΔE), chemical potential (μ), hardness (η) are also performed. The theoretical essential UV-Vis. bands of DO3A-UO2(VI)-APB-o are at 392 and 687 nm. DO3A-UO2 (VI)-ABB-o structure has two main bands at 393 and 650 nm. In general, the bathochromic shift occurs and the HOMO-LUMO energy gap decreases to about 2 eV, by binding UO22+ ion in three different media. The notable shifts in NMR spectrums have been found on α-carbon of carbonyl group, ring carbons and amide protons. In IR-spectrums, the prominent peaks belong to BO-H and N-H of amide stretching vibrations of calculated structures.

Precontoured buttress plate vs reconstruction plate for acetabulum posterior wall fractures: A biomechanical study

BACKGROUND The purpose of open reduction and internal fixation of acetabulum posterior wall fractures is to restore anatomical structure and stability of the hip joint, in order to start weight bearing as soon as possible and prevent hip arthrosis; restoration of the anatomy should preserve function of the joint as well. Although "special shaped precontoured plates" have been developed in recent years for surgical treatment of this region, studies comparing the traditional plates with the newly designed precontoured plates are *** To evaluate the biomechanical properties of precontoured anatomic buttress and conventional curved reconstruction plates(CCRPs) for posterior wall acetabulum fracture *** Twelve pelvis models were created for testing plate treatment of fracture in the posterior wall of the acetabulum. These 12 pelvis models were used to create 24 hemipelvis models(experimental) by cutting from the sagittal plane and passing over the center of gravity, after which the posterior wall acetabular fractures(of similar type and size) were created. In these experimental models, the right acetabulum was fixed with a 5-hole CCRP, while the left was fixed with a precontoured anatomic buttress plate(PABP). Samples were placed through thetest device and were subjected to static load testing, with a constant testing velocity of 2 mm/min until the load reached 2.3 kN or the acetabular fixation failed. Dynamic tests were also performed with sinusoidal wave load, with a maximal load of 2.3 kN and a load ratio of *** The average stiffness values were 460.83 ± 95.47 N/mm for the PABP and 291.99± 118.58 N/mm for the 5-hole CCRP. The precontoured anatomic acetabulum buttress plates had significantly higher rigidity than the CCRPs(P = 0.022).
