Cortisol levels in skimmed milk during the first 22 weeks of lactation and response to short-term metabolic stress and lameness in dairy cows

Background： Cortisol is secreted into blood in reaction to acute stress, but also in phases of diminished feed intake and changed animal behavior. As cows do not always show clear signs of discomfort, reliable diagnostic markers could be used to provide information regarding individual cows＇ distress. The objective of this study was to establish an ether free immunoassay for the detection of cortisol and to determine values during the first 22 weeks of lactation. Furthermore, the response in milk cortisol levels was assessed during times of metabolic stress and pain associated symptoms of lameness. Methods： Milk yield and composition, blood serum glucose, NEFA and BHBA as well as milk cortisol were determined in 24 multiparous Holstein-Friesian cows over the course of the first 22 weeks of lactation. Animals were further checked for signs of clinical diseases on a daily basis. Two feed restrictions over three days （FR; 70 % of precious ad libitum intake） were performed during the 4th wk and the 21st wk, respectively. An ELISA for cortisol measurement in easily accessible bovine skimmed milk was established and applied. Results： On the last day of FR in early lactation, a reduction in milk yield and changes in serum metabolites compared to respective previous values were detected. The FR in mid-lactation resulted in no changes in milk production and serum metabolites. Milk cortisol was highest during first wk of lactation and remained on comparable levels thereafter. Milk yield and composition were not influenced by FR. Lameness resulted in enhanced milk cortisol levels. Conclusion： Milk cortisol could be used as an indicator of painful symptoms such as lameness. Higher values of milk cortisol levels during first wk of lactation should be taken into account for interpretation.

Objective:To scrutinize the definitions of minimal invasive surgical therapy(MIST)and to investigate urologists’knowledge,attitudes,and practices for benign prostatic obstruction ***:A 36-item survey was developed with a Delphi *** on definitions of MIST and attitudes and practices of benign prostatic obstruction surgeries were *** were invited globally to complete the online *** was achieved when more than or equal to 70%responses were“agree or strongly agree”and less than or equal to 15%responses were“disagree or strongly disagree”(consensus agree),or when more than or equal to 70%responses were“disagree or strongly disagree”and less than or equal to 15%responses were“agree or strongly agree”(consensus disagree).Results:The top three qualities for defining MIST were minimal blood loss(n=466,80.3%),fast post-operative recovery(n=431,74.3%),and short hospital stay(n=425,73.3%).The top three surgeries that were regarded as MIST were Urolift®(n=361,62.2%),Rezum®(n=351,60.5%),and endoscopic enucleation of the prostate(EEP)(n=332,57.2%).Consensus in the knowledge section was achieved for the superiority of Urolift®,Rezum®,and iTIND®over transurethral resection of the prostate with regard to blood loss,recovery,day surgery feasibility,and post-operative *** in the attitudes section was achieved for the superiority of Urolift®,Rezum®,and iTIND®over transurethral resection of the prostate with regard to blood loss,recovery,and day surgery *** on both sections was achieved for EEP as the option with the better symptoms and flow improvement,lower retreatment rate,and better suitable for prostate more than 80 ***:Minimal blood loss,fast post-operative recovery,and short hospital stay were the most important qualities for defining ***®,Rezum®,and EEP were regarded as MIST by most urologists.

To evaluate the promising advantages of massively parallel sequencing(MPS)in our casework,we analysed a total of 33 Y-chromosomal short tandem repeats(Y-STRs)with traditional capillary electrophoresis(CE)and 25 Y-STRs using the newer MPS *** studied the outcome of both technologies in 64 father-son pairs using stock and custom-designed *** MPS technology confirmed the 13 mutational events observed with CE and improved our understanding of the complex nature of STR *** detecting isometric sequence variants between unrelated males,we show that sequencing Y-STRs using MPS can boost discrimination power.

Significance of serum carcinoembryonic antigen in metastatic breast cancer patients:A prospective study

A possible means of countering the underdiagnosis of Klinefelter Syndrome

Klinefelter syndrome （KS） is a frequent male genetic disorder （incidence 1：1000 - 2：1000） provoked by a supernumerary X-chromosome and thus a 47,XXY karyotype. Although many efforts have been put into obtaining an experimental and clinical understanding of the syndrome, it remains frustratingly underdiagnosed with a remarkable portion of cases being unidentified, that is only 10% of prepubertal Klinefelter boys being diagnosed as such. This is particularly important as the disease can be associated with several adverse features such as hypergonadotropic hypogonadism and infertility but also metabolic and cognitive alterations, which are causative of significantly increased mortality and morbidity rates in those affected. Therefore, there is a need for novel methods enabling a fast and reliable routine diagnosis of patients. In the paper, ＇Novel Methylation Specific Real Time PCR Test for the Diagnosis of Klinefelter Syndrome＇ published on Asian Journal ofAndrology, Mehta et al.2 reported a molecular assay for KS diagnosis based on the detection of supernumerary X-chromosomes using primers for unmethylated and methylated copies of the X-ch inactive-specific transcript gene （XIST）. The XIST transcript is only expressed in somatic cells when more than one X-chromosome is present. In Klinefelter patients, it has been shown that the supernumerary X-chromosome is inactivated in a similar manner as in women thus it has been suggested that the XIST expression can be used as a means to diagnose KS patients） The recognition of differences in XIST methylation has the potential of providing a very elegant sensitive and fast means of screening and diagnosing KS, even in the setting of low grade 47,XXY/46,XY mosaicism.

Randomized, Double Blind and Placebo Controlled Study Using a Combination of Two Probiotic Lactobacilli to Alleviate Symptoms and Frequency of Common Cold

Purpose: The efficacy of ProbiDefendum, a combination of the two lactobacilli Lactobacillus plantarum HEAL9 and Lactobacillus paracasei 8700:2, on the severity, duration and frequency of cold episodes was studied in a randomized, double blind, placebo controlled clinical trial. Methods: A total of 310 subjects with increased risk for common cold infection (at least two episodes of common cold during the last six months) were enrolled and were randomly assigned to receive either active product (A-group) or placebo (P-group) over a period of 12 weeks. Subjects reported the occurrence and severity of cold episodes in a diary, scoring 13 different symptoms of common cold over a period of 7 days after the episode began. Results: In the total study population, cold episodes were reported in 148 cases (47.7%). In the A-group, 54 subjects acquired one and 18 subjects acquired 2 episodes whereas 83 subjects had none. In the P-group, 52 subjects reported one, 24 subjects reported 2 episodes and 79 subjects reported none. Although the number of episodes was similar in both groups, cold episodes in the active group were significantly shorter than in the placebo group. The total sum scores of cold symptoms were significantly lower in the active group as compared with the placebo group, as well as in the intention-to-treat (ITT) as in the per-protocol (PP) collectives (ITT: 75.2 ± 40.3 vs. 113.4 ± 66.3;p 0.001;PP: 73.1 ± 38.8 vs. 117.0 ± 66.1;p 0.001). The daily ingestion of the probiotics over a period of 12 weeks was well tolerated. Conclusion: The daily intake of the probiotic dietary supplement ProbiDefendum over a period of 12 weeks efficiently alleviated symptoms of common cold and the duration of cold episodes.

Metabolic syndrome(MetS)is a cluster of metabolic abnormalities related to central adiposity and insulin *** importance is increasingly recognized as it associates with increased risks of metabolic and cardiovascular *** metabolic aberrations of MetS may lead to development of benign prostatic hyperplasia(BPH)and lower urinary tract symptoms(LUTS)in men.A 26.5%-55.6% prevalence of MetS in men with LUTS was reported in worldwide *** the exact biological pathway is not clear yet,insulin resistance,increased visceral adiposity,sex hormone alterations and cellular inflammatory reactions played significant roles in the related pathophysiological *** should recognize the cardiovascular and metabolic impacts of MetS in men with LUTS,early risk factors optimization and use of appropriate medical therapy may possibly alter or slower the progression of LUTS/BPH,and potentially avoid unnecessary morbidities and mortalities from cardiovascular and metabolic diseases for those men.

印度尼西亚是世界上华人人数最多的国家也是中国重要的合作伙伴国之一。近年来,两国之间在经济、政治、科技、教育与文化等方建立了良好的合作关系。随着这些合作关系的发展,印度尼西亚人对汉语学习的兴趣也一直不断的提高,在印度尼西亚进行汉语教学的各种机构也是因而变得越来越多。与此同时,在印度尼西亚的中国文化传播也变得更加激烈,认识、了解中国文化的印尼人也每年都在增加。然而,印度尼西亚民族是由各种不同的种族、宗教信仰及生活背景组成的民族。这些差异对印度尼西亚人们在认识、了解及认同中国文化都会有不同的影响。为了解印度尼西亚人,尤其是印度尼西亚的第二大城市Surabaya(泗水市)的大学生对中国文化符号的认同情况,本文将结合国内学者相关研究成果及论文前期进行过的预调查结果,在中国的各种文化符号当中选取了语言、传统节日、传统乐器、中国产品、代表人物、代表动物、传统饮食、名胜古迹、传统艺术及中医十个文化符号种类,43种具有代表性的中国文化符号。然后,通过文献调查法、问卷调查法、定量分析法及比较分析法针对印度尼西亚泗水市的200名大学生进行调查与分析。研究结果显示,在43种文化符号当中,认知率最高的文化符号为汉语、熊猫、炒饭及长城,认知率最低的文化符号为重阳节。认同率最高的文化符号为熊猫,不认同率最高的文化符号为针灸与白酒。了解倾向率最高的文化符号为北京烤鸭,了解倾向率最低的文化符号为龙。除此之外,在所选取的文化符号当中没有一个认知率低到0%和不认同率超过30%的文化符号,说明印度尼西亚泗水市大学生对中国文化符号的认同程度是属于中等偏高程度。通过本论文的研究结果我们还能了解到个人不同的种族、宗教、以及汉语学习的情况能对他们认同中国文化符号造成不同的影响。华裔、儒教与佛教徒以及汉语学习者的被调查者对中国文化符号具有更高的认知与认同率。可是,是否来过中国对个人认同中国文化符号没有特别大的影响,来过和没来过中国的被调查者对中国文化符号的认知与认同率是差不多一样。
