Effect of Cultivar, Irrigation and Nitrogen Fertilization on Chickpea (<i>Cicer arietinum</i>L.) Productivity

A 2-year field study was conducted in northern Greece to investigate the effect of nitrogen fertilization and irrigation on productivity of three Greek chickpea varieties (“Amorgos” “Serifos”, “Andros”). Chickpea, grown under irrigation regime (30 + 30 mm of water) and fertilized with 50 kg·N·ha-1 before planting and with 40 kg·N·ha-1 at blossom growth stage, produced more total dry biomass and seed yield as compared with that grown under non-irrigated conditions and fertilized with 50 kg·N·ha-1 before planting only. In particular, irrigation and nitrogen fertilization at blossom growth stage increased total dry weight of chickpea by 18.3% and 18.5%, respectively, as compared with that of non-irrigated and fertilized with N before planting. The corresponding increase of seed yield was 30.5% and 20%, respectively. The total dry biomass of “Amorgos” was 10% and 13% greater than that of “Serifos” and “Andros”, while its respective seed yield increase was 5% and 16%. Finally, the quantum yield of photosystem II of chickpea was not affected by irrigation or fertilization. These results indicated that nitrogen fertilization at blossom growth stage combined with irrigation increased seed yield of all chickpea varieties, whereas the same treatments did not have any effect on plant quantum yield of photosystem II.

When far from equilibrium,many-body systems display behavior that strongly depends on the initial conditions.A characteristic such example is the phenomenon of plasticity of crystalline and amorphous materials that strongly depends on the material *** plasticity modeling,the history is captured by a quenched,local and disordered flow stress *** it is this disorder that causes avalanches that are commonly observed during nanoscale plastic deformation,the functional form and scaling properties have remained *** this paper,a generic formalism is developed for deriving local disorder distributions from fieldresponse(e.g.,stress/strain)timeseries in models of crackling *** demonstrate the efficiency of the method in the hysteretic random-field Ising model and also,models of elastic interface depinning that have been used to model crystalline and amorphous *** show that the capacity to resolve the quenched disorder distribution improves with the temporal resolution and number of samples.

Modeling and optimization of non-isothermal convective drying process of Lavandula×allardii

Non-isothermal convective drying schemes were examined for Lavandula×allardii leaves and *** process parameters were optimized using response surface methodology(RSM)to ensure the peak operational *** effects of temperature increase rate(2–4°C/h)and the airflow velocity(1–3 m/s)on the essential oil yield,drying duration and consumption,were investigated.A face-centered central composite design was deployed and the experimental data was adapted to the most suitable polynomial models,as determined by the regression *** of variance was applied to assess the effects of the process variables,their interactions and the statistical significance of the examined *** factors of temperature increase rate and airflow velocity had a significant impact on the drying *** velocity had a greater effect on leaves’essential oil yield and inflorescences’process energy consumption,whereas the rates of temperature increase had a greater influence on the inflorescences’essential oil yield and leaves’energy *** minimum drying duration and energy consumption were obtained for the maximum temperature increasing rate at 3 and 1 m/s airflow velocities respectively;and the highest essential oil yield was obtained for the least rate of temperature increase and airflow velocity for both leaves and *** optimization was performed for minimizing drying duration and energy consumption by maximizing the essential oil *** rate of temperature increases of 4°C/h and the airflow velocity of 1 m/s,were proposed as the optimum non-isothermal drying conditions for both leaves and inflorescences of Lavandula×*** values of essential oil content have been 1.387/3.05 mL/g,4.21/4.18 h drying time and 0.809/0.732 kWh energy consumption at the optimum operation point for leaves and inflorescences,*** resulted optimized non-stationary temperature scheme considerably improved the drying

Wolbachia symbiosis and insect immune response

Bacterial intraceUular symbiosis is very common in insects, having significant consequences in promoting the evolution of life and biodiversity. The bacterial group that has recently attracted particular attention is Wolbachia pipientis which probably represents the most ubiquitous endosymbiont on the planet. W. pipientis is a Gram-negative obligatory intracellular and maternally transmitted a-proteobacterium, that is able to establish symbiotic associations with arthropods and nematodes. In arthropods, Wolbachia pipientis infections have been described in Arachnida, in Isopoda and mainly in Insecta. They have been reported in almost all major insect orders including Diptera, Coleoptera, Hemiptera, Hymenoptera, Orthoptera and Lepidoptera. To enhance its transmission, W. pipientis can manipulate host reproduction by inducing parthenogenesis, feminization, male killing and cytoplasmic incompatibility. Several polymerase chain reaction surveys have indicated that up to 70% of all insect species may be infected with W. pipientis. How does W. pipientis manage to get established in diverse insect host species？ How is this intracellular bacterial symbiont species so successful in escaping the host immune response？ The present review presents recent advances and ongoing scientific efforts in the field. The current body of knowledge in the field is summarized, revelations from the available genomic information are presented and as yet unanswered questions are discussed in an attempt to present a comprehensive picture of the unique ability of W. pipientis to establish symbiosis and to manipulate reproduction while evading the host＇s immune system.

Identifying factors that influence the attitudes of agricultural experts regarding precision agriculture plays an important role in developing,promoting and establishing precision *** aim of this study was to identify factors affecting the attitudes of agricultural experts regarding the implementation of precision agriculture.A descriptive research design was employed as the research method.A research-made questionnaire was used to examine the agricultural experts’attitude toward precision *** consistency was demonstrated with a coefficient alpha of 0.87,and the content and face validity of the instrument was confirmed by a panel of *** results show that technical,economic and accessibility factors accounted for 55%of the changes in attitudes towards precision *** findings revealed that there were no significant differences between participants in terms of gender,field of study,extension education,age,experience,organizational position and attitudes,while education levels had a significant effect on the respondent’s attitudes.

Spatiotemporal variations of ozone exposure and its risks to vegetation and human health in Cyprus:an analysis across a gradient of altitudes

Ground-level ozone(O_(3)) aff ects vegetation and threatens environmental health when levels exceed critical values,above which adverse eff ects are *** is expected to be a hotspot for O_(3)concentrations due to its unique position in the eastern Mediterranean,receiving air masses from Europe,African,and Asian continents,and experiencing a warm Mediterranean *** Cyprus,the spatiotemporal features of O_(3) are poorly understood and the potential risks for forest health have not been *** evaluated O_(3) and nitrogen oxides(NO and NO 2)at four regional background stations at different altitudes over 2014−2016.O_(3) risks to vegetation and human health were estimated by calculating accumulated O_(3)exposure over a threshold of 40 nmol mol^(−1)(AOT40)and cumulative exposure to mixing ratios above 35 nmol mol^(−1)(SOMO35)*** data reveal that mean O_(3)concentrations follow a seasonal pattern,with higher levels in spring(51.8 nmol mol^(−1))and summer(53.2 nmol mol^(−1))and lower levels in autumn(46.9 nmol mol^(−1))and winter(43.3 nmol mol^(−1)).The highest mean O_(3)exposure(59.5 nmol mol^(−1)) in summer occurred at the high elevation station ***(1819 m a.s.l.).Increasing(decreasing)altitudinal gradients were found for O_(3)(NO x),driven by summer–winter diff *** diurnal patterns of O_(3) showed little *** at the lowest altitude O_(3) displayed a typical O_(3) diurnal pattern,with hourly diff erences smaller than 15 nmol mol^(−1).Accumulated O_(3) exposures at all stations and in all years exceeded the European Union’s limits for the protection of vegetation,with average values of 3-month(limit:3000 nmol mol^(−1)h)and 6-month(limit:5000 nmol mol^(−1)h)AOT40 for crops and forests of 16,564 and 31,836 nmol mol^(−1)h,respectively.O_(3) exposures were considerably high for human health,with an average SOMO35 value of 7270 nmol mol^(−1) days across stations and *** results indicate that O_(3) is a major environm
