Assessing n-type organic materials for lithium batteries:A techno-economic review

The high demand for critical minerals such as lithium,copper,nickel,and cobalt,required for lithium-ion batteries,has raised questions regarding the feasibility of maintaining a steady and affordable supply of raw materials for their *** the last years,researchers have shifted their attention toward organic materials,which are potentially more widely available,affordable,and sustainable due to the ubiquitous presence of the constituent organic *** n-type materials have a redox mechanism analogous to that of lithium-ion cathodes and anodes,hence they are suitable for a meaningful comparison with the state-of-the-art *** many reviews have evaluated the properties of organic materials at the material or electrode level,herein,the properties of n-type organic materials are assessed in a complex system,such as a full battery,to evaluate the feasibility and performance of these materials in commercial-scale battery *** most relevant cathode materials for organic batteries are reviewed,and a detailed cost and performance analysis of n-type material-based battery packs using the BatPaC 5.0 software is *** analysis considers the influence of electrode design choices,such as the conductive carbon content,active material mass loading,and electrode density,on energy density and *** potential of n-type organic materials as a low-cost and sustainable solution for energy storage applications is highlighted,while emphasizing the need for further advancements of organic materials for energy storage applications.

Usually,the response after a disastrous event requires decision-makers in emergency operative rooms to quickly outline and understand the current post-event situation,for planning and defining strategies for a contextualized ***,in many cases,disastrous events affect cross-border territories and/or involve multiple orga-nizations in responding to the demand generated by the *** cases require a harmonized and coordinated response by all the institutions/subjects involved in emergency *** address this challenge,this pa-per proposes the e-Atlas(emergency atlas)tool for showing and sharing information that embraces a response management perspective to explicitly support decision-makers in managing the criticalities of a post-earthquake *** e-Atlas has been designed and tested to:i)acquire sensible information for allowing decision-makers to understand in almost real-time the post-earthquake situational picture,and ii)share the representation of the situational picture among different users,allowing each of them to use it according to its specific *** of the tool are illustrated,to show how it is used in a transborder context in the North-East area of Italy.

Design of deformable mirrors for high power lasers

We present the workflow of the design, realization and testing of deformable mirrors suitable for high power diode pumped solid-state lasers. It starts with the study of the aberration to be corrected, and then it continues with the design of the actuators position and characteristic. In this paper, we present and compare three deformable mirrors realized for multi-J level laser facilities. We show that with the same design concept it is possible to realize deformable mirrors for other types of lasers. As an example, we report the realization of a deformable mirror for femtosecond lasers and for a CW CO_2 laser.

Unsupervised Electric Motor Fault Detection by Using Deep Autoencoders

Fault diagnosis of electric motors is a fundamental task for production line testing, and it is usually performed by experienced human operators. In the recent years, several methods have been proposed in the literature for detecting faults automatically. Deep neural networks have been successfully employed for this task, but, up to the authors' knowledge, they have never been used in an unsupervised scenario. This paper proposes an unsupervised method for diagnosing faults of electric motors by using a novelty detection approach based on deep autoencoders. In the proposed method, vibration signals are acquired by using accelerometers and processed to extract LogMel coefficients as features. Autoencoders are trained by using normal data only, i.e., data that do not contain faults. Three different autoencoders architectures have been evaluated: the multilayer perceptron(MLP) autoencoder, the convolutional neural network autoencoder, and the recurrent autoencoder composed of long short-term memory(LSTM) units. The experiments have been conducted by using a dataset created by the authors, and the proposed approaches have been compared to the one-class support vector machine(OC-SVM) algorithm. The performance has been evaluated in terms area under curve(AUC) of the receiver operating characteristic curve, and the results showed that all the autoencoder-based approaches outperform the OCSVM algorithm. Moreover, the MLP autoencoder is the most performing architecture, achieving an AUC equal to 99.11 %.

Optimal flow conditions of a tracheobronchial model to reengineer lung structures

The high demand for lung transplants cannot be matched by an adequate number of lungs from donors. Since fully ex-novo lungs are far from being feasible, tissue engineering is actively considering implantation of engineered lungs where the devitalized structure of a donor is used as scaffold to be repopulated by stem cells of the receiving patient. A decellularized donated lung is treated inside a bioreactor where transport through the tracheobronchial tree (TBT) will allow for both deposition of stem cells and nourishment for their subsequent growth, thus developing new lung tissue. The key concern is to set optimally the boundary conditions to utilize in the bioreactor. We propose a predictive model of slow liquid ventilation, which combines a one-dimensional (1-D) mathematical model of the TBT and a solute deposition model strongly dependent on fluid velocity across the tree. With it, we were able to track and drive the concentration of a generic solute across the airways, looking for its optimal distribution. This was given by properly adjusting the pumps’ regime serving the bioreactor. A feedback system, created by coupling the two models, allowed us to derive the optimal pattern. The TBT model can be easily invertible, thus yielding a straightforward flow/pressure law at the inlet to optimize the efficiency of the bioreactor.

Plants often encounter light intensities exceeding the capacity of photosynthesis(excessive light)mainly due to biotic and abiotic factors,which lower C02 fixation and reduce light energy *** excessive light,the photosynthetic electron transport chain generates damaging molecules,hence leading to photooxidative stress and eventually to cell *** this review,we summarize the mechanisms linking the excessive absorption of light energy in chloroplasts to programmed cell death in plant *** highlight the importance of reactive carbonyl species generated by lipid photooxidation,their detoxification,and the integrating role of the endoplasmic reticulum in the adoption of phototolerance or cell-death ***,we invite the scientific community to standardize the conditions of excessive light treatments.

Entanglement concentration with strong projective measurement in an optomechanical system

In this work, we study an entanglement concentration scheme in a 3-mode optomechanical system. The scheme is based on phonon counting measurements, which can be performed through photon counting of an auxiliary cavity connected to the mechanical resonator. The amount of entanglement between the two cavity output modes is found to increase logarithmically with the number of detected phonons(photons). Such an entanglement concentration scheme is deterministic since, independently of the number of detected phonons(photons), the measurement always leads to an increase in output entanglement. Besides numerical simulations,we provide analytical results and physical insight for the improved entanglement and the concentration efficiency.

Purely one-dimensional ferroelectricity and antiferroelectricity from van der Waals niobium oxide trihalides

Intrinsic one-dimensional(1D)ferroelectric materials are rarely reported but are highly sought to break the size limit of nanostructured conventional ***,we report a class of inborn 1D ferroelectric nanowires,namely 1D NbOX_(3)(X=Cl,Br,and I),that can be directly obtained from experimentally realized van der Waals *** addition to the sizable spontaneous polarization,1D NbOX_(3) exhibits low ferroelectric switching barriers,small coercive electric fields,and high critical temperature,governed by the hybridization of the Nb empty d orbitals and the O p orbitals(d^(0) rule).Moreover,the double-channel structure of 1D NbOX_(3) also enables the emergence of 1D antiferroelectric metastable *** findings not only propose a class of 1D ferroelectric materials toward the development of miniaturized and high-density electronic devices,but also pave an avenue of obtaining intrinsic 1D ferroelectrics from van der Waals crystals.

Spectral and fragility evaluations of retrofitted structures through strength reduction and enhanced damping

A retrofit procedure for existing buildings called the ＂weakening and damping technique＂（WED） is presented in this paper. Weakening of structures can limit the maximum response accelerations during severe ground motions, but leads to an increase in the displacements or inter-story drifts. Added damping by using viscous dampers, on the other hand, reduces the inter-story drifts and has no significant effect on total accelerations, when structures behave inelastically. The weakening and damping technique addresses the two main causes for both structural and nonstructural damage in structures. The weakening retrofit is particularly suitable for structures that have overstressed components and weak brittle components. In this paper, the advantages of the WeD are verified by nonlinear dynamic analysis and simplified spectral approach that has been modified to fit structures with additional damping devices. A hospital structure located in the San Fernando Valley in California is selected as a case study. The results from both analyses show that the retrofit solution is feasible to reduce both structural acceleration and displacement. A sensitivity analysis is also carried out to evaluate the effectiveness of the retrofitting method using different combinations of performance thresholds in accelerations and displacements through fragility analysis.
