A proctolin-like peptide is regulated after baculovirus infection and mediates in caterpillar locomotion and digestion

Baculoviruses constitute a large group of invertebrate DNA viruses, predominantly infecting larvae of the insect order Lepidoptera. During a baculovirus infection, the virus spreads throughout the insect body producing a systemic infection in multiple larval tissues, included the central nervous system (CNS). As a main component of the CNS, neuropeptides are small protein-like molecules functioning as neurohormones, neurotransmitters, or neuromodulators. These peptides are involved in regulating animal physiology and behavior and could be altered after baculovirus infection. In this study, we have investigated the effect of Spodoptera exigua multiple nucleopolyhedrovirus (SeMNPV) infection on expression of Spodoptera exigua neuropeptides and neuropeptide-like genes. Expression of the gene encoding a polypeptide that resembles the well-known insect neuropeptide proctolin and named as proctolin-like peptide (PLP), was downregulated in the larval brain following infection and was chosen for further analysis. A recombinant Autographa californica multiple nucleopolyhedrovirus (AcMNPV) overexpressing the C-terminal part of the PLP was generated and used in bioassays using S. exigua larvae to study its influence on the viral infection and insect behavior. AcMNPV-PLP-infected larvae showed less locomotion activity and a reduction in growth compared to larvae infected with wild type AcMNPV or mock-infected larvae. These results are indicative of this new peptide as a neuromodulator that regulates visceral and skeletal muscle contractions and offers a novel effector involved in the behavioral changes during baculovirus infection.

Do different kinds of photon-pair sources have the same indistinguishability in quantum silicon photonics?

In the same silicon photonic integrated circuit,we compare two types of integrated degenerate photon-pair sources(microring resonators and waveguides)using Hong–Ou–Mandel(HOM)interference *** nominally identical microring resonators are coupled to two nominally identical waveguides,which form the arms of a Mach–Zehnder *** is pumped by two lasers at two different wavelengths to generate,by spontaneous four-wave mixing,degenerate photon *** particular,the microring resonators can be thermally tuned in or out of resonance with the pump wavelengths,thus choosing either the microring resonators or the waveguides as photon-pair sources,*** this way,an on-chip HOM visibility of 94%with microring resonators and 99%with straight waveguides is measured upon *** compare our experimental results with theoretical simulations of the joint spectral intensity and the purity of the degenerate photon *** verify that the visibility is connected to the sources’indistinguishability,which can be quantified by the overlap between the joint spectral amplitudes(JSA)of the photon pairs generated by the two *** estimate a JSA overlap of 98%with waveguides and 89%with microring resonators.

A flexible multi-body model of a surface miner for analyzing the interaction between rock-cutting forces and chassis vibrations

The discontinuous nature of rock cutting can easily cause unwanted vibrations in the structure of a surface *** these vibrations are not properly addressed,the related stress cycles can gradually damage the chassis resulting in fatigue *** events can seriously undermine the safety of operators and digging operations may be stopped for days,with an obvious economic *** work presents an analysis of the dynamics of a surface miner,focusing on the interaction between cutting machine dynamics and cutting forces,which is a new approach for this type of *** this purpose,the authors developed a numerical model of the cutting process made up of(1)a multi-body model of the cutting machine,which takes into account the chassis's flexibility;(2)a model of the rotating cutting head;and(3)a model of the interaction between the cutting head and rock,based on Shao's *** model was compared with experimental results and then used to investigate the effects of cutting speed and cutting depth on the machine dynamics.

In this paper,after the successful applications to open water propeller performance estimations,the influence of transition sensitive and modified mass transfer models tuned to account for the laminar flow in the prediction of the cavitation inception of marine propulsors is investigated from the point of view of the unsteady functioning and induced pressure *** VP1304(also known as PPTC)test case,for which dedicated data were collected during several workshops,is considered *** preliminary analyses using RANS,also Detached Eddy Simulations(DES)are included to better account for the vortex dynamics and its influence on pressure *** to what observed in uniform inflow,results show a better agreement with the available measurements of propeller performances and confirm the reliability of the proposed approaches for unsteady,non-cavitating,model scale propeller *** overall cavitation pattern is improved too by the application of the transition sensitive correction to the mass transfer model,but the complex dynamics of bubble cavitation observed in experiments prevents quantitatively better predictions in terms of thrust/torque breakdown and induced pressure pulses levels regardless the use of RANS or DES methods.

Optics with high-precision height and slope are increasingly desired in numerous industrial *** instance,Kirkpatrick-Baez(KB)mirrors play an important role in synchrotron X-ray applications.A KB system is composed of two aspherical,grazing-incidence mirrors used to focus an X-ray *** fabrication of KB mirrors is challenging due to the aspherical departure of the mirror surfaces from base geometries and the high-quality requirements for slope and height *** this paper,we present the process of manufacturing an elliptical cylinder KB mirror using our in-house-developed ion beam figuring(IBF)and metrology ***,the key aspects of figuring and finishing processes with IBF are illustrated in *** effect of positioning error on the convergence of the residual slope error is highlighted and ***,inspection and cross-validation using different metrology instruments are performed and used as the final validation of the *** confirm that relative to the requested off-axis ellipse,the mirror has achieved 0.15-μrad root mean square(RMS)and 0.36-nm RMS residual slope and height errors,respectively,while maintaining the initial 0.3-nm RMS microroughness.

Fetal growth restriction(FGR),or intrauterine growth restriction(IUGR),is a complication of pregnancy where the fetus does not achieve its genetic growth *** is characterized by a pathological retardation of intrauterine growth velocity in the curve of intrauterine ***,the FGR definition is still debated,and there is a lack of a uniform definition in the *** IUGR,compared to constitutional smallness,is a pathological condition in which the placenta fails to deliver an adequate supply of oxygen and nutrients to the developing *** with IUGR,compared to appropriately grown gestational age infants,have a significantly higher risk of mortality and neonatal complications with long-term *** studies have demonstrated how suboptimal fetal growth leads to long-lasting physiological alterations for the developing fetus as well as for the newborn and adult in the *** long-term effects of fetal growth retardation may be adaptations to poor oxygen and nutrient supply that are effective in the fetal period but deleterious in the long term through structural or functional *** studies showed that FGR could be a contributing factor for adult chronic diseases including cardiovascular disease,metabolic syndrome,diabetes,respiratory diseases and impaired lung function,and chronic kidney *** this review we discussed pathophysiologic mechanisms of FGR-related complications and potential preventive measures for FGR.

Adherence to dietary prescriptions in patients with acute food protein-induced enterocolitis syndrome

Food protein-induced enterocolitis syndrome(FPIES)is a non-Immunoglobulin(non-IgE)-mediated food *** elimination diet is the only therapy,the culprit food will be reintroduced if tolerance is ***,it is possible that patients do not follow the recommendations given by the healthcare *** investigated if our advice to avoid the trigger food in patients with active FPIES and to reintroduce it in the diet in patients who achieved tolerance had been *** interviewed by telephone the parents of children who were diagnosed with acute *** 23.2%of our patients disregarded our dietary recommendations:6/42(14.3%)of patients who passed a tolerance oral food challenge(OFC)did not eat the trigger food,4/22(18.2%)of patients who failed OFC ate the trigger food,and 9/18(50.0%)of patients who did not perform a tolerance OFC ate the trigger *** have analyzed some possible influencing factors and no difference was found to be statistically *** results are in line with those reported for IgE-mediated food *** has already been proposed by others,we suggest reassessing food consumption in all patients after a food challenge.

Endoscopic ultrasound radiofrequency ablation of pancreatic insulinoma in elderly patients:Three case reports

BACKGROUND Endoscopic ultrasound(EUS)-guided radiofrequency ablation(RFA)has recently been proposed as a local treatment for functional pancreatic neuroendocrine neoplasms in patients unfit for surgery,in order to obtain clinical syndrome *** on the safety and long-term effectiveness of this approach are scarce,and EUS-RFA procedures are not *** SUMMARY The present case series reports 3 elderly patients with a pancreatic insulinoma and comorbidities,locally treated by EUS-guided RFA with clinical success in terms of hypoglycemic *** procedures were performed during deep sedation,under EUS control with a 19 G needle,an electrode 5-mm in size at a power of 30 W and multiple RFA applications during the same session in order to treat the whole area of the *** relief of symptoms was evident in 2 patients after the first EUS-RFA,while in the third patient a second endoscopic treatment was *** 3 patients are symptom-free without need of medications after 24 mo of follow-up with imaging follow-up showing no disease recurrence.A single adverse event of intraprocedural bleeding occurred,which was successfully treated *** EUS-RFA represents an effective and safe alternative to surgery for the treatment of insulinomas in elderly patients at high surgical ***,larger multicenter studies withlonger follow-up are needed in order to better assess its safety and clinical success.
