The novel coronavirus disease(COVID-19)has hit the healthcare system worldwide.The risk of severe infection and mortality increases with advancing age,especially in subjects with comorbidities such as cardiovascular disease,hypertension,diabetes,obesity and cancer.Moreover,cardiovascular complications such as myocardial injury,heart failure and thromboembolism are frequently observed in COVID-19 cases,and several biomarkers(troponin,NTpro BNP and D-Dimer)have been identified as prognostic indicators of disease severity and worst outcome.Currently,there is no specific therapy against SARS-Co V-2,although many medications are under investigation.The aim of this review will be to explore the intertwined relationship between COVID-19 disease and the cardiovascular system,focusing on elderly population.The available supportive treatments along with the related concerns in elderly patients,due to their comorbidities and polypharmacotherapy,will be explored.

In this paper,after the successful applications to open water propeller performance estimations,the influence of transition sensitive and modified mass transfer models tuned to account for the laminar flow in the prediction of the cavitation inception of marine propulsors is investigated from the point of view of the unsteady functioning and induced pressure pulses.The VP1304(also known as PPTC)test case,for which dedicated data were collected during several workshops,is considered first.After preliminary analyses using RANS,also Detached Eddy Simulations(DES)are included to better account for the vortex dynamics and its influence on pressure pulses.Similarly to what observed in uniform inflow,results show a better agreement with the available measurements of propeller performances and confirm the reliability of the proposed approaches for unsteady,non-cavitating,model scale propeller predictions.The overall cavitation pattern is improved too by the application of the transition sensitive correction to the mass transfer model,but the complex dynamics of bubble cavitation observed in experiments prevents quantitatively better predictions in terms of thrust/torque breakdown and induced pressure pulses levels regardless the use of RANS or DES methods.

Oligodendrocytes(OLs)are highly specialized cells of the central nervous system(CNS).Their primary and most investigated role is to form myelin,a multilamellar fatty membrane that enwraps axons ensuring their insulation and the saltatory conduction of nerve impulses.The formation of myelin is a complex process during which the OL precursor cells(OPCs,also known as NG2-glia)become mature OLs through a highly regulated program of differentiation.In addition,OPCs persist in the adult grey and white matter parenchyma,representing approximately 6%of the total number of CNS cells.Beyond their role in myelin generation and turn-over,it is now clear that OPCs have the capability to control tissue homeostasis and to sense and react to inflammation which characterizes many neurological diseases.

Time reversal in quantum or classical systems described by an Hermitian Hamiltonian is a physically allowed process, which requires in principle inverting the sign of the Hamiltonian. Here we consider the problem of time reversal of a subsystem of discrete states coupled to an external environment characterized by a continuum of states, into which they generally decay. It is shown that, by flipping the discrete-continuum coupling from an Hermitian to a non-Hermitian interaction, thus resulting in a non unitary dynamics, time reversal of the subsystem of discrete states can be achieved, while the continuum of states is not reversed. Exact time reversal requires frequency degeneracy of the discrete states,or large frequency mismatch among the discrete states as compared to the strength of indirect coupling mediated by the continuum. Interestingly, periodic and frequent switch of the discrete-continuum coupling results in a frozen dynamics of the subsystem of discrete states.

The discontinuous nature of rock cutting can easily cause unwanted vibrations in the structure of a surface miner.If these vibrations are not properly addressed,the related stress cycles can gradually damage the chassis resulting in fatigue failures.These events can seriously undermine the safety of operators and digging operations may be stopped for days,with an obvious economic impact.This work presents an analysis of the dynamics of a surface miner,focusing on the interaction between cutting machine dynamics and cutting forces,which is a new approach for this type of machine.For this purpose,the authors developed a numerical model of the cutting process made up of(1)a multi-body model of the cutting machine,which takes into account the chassis's flexibility;(2)a model of the rotating cutting head;and(3)a model of the interaction between the cutting head and rock,based on Shao's model.The model was compared with experimental results and then used to investigate the effects of cutting speed and cutting depth on the machine dynamics.

Transcriptional regulation is critical to cellular processes of all organisms. Regulatory mechanisms often involve more than one transcription factor(TF) from different families, binding together and attaching to the DNA as a single complex. However, only a fraction of the regulatory partners of each TF is currently known. In this paper, we present the Transcriptional Interaction and Coregulation Analyzer(TICA), a novel methodology for predicting heterotypic physical interaction of TFs. TICA employs a data-driven approach to infer interaction phenomena from chromatin immunoprecipitation and sequencing(ChIP-seq) data. Its prediction rules are based on the distribution of minimal distance couples of paired binding sites belonging to different TFs which are located closest to each other in promoter regions. Notably, TICA uses only binding site information from input ChIP-seq experiments, bypassing the need to do motif calling on sequencing data. We present our method and test it on ENCODE ChIP-seq datasets, using three cell lines as reference including HepG2, GM12878, and K562. TICA positive predictions on ENCODE ChIP-seq data are strongly enriched when compared to protein complex(CORUM) and functional interaction(BioGRID) databases. We also compare TICA against both motif/ChIP-seq based methods for physical TF–TF interaction prediction and published literature. Based on our results, TICA offers significant specificity(average 0.902) while maintaining a good recall(average 0.284) with respect to CORUM, providing a novel technique for fast analysis of regulatory effect in cell lines. Furthermore, predictions by TICA are complementary to other methods for TF–TF interaction prediction(in particular, TACO and CENTDIST). Thus, combined application of these prediction tools results in much improved sensitivity in detecting TF–TF interactions compared to TICA alone(sensitivity of 0.526 when combining TICA with TACO and 0.585 when combining with CENTDIST)with little compromise in specificity(specificity 0.760 when combining

Usually,the response after a disastrous event requires decision-makers in emergency operative rooms to quickly outline and understand the current post-event situation,for planning and defining strategies for a contextualized response.Moreover,in many cases,disastrous events affect cross-border territories and/or involve multiple orga-nizations in responding to the demand generated by the event.These cases require a harmonized and coordinated response by all the institutions/subjects involved in emergency management.To address this challenge,this pa-per proposes the e-Atlas(emergency atlas)tool for showing and sharing information that embraces a response management perspective to explicitly support decision-makers in managing the criticalities of a post-earthquake situation.The e-Atlas has been designed and tested to:i)acquire sensible information for allowing decision-makers to understand in almost real-time the post-earthquake situational picture,and ii)share the representation of the situational picture among different users,allowing each of them to use it according to its specific require-ments.Applications of the tool are illustrated,to show how it is used in a transborder context in the North-East area of Italy.

Despite governing heat management in any realistic device,the microscopic mechanisms of heat transport in all-solid-state electrolytes are poorly known:existing calculations,all based on simplistic semi-empirical models,are unreliable for superionic conductors and largely overestimate their thermal conductivity.In this work,we deploy a combination of state-of-the-art methods to calculate the thermal conductivity of a prototypical Li-ion conductor,the Li_(3)ClO antiperovskite.By leveraging ab initio,machine learning,and force-field descriptions of interatomic forces,we are able to reveal the massive role of anharmonic interactions and diffusive defects on the thermal conductivity and its temperature dependence,and to eventually embed their effects into a simple rationale which is likely applicable to a wide class of ionic conductors.
