Modelling fuel loads of understorey vegetation and forest floor components in pine stands in NW Spain

In this study,310 destructively sampled plots were used to develop two equation systems for the three main pine species in NW Spain(P.pinaster;P.radiata and P.sylvestris):one for estimating loads of understorey fuel components by size and condition(live and dead)and another one for forest floor fuels.Additive systems of equations were simultaneously fitted for estimating fuel loads using overstorey,understorey and forest floor variables as regressors.The systems of equations included both the effect of pine species and the effect of understorey compositions dominated by ferns-brambles or by woody species,due to their obvious structural and physiological differences.In general,the goodness-of-fit statistics indicated that the estimates were reasonably robust and accurate for all of the fuel fractions.The best results were obtained for total understorey vegetation,total forest floor and raw humus fuel loads,with more than 76%of the observed variability explained,whereas the poorest results were obtained for coarse fuel loads of understory vegetation with a 53%of observed variability explained.To reduce the overall costs associated with the field inventories necessary for operational use of the models,the additive systems were fitted again using only overstorey variables as potential regressors.Only relationships for fine(<6 mm)and total understorey vegetation and total forest floor fuel loads were obtained,indicating the complexity of the forest overstorey-understorey and overstorey-forest floor relationships.Nevertheless,these models explained around 52%of the observed variability.Finally,equations estimating the total understorey vegetation and the total forest floor fuel loads based only on canopy cover were fitted.These models explained only 26%-32%of the observed variability;however,their main advantage is that although understorey vegetation in forested landscapes is largely invisible to remote sensing,canopy cover can be estimated with moderate accuracy,allowing for landscape-scale estimates of total fuel lo

Currently,Salmonella spp.is the bacterium causing the highest number of food-borne diseases(FADs)in the world.It is primarily associated with contaminated water used to that irrigates crops from intensive livestock farming.However,literature emphasizes that the reservoirs for Salmonella spp.remain in wildlife and there are unconventional sources or secondary reservoirs,such as soil.Human soil-borne diseases have not been modeled in spatial scenarios,and therefore it is necessary to consider soil and other climatic factors to anticipate the emergence of new strains or serotypes with potential threat to public and animal health.The objective of this research was to investigate whether edaphic and climatic factors are associated with the occurrence and prevalence of Salmonella spp.in Northwestern Mexico.We estimated the potential distribution of Salmonella spp.with an interpolation method of unsampled kriging areas for 15 environmental variables,considering that these factors have a seasonal dynamic of change during the year and modifications in longer periods.Subsequently,a database was generated with human salmonellosis cases reported in the epidemiological bulletins of the National System of Epidemiological Surveillance(SIVE).For the Northwest region,there were 30,595 human cases of paratyphoid and other salmonellosis reported have been reported in Baja California state,71,462 in Chihuahua,and 16,247 in Sonora from 2002 to 2019.The highest prevalence was identified in areas with higher temperatures between 35 and 37℃,and precipitation greater than 1000 mm.The edaphic variables limited the prevalence and geographical distribution of Salmonella spp.,because the region is characterized by presenting a low percentage of organic matter(≤4.3),and most of the territory is classified as aridic and xeric,which implies that the humidity comprises≤180 days a year.Finally,the seasonal time series indicated that in the states of Baja California and Chihuahua the rainy quarter of the year is 18.7%and 17.01%above a typical quar

The concept of Digital Earth(DE)was formalized by Al Gore in 1998.At that time the technologies needed for its implementation were in an embryonic stage and the concept was quite visionary.Since then digital technologies have progressed significantly and their speed and pervasiveness have generated and are still causing the digital transformation of our society.This creates new opportunities and challenges for the realization of DE.‘What is DE today?’,‘What could DE be in the future?’,and‘What is needed to make DE a reality?’.To answer these questions it is necessary to examine DE considering all the technological,scientific,social,and economic aspects,but also bearing in mind the principles that inspired its formulation.By understanding the lessons learned from the past,it becomes possible to identify the remaining scientific and technological challenges,and the actions needed to achieve the ultimate goal of a‘Digital Earth for all’.This article reviews the evolution of the DE vision and its multiple definitions,illustrates what has been achieved so far,explains the impact of digital transformation,illustrates the new vision,and concludes with possible future scenarios and recommended actions to facilitate full DE implementation.

Almond[Prunus dulcis Miller(D.A.Webb)]is the main tree nut species worldwide.Here,genotyping-by-sequencing(GBS)was applied to 149 almond cultivars from the ex situ collections of the Italian Council for Agricultural Research(CREA)and the Spanish National Research Council(CSIC),leading to the detection of 93,119 single-nucleotide polymorphisms(SNPs).The study of population structure outlined four distinct genetic groups and highlighted diversification between the Mediterranean and Californian gene pools.Data on SNP diversity and runs of homozygosity(ROHs)allowed the definition of kinship,inbreeding,and linkage disequilibrium(LD)decay in almond cultivated germplasm.Four-year phenotypic observations,gathered on 98 cultivars of the CREA collection,were used to perform a genome-wide association study(GWAS)and,for the first time in a crop species,homozygosity mapping(HM),resulting in the identification of genomic associations with nut,shell,and seed weight.Both GWAS and HM suggested that loci controlling nut and seed weight are mostly independent.Overall,this study provides insights on the almond cultivation history and delivers information of major interest for almond genetics and breeding.In a broader perspective,our results encourage the use of ROHs in crop science to estimate inbreeding,choose parental combinations minimizing the risk of inbreeding depression,and identify genomic footprints of selection for specific traits.

An analysis of the reproducibility from signal record bioelectric heart activity is presented. The measurements were carried out with a recently patented medical device, which one is able to record the curves of pressure arterial and venous as those obtained using the gold standard technique in these evaluations, the cardiac catheterization technique. The measurements were carried out 15 health subjects and patients;each one was measured 5 times in order to have auto-correlations and correlations of these records. Analysis indicates correlations from 0.9 to 1 as long as p values were below 0.05. It is indicated an excellent reproducibility of evaluated patients.
