A new liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry method for the determination of carbamazepine,clonazepam,alprazolam,estazolam and phenytoin in human plasma has been developed by using diazepam as an internal *** separation was performed on a Zorbax SB-C18 column(30 mm × 2.1 mm,3.5 ?m) with a mobile phase consisting of methanol and aqueous 25 mm ammonium acetate using gradient elution.A diethyl ether extraction method was used for the extraction of five anti-epilepsy *** final extract was injected for analysis by LC-mS/*** method was validated within the concentration range of 50-5000 ng mL-1 for five anti-epilepsy *** precision of the assay(RSD%) was less than 10% at all concentration levels within the tested *** method recoveries for all samples were more than 90%.The results indicate that the method is specific,sensitive and accurate,and suitable to study the pharmacokinetics,to adjust the dosage for individual administration,and to monitor the drug-concentration and drug abuse of the five anti-epilepsy drugs.

Ephedra comprises approximately 50 species,which are roughly equally distributed between the Old and New World deserts,but not in the intervening regions(amphitropical range).Great heterogeneity in the substitution rates of Gnetales(Ephedra,Gnetum,and Welwitschia) has made it difficult to infer the ages of the major divergence events in Ephedra,such as the timing of the Beringian disjunction in the genus and the entry into South ***,we use data from as many Gnetales species and genes as available from GenBank and from a recent study to investigate the timing of the major divergence *** of the tradeoff between the amount of missing data and taxon/gene sampling,we reduced the initial matrix of 265 accessions and 12 loci to 95 accessions and 10 loci,and further to 42 species(and 7736 aligned nucleotides) to achieve stationary distributions in the Bayesian molecular clock *** from a relaxed clock with an uncorrelated rates model and fossil-based calibration reveal that New World species are monophyletic and diverged from their mostly Asian sister clade some 30 mya,fitting with many other Beringian *** split between the single North American and the single South American clade occurred approximately 25 mya,well before the closure of the Panamanian ***,the biogeographic history of Ephedra appears dominated by long-distance dispersal,but finer-scale studies are needed to test this hypothesis.

Studies in several songbird species have shown that treating females with the androgenic steroid hormone testoste- rone （T） can negatively affect female reproductive behaviors and breeding success. As the effects of T on females appear to be species-specific, it is not clear if similar effects of high T occur in non-songbird species. Here, we studied the effects of T supplementation on female reproductive behavior and oviposition in the budgerigar, melopsittacus undulatus, a small monogamous parrot species with distinct sex differences in parental behavior. We experimentally increased T concentrations to male-like levels in T-treated females compared to controls and we allowed females to breed. We found no significant effects of treatment on the latency to enter the nestbox but T treatment significantly interfered with oviposition. Our results show that T-treated females were seven times less likely to produce a clutch than control females. As we found that T treatment had a strong inhibitory effect on oviposition, our results indicate that female budgerigars suffer fitness costs from male-like plasma T levels. Therefore, it may be possible that, also in non-songbird species, selection for higher T levels in males is constrained by a correlated response to selection which imposes fitness costs on females in terms of reproduction. Evaluating whether or not this is indeed the case requires further work combining different approaches to the study of the evolution of male and female testosterone levels [Current Zoology 61 （4）： 586-595, 2015].

Reconstructing a robust species phylogeny and disentangling the evolutionary and biogeographic history of the gymnosperm genus Ephedra,which has a large genome and rich polyploids,remain a big *** we reconstructed a transcriptome-based phylogeny of 19 diploid Ephedra species,and explored evolutionary reticulations in this genus represented by 50 diploid and polyploid species,using four low-copy nuclear and nine plastid *** diploid species phylogeny indicates that the mediterranean species diverged first,and the remaining species split into three clades,including the American species(Clade A),***,and all other Asian species(Clade B).The single-gene trees placed *** sister to Clade A,Clade B,or Clades A+B in similar proportions,suggesting that radiation and gene flow likely occurred in the early evolution of *** addition,reticulate evolution occurred not only among the deep nodes,but also in the recently evolved South American species,which further caused difficulty in phylogenetic ***,we found that allopolyploid speciation was pervasive in *** study also suggests that Ephedra very likely originated in the Tethys coast during the late Cretaceous,and the South American Ephedra species have a single origin by dispersal from mexico or North America.

A comparison of perspectives on costs in emergency care among emergency department patients and residents

BACKGROUND: Costs of care are increasingly important in healthcare policy and, more recently, in clinical care in the emergency department(ED). We compare ED resident and patient perspectives surrounding costs in emergency ***: We conducted a mixed methods study using surveys and qualitative interviews at a single, academic ED in the United States. The two study populations were a convenience sample of adult ED patients(>17 years of age) and ED residents training at the same institution. Participants answered open- and closed-ended questions on costs, medical decision making, cost-related compliance, and communication about costs. Closed-ended data were tabulated and described using standard statistics while open-ended responses were analyzed using grounded ***: Thirty ED patients and 24 ED residents participated in the study. Both patients and residents generally did not have knowledge of medical costs. Patients were comfortable discussing costs while residents were less comfortable. Residents agreed that doctors should consider costs when making medical decisions whereas patients somewhat disagreed. Additionally, residents generally took costs into consideration during clinical decision-making, yet nearly all residents agreed that they had too little education on ***: There were several notable differences in ED patient and resident perspectives on costs in this U.S. sample. While patients somewhat disagree that cost should factor into decision making, generally they are comfortable discussing costs yet report having insuf? cient knowledge of what care costs. Conversely, ED residents view costs as important and agree that cost should factor into decision making but lack education on what emergency care costs.
