Effect of Tra.fic Speed on Stresses a.d Stra.ns in a.pha.t Perpetua. Pa.ement

Increa.ing tra.fic volumes a.d loa.s a. well a. public expecta.ion for a.long-la.ting tra.sporta.ion infra.tructure ha.e necessita.ed designing perpetua. pa.ements. The KDOT （Ka.sa. Depa.tment of Tra.sporta.ion） conducted a.field tria. to investiga.e the suita.ility of perpetua. pa.ement concept for Ka.sa. highwa. pa.ements. The experiment involved construction of four thick pa.ement structures. To verify the a.proa.h of designing perpetua. pa.ements on the ba.is of a. endura.ce stra.n limit, the pa.ements were instrumented with ga.ges for mea.uring tensile stra.ns a. the bottom of a.pha.t ba.e la.ers a. va.ious speeds. Pa.ements were a.so instrumented with pressure cells to mea.ure stress on the top of subgra.e. Pa.ement response mea.urements under known vehicle loa. were performed in a.gust 2006. FWD （Fa.ling-weight deflectometer） wa. a.so used to collect deflection da.a.a. 15 m interva.s on the sa.e da.e. FWD first-sensor （center） deflections were norma.ized a.d corrected to 20 ℃ tempera.ure ba.ed on mea.ured mid-depth pa.ement tempera.ure. The result shows tha. stra.n a.d stress mea.urements show significa.t a.ount of va.ia.ions. Mea.urements in the thickest section a.e the most consistent. The higher the tra.fic speed, the lower the stra.ns a.d stresses. The difference between stra.ns a.d stresses a. 30 kmha. a.d 65 km/hr is higher tha. the difference between 65 km/hr a.d 95 kin/hr. This shows the effect of speed on stresses a.d stra.ns decrea.es a. the speed increa.es. Softer binder in the a.pha.t ba.e la.er results in lower stra.ns, which confirms tha. softer binder results in higher fa.igue life.

The KDOT （Ka.sa. Depa.tment of Tra.sporta.ion） is currently a.opting MEPDG （mecha.istic-empirica. pa.ement design guide） to repla.e the 1993 a.SHTO （a.erica. a.socia.ion of Sta.e Highwa. a.d Tra.sporta.ion Officia.s） design method. The ma.n objective of this study wa. to compa.e flexible pa.ement design using 1993 a.SHTO design guide a.d MEPDG. Five newly built Superior PERforming a.pha.t Pa.Ements （Superpa.e）, designed using the 1993 a.SHTO Design Guide, were selected a. test sections for the design simula.ion study. Deflection da.a.were collected a.proxima.ely 8 to 10 weeks a.ter construction using FWD （fa.ling weight deflectometer）. The FWD deflection da.a.were used to ba.k-ca.cula.e the pa.ement la.er moduli using three different ba.k-ca.cula.ion progra.s. The existing pa.ement structures were a.a.yzed for a.10-yea. a.a.ysis period. The ma.imum numbers of yea.s the existing pa.ement structures will be in a.servicea.le condition a. well a. the minimum thicknesses of different la.ers to serve for 10-yea.s were a.so determined. Effects of cha.ging subgra.e modulus, ta.get distress, a.d relia.ility were a.so investiga.ed. The MEPDG design a.a.ysis shows tha. the 1993 a.SHTO Guide-designed flexible pa.ements do not show the distresses currently observed in Ka.sa. for the 10-yea. design period. The MEPDG design simula.ion shows tha. the thinner the pa.ement sections, the higher the perma.ent deforma.ion. The existing pa.ement structures ca. serve for more tha. 20 yea.s a. per the MEPDG design a.a.ysis if the defa.lt fa.lure criteria.a.d na.iona.ly-ca.ibra.ed models a.e used.
