Three standard minerals GA-1550 biotite,LP-6 biotite and Bern-4M muscovite used for K-Ar and Ar-Ar dating have been investigated by the single grain Rb-Sr *** to the K-Ar and Ar-Ar results previously reported,these mica standards nevertheless show complex characteristics in the Rb-Sr isotopic *** on eight individual grains of GA-1550 biotite gives a Rb-Sr isochron age of 98.7±1.9 Ma,consistent with previous dating results of the K-Ar and stepwise heating and laser ablation Ar-Ar *** evidence of the laser ablation Ar-Ar analyses in many previous studies demonstrates that LP-6 biotite is considerably inhomogeneous in the K-Ar isotopic system,Rb-Sr isotopic analyses on ten individual biotite grains show achievement of Sr isotopic equilibrium during crystallization.A Rb-Sr isochron age of 128.2±2.2 Ma calculated from the analytical results is concordant with those previously reported K-Ar and Ar-Ar ages obtained from c.30 mg aliquots of biotite *** age reproducibility on Bern-4M muscovite was previously achieved by K-Ar and Ar-Ar dating by total fusion in c.30 mg aliquots of muscovite grains,but single grain Rb-Sr analytical results in this study demonstrate considerable disequilibrium of Sr isotopic system during crystallization of *** discordance in the Rb-Sr and K-Ar isotopic systems of two standard minerals indicates complex factors that can influence isotopic disequilibrium of both isotopic systems.

The Sm-Nd isotopic system,one of the important techniques for dating and geochemical tracing,has been widely used in *** and accurate measurements of Nd isotopic ratios are more difficult to achieve for microsamples that contain less than 50ng Nd,when routine Nd technique is applied on thermal ionization mass spectrometer(TIMS).Compared to Nd technique,the NdO technique,owing to more efficient ionization,is a better choice for high precision measurements of Nd isotopic ratios of micro- or low-content *** study presents measurement results of sub-nanogram size samples of standard reference solution and rock-powder using NdO technique on the latest TIMS (GV product IsoProbe-T).Sixteen rock-powder references and four reference solutions were measured both by NdO and Nd techniques for an evaluation of accuracy and precision of measurements obtained by the NdO *** show that analytical precision and reproducibility of NdO measurements of sub-nanogram Nd is comparable with those obtained by the Nd measurements of samples containing 200 ng *** precision of the Nd/Nd ratios achieved with both techniques is better than 0.003%.Our results show that the microsample NdO technique is a very promising method for high resolution Sm-Nd geochronology and isotopic tracing.

We describe a precise and accurate method for the direct determination of the Sr/Sr isotope ratio of botded Sr-rich natural mineral drinking water using multiple collector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry(MC-ICP-MS).The method is validated by the comparative analysis of the same water with and without cation-exchange resin *** work indicates that isobarically interfering elements can be corrected for when Rb/Sr<0.05(Rb/Sr<0.015),and that the matrix elements(Ca,Mg,K and Na) have no significant effect on the accuracy of the Sr isotope *** method is simple,rapid,eliminates sample preparation time,and avoids potential contamination during complicated sample-preparation procedures. Therefore,the high sample throughput inherent to the MC-ICP-MS can be fully exploited.

The Sichuan Basin,located in the western margin of Yangtze Plate,is one of the important oil-gas-bearing basins in china. During the Early Permian-Middle Triassic,the Sichuan Basin experienced regional lithospheric extension and Emeishan basalt activities,both of which influenced the basin development and thermal *** we simulated the thermal effects of lithospheric extension and the Emeishan mantle plume based on different geodynamical *** results indicated that the lithospheric temperature together with the basement heat flow was generally increasing with time due to *** the stretching factor was relatively small,the thinning of lithosphere,and consequently the thermal disturbance,was not great. The lithospheric extension yielded about 20%increase of the basement heat flow,with maximum value of 60-62 mW m in the Early *** plume model shows that the thermal evolution of the inner zone above the plume head was influenced greatly by plume *** the outer zone and its outside area where the Sichuan Basin is located were affected only *** basalts that had erupted in the southwestern basin might disturb the basin temperature significantly,although shortly and ***,the thermal history of the Sichuan basin during the Early Permian-Middle Triassic was controlled by the lithospheric extension,but locally it superimposed thermal effects of basalt activities in its southwestern area.

A passive seismic experiment across the Longmenshan(LMS) fault belt had been conducted between August 2006 and July 2007 for the understanding of geodynamic process between the Eastern Tibet and Sichuan *** herein collected 3677 first P arrival times with high precision from seismograms of 288 teleseismic events so as to reconstruct the upper mantle velocity *** results show that the depth of the Lithosphere-asthenosphere boundary(LAB) changes from 70 km beneath Eastern Tibet to about 110 km beneath Longquanshan,Sichuan Basin,which is consistent with the receiver function imaging *** very thin mantle part of the lithosphere beneath Eastern Tibet may suggest the lith-osphere delamination due to strong interaction between the Tibetan eastward escaping flow and the rigid resisting Sichuan basin,which can be further supported by the existences of two high-velocity anomalies beneath LAB in our imaging *** also find there are two related low-velocity anomalies beneath the LMS fault belt,which may indicate magmatic upwelling from lithosphere delamination and account for the origin of tremendous energy needed by the devastating Wenchuan earthquake.

This paper presents a stratigraphic and sedimentary study of late Paleoproterozoic to early Mesoproterozoic successions of the northern margin of the North china craton,including the Changcheng and Nankou Groups. A reconstruction of the tectono-sedimentary history of these two groups demonstrates that the northern North china craton experienced a two-stage *** recorded by the Changcheng Croup,early synrift subsidence and sedimentation were controlled by normal faults and accompanied by *** contrast,a late postrift stage was characterized by broad subsidence and widespread occurrence of shallow-marine clastic and carbonate rocks.A transgressive unconformity is identified,and together with its time-equivalent conformable contact,clearly separates the synrift and postrift *** diachronous unconformity can be related to continental rifting and the separation of the North china craton from the adjacent India craton at roughly 1600 Ma,and is thus interpreted as a breakup *** age of ca.1600 Mais constrained by newly reported precise SHRIMP U-Pb zircon ages of transgressive deposits in the overlying Mesoproterozoic Dahongyu and Gaoyuzhuang Formations,just coincident with the Paleoproterozoic to Mesoproterozoic *** 1600 Ma time estimate for the tectonic departure of the North china craton from the India craton is comparable with the timing for the breakup of Columbia,a pre-Rodinia supercontinent containing almost all of the earth’s continental blocks.

The magnetic properties of magnetosome magnetite are of interdisciplinary interest because magnetosomes are potential carriers of natural remanent magnetization and paleoenvironment,as well as novel nano-biomaterials in biotechnological and biomedical *** carried out magnetic and electron transmission microscopy analyses of fresh Magnetospirillum magneticum AMB-1 whole cells and isolated *** revealed that AMB-1 synthesized single-domain magnetite magneto-somes, which are arranged in the form of linear fragmental *** distinct differences of magnetic properties between these two samples can be faithfully interpreted in terms of spatial arrangement of magnetosomes and magnetostatic *** the whole cells,the strong intra-chain interactions and weak inter-chain interactions generate behaviors of non-interacting uniaxial single-domain ***δ-ratio is 3.0 and passes the Moskowitz *** contrast,the isolated magnetosome sample has reduced values of coercivity andδ-ratio(1.5),due to increasing three-dimensional magnetostatic interactions and collapse of magnetosome *** observations provide useful insights into applications of the biogenic magnetite(magnetosomes)in magnetic nano-materials and magnetofossils in the paleomagnetic and environmental magnetism.

The fluvio-lacustrine sequence of the Shanwang Basin,eastern china,preserves a rich and important terrestrial fossil fauna and flora;the exceptional preservation of these fossils reveals the dynamics of ancient mammalian ecosystems and plant ***,the timing of this sedimentary sequence has been the subject of debate for *** we contribute to this debate by presenting the detailed results of Ar/Ar analysis of the basalts above,below,and within the Shanwang *** dates place stringent constraints on the age of Shanwang Formation and associated ***/Ar ages obtained from basalts of the Niushan and Yaoshan Formations,which underlie and overlie the Shanwang Formation, are 21.0±2.5 Ma(2σ,full external error) and 17.3±1.5 Ma(2σ,full external error),respectively. The Ar/Ar age of the basalt in the Shanwang Formation is 17-18 *** the age constraints of the basalts of the Yaoshan and Shanwang Formations,the age of the Shanwang biota is estimated to be ca.17 Ma,late Burdigalian of the Early Miocene,indicating that the deposition of this fauna coincided with the onset of the mid-Miocene Climatic *** results provide new age constraints on the Shanwang mammal fauna,and independently support interpretations that this fauna can be assigned to chronozone MN4,and correlated with middle Orleanian of the European Land Mammal *** to late Hemingfordian of the North American Land Mammal *** diversity of the Shanwang Formation could reflect the global-scale mid-Miocene Climatic Optimum.

In situ U-Pb dating of titanite by LA-ICPMS

Titanite is an ideal mineral for U-Pb isotopic dating because of its relatively high U,Th and Pb ***,we developed a technique for U-Pb dating of titanite using the 193 nm ArF laser-ablation system and Agilent 7500a *** of titanite (BLR-1 and OLT-1) and zircon (91500 and GJ-1) were dated using single spot and line raster scan analytical *** check the matrix effect,titanite (BLR-1) and zircon (91500) standards were analyzed as the external *** weighted mean 206 Pb/238 U ages of OLT-1 titanite are 1015±5 Ma (2,n=24) and 1017±6 Ma (2,n=24) by single spot and line raster scan analyses,respectively,using BLR-1 titanite as the external *** ages are consistent with its reference age of about 1014 ***,using 91500 zircon as the external standard,the weighted mean 206 Pb/238 U ages are 917±4 Ma (2,n=24) and 927±5 Ma (2,n=24) for BLR-1 titanite,and 891±4 Ma (2,n=24) and 901±5 Ma (2,n=24) for OLT-1 titanite by single spot and line raster scan analyses,*** is evident that these ages are ～12% younger than their reference *** results reveal that significant matrix effect does exist between different kinds of minerals during LA-ICPMS U-Pb age determination,whereas it is insignificant between same ***,same mineral must be used as the external standard for fractionation corrections during in situ LA-ICPMS U-Pb age *** addition,we determined U-Pb ages for titanites from the Early Cretaceous Fangshan pluton,which indicates a rapid cooling history of this pluton.
