Petrography and mineral chemistry of two new ureilites, GRV 021512 and 022931, from the Grove Mountains, Antarctica, are reported in this paper. GRV 021512 exhibits a typical ureilite texture, and consists of 48.3% olivine, 9.4% pigeonite and 38.1% carbo- naceous interstitial material and/or reduction product. GRV 022931 has a cataclastic porphyritic texture, and consists of 19.1% olivine and 14.1% pigeonite embedded in 66.3% carbonaceous interstitial material and/or reduction product. The coarse-grained olivine and pigeonite in both meteorites have homogeneous cores, and they are FeO-rich within the range of the ferroan subgroup (subgroup I) of olivine-pigeonite ureilites. All olivine grains of the meteorites show reduction zones along boundaries and cracks. Abundant diamond coexists with graphite as graphite-rich patches and veins in the carbonaceous interstitial material. Petrogenesis of both meteorites and the origin of diamond are discussed.

Cenozoic volcanic rocks from the Haoti, Dangchang County of the western Qinling Mountains, contain a few clearly-zoned olivines. These olivines are relatively big in grain sizes and usually have cracks or broken features. Their cores have similar compositions （Mg#=90.4-91.0） to those for the peridotitic xenoliths entrained in host volcanic rocks and their rims are close to the compositions of olivine phenocrysts （Mg#=85.5-81.9）. The CaO contents in these zoned olivines are lower than 0.1%. These features demonstrate that the clearly-zoned olivines are xenocrysts and disaggregated from mantle peridotites. The zoned texture was the result of the interaction between the olivine and host magma. Available data show that the volcanic rocks would have been derived from the mantle source metasomatized by subducted hydrathermally-altered oceanic crust. The formation of these Cenozoic volcanic rocks was perhaps related to the rapid uplift of the Tibetan Plateau.

Large ripples are described from the Mesoproterozoic Hilfordy Formation in the Kimberley region,northwestern *** ripple index (RI) and ripple symmetry index (RSI) suggest the Kimberley ripples were likely generated by storm *** wave height is up to 15 23 cm and wave length is up to 70 90 *** features,incorporated with other morphological characteristics such as symmetry,steepness,ripple spacing,and compositions,agree well with the megaripples previously reported from the intertidal-nearshore settings of modern seas and the geological *** Mesoproterozoic ripples were likely generated by the storm-induced *** survey of the global record of megaripples reveals that such structures have occurred through the geological past from the Archean to present *** were particularly common in the Neoproterozoic and had the largest ripple length and ripple height among the modern and geological *** is probably because extreme storms prevailed at that *** frequent occurrence in present day beach is probably due to the prevalence of extreme storms caused by the monsoon or tsunami/earthquake influenced climatic regimes.

Short-lived giant mafic dyke swarms are keys to the interpretation of continental evolution and tectonics,reconstruction of continental palaeogeographical regimes,and petro-genesis of *** 1.78 Ga Taihang-Lvliang dyke swarm,one of the most significant and best-preserved Precambrian swarms in the central part of the North china craton(NCC),is reviewed and *** is interpreted to have a radiating geometry that is compatible with the Xiong’er triple-junction rift,in which the Xiong’er volcanic province is proposed to be the extrusive counterpart of this *** resulted in significant extension,uplift and magmatic accretion of the NCC,and it is comparable with the Phanerozoic large igneous provinces(LIPs) in areal extent(c.0.3 Mkm)and estimated volume(c.0.3 Mkm),short lifespan( china LIP is unique in that it comprises large volumes of both mafic and intermediate *** could have resulted from extensive mantle-crust interaction, probably driven by a large-scale mantle upwelling.A plume tectonic model is favoured by several lines of supporting evidence(*** volcanic flows correlated over large areas and a giant fanning dyke swarm with plume-affinitive chemistry).It could responsible for massive sulphide(Pb-Zn)and gold(Au-Ag)ore deposits in the Xiong’er volcanic province. Dismembered remnants of this magmatism in other block(s),with potential candidates in South America,Australia and India,could identify other cratonic blocks that were formerly connected to the North china craton.

A thermodynamic model to predict phase equilibrium of methane and carbon dioxide hydrate in aqueous electrolyte solutions is *** the Pitzer model to account for the variation of water activity due to electrolytes and dissolved gas in aqueous solutions,we extended the model based on ab initio molecular potential developed recently by us for the CH-HO and CO-HO binary systems to the CH(or CO-HO-salts *** of the model with extensive experimental data indicates that this model can accurately predict the phase equilibrium of CH hydrate and CO hydrate in various electrolyte solutions(such as aqueous NaCl,KCl, CaCl,NaCl + KCl,NaCl + CaCl solutions,and seawater) from zero to high ionic strength(about 6 m) and from low to high pressures.

A thermodynamic model is presented to calculate methane solubility,liquid phase density and gas phase composition of the HO-CH and HO-CH-NaCl systems from 273 to 523 K(possibly up to 573 K),from 1 to 2000 bar and from 0 to 6 mol kg□1 of NaCl with experimental *** a more strict theoretical approach and using updated experimental data, this model made substantial improvements over previous models:(1) the accuracy of methane solubility in pure water in the temperature range between 273 and 283 K is increased from about 10%to about 5%,but confirms the accuracy of the Duan model[Duan Z.,Moller N.,Weare J.H., *** of methane solubilities in natural waters to high ionic strength from 0 to 250℃and from 0 to 1600 *** 56,1451-1460]above 283 K up to 2000 bar;(2) the accuracy of methane solubility in the NaCl aqueous solutions is increased from>12%to about 6%on average from 273 K and 1 bar to 523 K and 2000 bar;(3) this model is able to calculate water content in the gas phase and liquid phase density,which cannot be calculated by previous models;and(4) it covers a wider range of temperature and pressure *** a simple approach,this model is extended to predict CH4 solubility in other aqueous salt solutions containing Na,K,Mg,Ca,Cl and SO,such as seawater and geothermal brines,with excellent *** model is also able to calculate homogenization pressure of fluid inclusions(CH-HO-NaCl) and CH solubility in water at gas-liquid-hydrate phase equilibrium. Based on our previous development of the molecular interaction potential for pure HO and CO[Zhang,Z.G.,Duan,***-isobaric molecular dynamics simulations of the PVT properties of water over wide range of temperatures and ***. Earth Planet Interiors 149,335-354;Zhang,Z.G,Duan,*** optimized molecular potential for carbon ***.122,214507]and the ab initio potential surface across CO-HO molecules constructed in this study,we carried out more than one thousand molecular dynamics simulations of the PVTx properties of the CO-HO mixtures in the temperature-pressure range from 673.15 to 2573.15 K up to 10.0 *** with extensive experimental PVTx data indicates that the simulated results generally agree with experimental data within 2%in density,equivalent to experimental *** the data under the highest experimental temperature-pressure conditions(up to 1673 K and 1.94 GPa) are well predicted with the agreement within 1.0%in density,indicating that the high accuracy of the simulation is well retained as the temperature and pressure *** consistent and stable predictability of the simulation from low to high temperature-pressure and the fact that the molecular dynamics simulation resort to no experimental data but to ab initio molecular potential makes us convinced that the simulation results should be reliable up to at least 2573 K and 10 GPa with errors less than 2%in *** order to integrate all the simulation results of this study and previous studies [Zhang and Duan,2005a,2005b]and the experimental data for the calculation of volumetric properties(volume,density,and excess volume),heat properties,and chemical properties(fugacity, activity,and possibly supercritical phase separation),an equation of state(EOS) is laboriously developed for the CO,HO,and CO-HO *** EOS reproduces all the experimental and simulated data covering a wide temperature and pressure range from 673.15 to 2573.

A model is developed for the calculation of the speciation equilibrium of H,OH,HCO,CO,and CO2(aq)) in aqueous solutions coupled with liquid-vapor phase equilibrium in the CO-HO-NaCl system from 273 to 523 K,from 0 to 1000 bar (possibly to 2000 bar),and from 0 to 5.0 molality(m) of *** first and second ionization constants of carbonic acid,pH values in aqueous solutions,and their dependence on temperature(T),pressure(P) and NaCl concentrations can be calculated with accuracy close to those of experiments in the stated T-P-m *** the specific ion-interaction equations of Pitzer to calculate activity coefficients,the model is also able to accurately predict the difference between dissociation constants and apparent dissociation constants,and the concentrations of H,OH,HCO,CO,and CO2(aq)) at a given T-P-m condition. Compared to previous models,this model covers larger T-P-m space and much more closely reproduces experimental results, especially in the elevated pressure *** without fitting to the experimental data for pH values,dissociation constants and apparent dissociation constants at pressures above the saturation pressures of pure water,this model can accurately predicted these properties up to high pressures.A computer program based on this model is developed and online calculation is made available at: ***/***.
