Reevaluation of dialect boundaries in the Yellowhammer(Emberiza citrinella)based on citizen science data:Should we split or lump?

Dialects are a specific form of geographic variation of birdsong with relatively sharp boundaries between distinct song characteristics,which provide opportunities for focused studies of processes underlying the emergence of spatial patterns in *** songbird species that exhibit dialects became models for such research,and for some of them large-scale datasets were assembled that included recordings provided by the *** them,the Yellowhammer(Emberiza citrinella,Emberizidae) is particularly prominent,as it has been recently a subject of dedicated citizen science projects focusing on its dialect *** most successful,in terms of public participation as well as the number and density of obtained recordings,was the Dialects of Czech Yellowhammers(DCY) project,which assembled detailed data at the whole-country level.A mosaic of almost all common song variants known across Europe was observed in Czechia,but the results indicated that some of the traditionally recognized Yellowhammer dialects may not represent geographically clustered song variants,at least not in Central *** quantitatively analysed variation(frequency and temporal characteristics and modulation) of the terminal song element in three dialects defined by arbitrary frequency thresholds in *** analyses indicated that pooling these to two distinct groups reflects the variation in the songs,as well as their spatial distribution,better than retaining the current classification to three dialects or their finer splitting to even more *** provide simple measures that may be used for classification of these Yellowhammer song variants in Central ***,we warn from indiscriminate transposing of results from one region to another,as that may lead to substantial *** studies of birdsong variation will benefit from big data assembled by citizen scientists,but to maximise their usefulness for further dialect research,careful delineation of d

Skyline-Based Registration of 3D Laser Scans

Acquisition and registration of terrestrial 3D laser scans is a fundamental task in mapping and modeling of cities in three dimensions. To automate this task marker-flee registration methods are required. Based on the existence of skyline features, this paper proposes a novel method. The skyline features are extracted from panoramic 3D scans and encoded as strings enabling the use of string matching for merging the scans. Initial results of the proposed method in the old city center of Bremen are presented.

Simulation of fire impact on forest floor renewal in pine forests was based on predictions for 2100 by the Canadian Climate Centre for increase in temperatures of by4.5℃and total precipitation by 14%in the West Siberian pre-forest-steppes and empirical regression relationships between them and the degree of burnt forest floor,as well as amount of Pinus sylvestris *** was predicted that by 2100,pine regeneration on fire prone sites under the canopy of the dominant forest type will increase by 29-54%compared to the 1980 s but on adjacent open sites,regeneration will decrease twice as *** means that the regeneration potential and pine population stability in pre-forest-steppes will become as poor as it is today.

The role of mRNA splicing in prostate cancer

Alternative splicing （AS） is a crucial step in gene expression. It is subject to intricate regulation, and its deregulation in cancer can lead to a wide array of neoplastic phenotypes. A large body of evidence implicates splice isoforms in most if not all hallmarks of cancer, including growth, apoptosis, invasion and metastasis, angiogenesis, and metabolism. AS has important clinical implications since it can be manipulated therapeutically to treat cancer and represents a mechanism of resistance to therapy. In prostate cancer （PCa） AS also plays a prominent role and this review will summarize the current knowledge of alternatively spliced genes with important functional consequences. We will highlight accumulating evidence on AS of the components of the two critical pathways in PCa： androgen receptor （AR） and phosphoinositide 3-kinase （PI3K）. These observations together with data on dysregulation of splice factors in PCa suggest that AR and PI3K pathways may be interconnected with previously unappreciated splicing regulatory networks. In addition, we will discuss several lines of evidence implicating splicing regulation in the development of the castration resistance.

Effects of Morphological Integrity of Secondary Feather on Their Drag Reduction in Pigeons

Flight feathers of birds interact with the air flow during *** the observed low drag and high lift values at wind speeds from 9.0 to 19.8 m/s can be achieved due to the feather aerodynamics remains *** the present paper,we tested and compared morphological changes,drag reduction and flow visualization results of intact,damaged,and artificial feathers at different wind speeds in a wind *** the analysis of the drag force and resultant force angle,we proved that the integrity of feathers,whose barbs are usually closely interconnected,played an important role in the drag,which potentially triggers excellent drag reduction *** wind tunnel tests indicated that intact secondary feathers had a surprisingly high maximum drag reduction property at v?=?9 m/s compared with the feathers,where the integrity of barbs was *** hook cascades facilitated elasticity under pressure and suitable permeability in an intact feather,when the hooks were *** was indicated that the suitable permeability of intact feathers would prevent flow separation and reduce drag force at low wind speed;at high wind speed,elasticity under pressure and suitable permeability in an intact feather would facilitate strong squeezing effect,helping feathers withstand larger aerodynamic forces to which they might be subjected during *** was revealed that the intact secondary feather is a compromise between strong lift generation and drag reduction,which has a great significance for the bird’s flight.

Acetabular cup version modelling and its clinical applying on plain radiograms

AIM To measure the sensitivity and specificity of the cup version assessment by using only anteroposterior hip and pelvis views, evaluate the incidence of inadequate cup version in patients with repeated dislocations after total hip arthroplasty(THA). METHODS Radiographic retrospective analysis of 2 groups of patients, with follow up of 6-60 mo, after undergoing primary THA. First group of 32 patients(20 female, 12 male) with unilateral THA(32 hips) required early revision arthroplasty for reasons of dislocation. The mean age and mode were 59(from 38 to 83) and 66 ages respectively. The average body mass index(BMI) was 24.2(from 17.7 to 36.3), mode 23.9. Second group was consisted of 164 patients(101 female, 63 male) without dislocations during the follow-up period(170 hips). Among them 6 patients required bilateral THA. The mean age was 60(from 38 to 84) and mode 59. BMI was 24.8(17.2-36.8), mode 25.2. Clinical significance of the cup anteversion sign was estimated with cross tabulation 2 × 2. RESULTS The value of the χ~2 yates was 10.668(P < 0.01).Sensitivity of SAI(sign of anteversion insufficiency) was 29%(95%CI: 9%-46%), and specificity was 92%(95%CI: 88%-96%). Relative risk of dislocation in patients with SAI was 3.4(95%CI: 1.8-6.3). CONCLUSION This method provides the surgeons with the ability to perform a reliable and simple qualitative assessment of the acetabular component version. It can be useful during patient examination with early loosening of the implant, dislocations, and impingement. Additionally, it can provide necessary information during planning of revision surgery, especially when considering question about cup replacement, although final assessment of the cup position should be done with a computed tomography scan.

Prehospital response to respiratory distress by the public ambulance system in a Ukrainian city

BACKGROUND: The capability of the public ambulance system in Ukraine to address urgent medical complaints in a prehospital environment is unknown. Evaluation using reliable sources of patient data is needed to provide insight into current treatments and outcomes. METHODS: We obtained access to de-identifi ed computer records from the emergency medical services(EMS) dispatch center in Poltava, a medium-sized city in central Ukraine. Covering a fi vemonth period, we retrieved data for urgent calls with a patient complaint of respiratory distress. We evaluated ambulance response and treatment times, field diagnoses, and patient disposition, and analyzed factors related to fatal outcomes. RESULTS: Over the f ive-month period of the study, 2,029 urgent calls for respiratory distress were made to the Poltava EMS dispatch center. A physician-led ambulance typically responded within 10 minutes. Seventy-seven percent of patients were treated and released, twenty percent were taken to hospital, and three percent died in the prehospital phase. On univariate analysis, age over 60 and altered mental status at the time of the call were strongly associated with a fatal outcome. CONCLUSION: The EMS dispatch center in a medium-sized city in Ukraine has adequate organizational infrastructure to ensure that a physician-led public ambulance responds rapidly to complaints of respiratory distress. That EMS system was able to manage most patients without requiring hospital admission. However, a prehospital fatality rate of three percent suggests that further research is warranted to determine training, equipment, or procedural needs of the public ambulance system to manage urgent medical conditions.

Although gradual, the changes in the weather patterns are also noticeable and impactful to architectural design. If the local microclimate is taken into account early in the conceptual stage of design, the longevity of the ultimate structure can be greatly enhanced, despite challenging environmental factors. Parametric designing enables to discover the optimal architectural shape based on specific weather data. The paper intends to investigate how this design approach, coupled with Computational Fluid Dynamics simulations, can be used to create a wind-induced architecture. Both the benefits and the limitations of this approach are explored in detail. The interaction between an architectural shape and wind flow is tested in a study called ‘FlowBrane’. The process of （1） designing a parametrically changeable geometry, （2） testing its behavior in the wind, and （3） evaluating the results allows looping back to the initial geometric design, continuing to improve the design and ultimately the performance of the architecture in the specific wind conditions of the chosen site. However, the need to test multiple geometries separately and to adjust the wind simulation for each test （and for every wind direction） remains a disadvantage that should be addressed in further research.
