Modeling the crop transpiration using an optimality-based approach

Evapotranspiration constitutes more than 80% of the long-term water balance in Northern China.In this area,crop transpiration due to large areas of agriculture and irrigation is responsible for the majority of evapotranspiration.A model for crop transpiration is therefore essential for estimating the agricultural water consumption and understanding its feedback to the environment.However,most existing hydrological models usually calculate transpiration by relying on parameter calibration against local observations,and do not take into account crop feedback to the ambient environment.This study presents an optimality-based ecohydrology model that couples an ecological hypothesis,the photosynthetic process,stomatal movement,water balance,root water uptake and crop senescence,with the aim of predicting crop characteristics,CO2 assimilation and water balance based only on given meteorological data.Field experiments were conducted in the Weishan Irrigation District of Northern China to evaluate performance of the model.Agreement between simulation and measurement was achieved for CO2 assimilation,evapotranspiration and soil moisture content.The vegetation optimality was proven valid for crops and the model was applicable for both C3 and C4 plants.Due to the simple scheme of the optimality-based approach as well as its capability for modeling dynamic interactions between crops and the water cycle without prior vegetation information,this methodology is potentially useful to couple with the distributed hydrological model for application at the watershed scale.

This review aims to identify in vivo studies investigating the potential of plant substances and their natural molecules in managing inflammatory bowel disease(IBD).Specifically,the objective is to examine the impact of these substances on interleukins and other key inflammatory signaling markers.Relevant articles published up to December 2022 were identified through a search of the PubMed,Scopus,Web of Science,and Embase databases.The search used keywords including“inflammatory bowel disease”,“medicinal plants”,“natural molecules”,“anti-inflammatory”,and“ulcerative colitis”,and identified 1,878 potentially relevant articles,of which 89 were included in this review after completion of the selection process.This study provides preclinical data on natural products(NPs)that can potentially treat IBD,including ulcerative colitis.The main actions of these NPs relate to their effects on nuclear factor kappa B(NF-κβ),the Janus kinase(JAK)/signal transducer and activator of transcription(STAT)signaling pathway,the regulation of T helper 17/regulatory T cells balance,and oxidative stress.The ability of these NPs to inhibit intestinal inflammation appears to be dependent on lowering levels of the pro-inflammatory cytokines tumor necrosis factor-alpha(TNF-α),interleukin(IL)-1β,and IL-17,via the Jun N-terminal kinase(JNK)1,NF-κβ-p65,and STAT3 pathways.In addition,NPs were shown to reduce oxidative stress and the severity of ulcerative colitis,as well as increase the activity of antioxidant enzymes.These actions suggest that NPs represent a promising treatment for IBD,and potentially have greater efficacy and safety than current treatments.

Shikimic acid is a hydroaromatic compound possessing critical biological properties,such as antibacterial and antiviral activity.This review mainly focused on shikimic acid and its derivatives.We first briefly introduced the sources of shikimic acid and its derivatives and discussed their biosynthesis.Several in vitro and in vivo studies indicate that shikimic acid and its derivatives exhibit diverse bioactivities,such as antioxidant,antiviral,anti-inflammatory,antibacterial,hypolipidemic,bone protective,skin protective,neuroprotective,and antidiabetic activities.We mainly focused on the related molecular mechanisms.Overall,the wide range of bioactivities of shikimic acid and its derivatives indicate that a more detailed exploration of their potential for the prevention and treatment of certain diseases is warranted.

Incidental adenocarcinoma in patients undergoing surgery for stricturing Crohn's disease

AIM To evaluate frequency and clinical course of incidental adenocarcinoma in patients with stricturing Crohn's disease(CD).METHODS In this study, consecutive patients, who were operated on for stricturing CD between 1997-2012, were included at an academic tertiary referral center. Demographic data and clinical course were obtained by an institutional database and individual chart review. Besides baseline characteristics, intraoperative findings and CD related history were also recorded. Colorectal cancer was classified and staged according to the Union for International Cancer Control(UICC).RESULTS During the study period 484 patients underwent resections due to stricturing CD. Incidental adenocarcinoma was histologically confirmed in 6(1.2%) patients(4 males, 2 females). Patients diagnosed with colorectal cancer had a median age of 43(27-66)years and a median history of CD of 16(7-36) years. Malignant lesions were found in the rectum(n = 4, 66.7%), descending colon(n = 1, 16.7%) and ileocolon(n = 1, 16.7%). According to the UICC classification two patients were stages as?Ⅰ(33.3%), whereas the other patients were classified as stage ⅡA(16.7%), stage ⅢB(16.7%), stage ⅢC(16.7%) and stage Ⅳ(16.7%), respectively. After a median follow-up of 2(0.03-8) years only 1 patient is still alive.CONCLUSION The frequency of incidental colorectal cancer in patients, who undergo surgery for stenotic CD, is low but associated with poor prognosis. However, surgeons need to be aware about the possibility of malignancy in stricturing CD, especially if localized in the rectum.

Successful management of therapy-refractory pseudoachalasia after Ivor Lewis esophagectomy by bypassing colonic pull-up:A case report

BACKGROUND Gastric pull-up after esophagectomy is still a demanding surgical procedure and associated with considerable morbidity such as anastomotic leaks,fistulas or stenoses.These complications are usually managed by endoscopy,but in extreme cases multidisciplinary management including reoperations may be necessary.Here,we report managing therapy-refractory pseudoachalasia after Ivor Lewis esophagectomy by bypassing colonic pull-up.CASE SUMMARY A 70-year-old male with dysphagia and regurgitation after esophagectomy with gastric pull-up reconstruction was transferred to our tertiary hospital.Since endoscopic approaches including balloon dilatation and stenting failed,retrosternal colonic pull-up with Roux-en-Y reconstruction was performed with no subsequent adverse events.CONCLUSION Secondary colonic pull-up is a demanding but successful surgical procedure in patients suffering from therapy-refractory complaints after esophagectomy with gastric pull-up reconstruction.

Synthesis and electrocatalytic applications of flower-like motifs and associated composites of nitrogen-enriched tungsten nitride(W2N3)

We have sought to improve the electrocatalytic performance of tungsten nitride through synthetic control over chemical composition and morphology.In particular,we have generated a thermodynamically unstable but catalytically promising nitrogen-rich phase of tungsten via a hydrothermal generation of a tungsten oxide intermediate and subsequent annealing in ammonia.The net product consisted of three-dimensional(3D)micron-scale flower-like motifs of W2N3;this architecture not only evinced high structural stability but also incorporated the favorable properties of constituent two-dimensional nanosheets.From a performance perspective,as-prepared 3D W2N3 demonstrated promising hydrogen evolution reaction(HER)activities,especially in an acidic environment with a measured overpotential value of−101 mV at a current density of 10 mA/cm^2.To further enhance the electrocatalytic activity,small amounts of precious metal nanoparticles(such as Pt and Au),consisting of variable sizes,were uniformly deposited onto the underlying 3D W2N3 motifs using a facile direct deposition method;these composites were applied towards the CO2 reduction reaction(CO2RR).A highlight of this series of experiments was that Au/W2N3 composites were found to be a much more active HER(as opposed to either a CO2RR or a methanol oxidation reaction(MOR))catalyst.

Managing esophagocutaneous fistula after secondary gastric pullup:A case report

BACKGROUND Gastric pull-up(GPU)procedures may be complicated by leaks,fistulas,or stenoses.These complications are usually managed by endoscopy,but in extreme cases multidisciplinary management including reoperation may be necessary.Here,we report a combined endoscopic and surgical approach to manage a failed secondary GPU procedure.CASE SUMMARY A 70-year-old male with treatment-refractory cervical esophagocutaneous fistula with stenotic remnant esophagus after secondary GPU was transferred to our tertiary hospital.Local and systemic infection originating from the infected fistula was resolved by endoscopy.Hence,elective esophageal reconstruction with freejejunal interposition was performed with no subsequent adverse events.CONCLUSION A multidisciplinary approach involving interventional endoscopists and surgeons successfully managed severe complications arising from a cervical esophagocutaneous fistula after GPU.Endoscopic treatment may have lowered the perioperative risk to promote primary wound healing after free-jejunal graft interposition.

A polymer-supported palladium-imidazole catalyst was used to catalyze the hydrogenation of various olefins under mild conditions. The rate of hydrogenation was studied. The effects of factors such as substrate concentration,catalyst concentration,partial pressure of hydrogen and temperature on initial rate of reaction of selected olefins were investigated. A mechanism for the reaction was proposed from the rate equation. The effects of the solvent and structure of the olefin on the rate of hydrogenation were investigated. The catalyst showed good reusability without any leaching of metal from the support. The homologous analog of the polymer-supported catalyst could not be used as catalyst for the hydrogenation of olefins in methanol because there was precipitation of the metal during reaction.

We describe the design and x-ray emission properties(temporal,spatial,and spectral)of Dry Pinch I,a portable X-pinch driver developed at Imperial College London.Dry Pinch I is a direct capacitor discharge device,30033003700 mm3 in size and∼50 kg in mass,that can be used as an external driver for x-ray diagnostics in high-energy-density physics experiments.Among key findings,the device is shown to reliably produce 1.1±0.3 ns long x-ray bursts that couple∼50 mJ of energy into photon energies from 1 to 10 keV.The average shot-to-shot jitter of these bursts is found to be 10±4.6 ns using a combination of x-ray and current diagnostics.The spatial extent of the x-ray hot spot from which the radiation emanates agrees with previously published results for X-pinches-suggesting a spot size of 10±6μm in the soft energy region(1–10 keV)and 190±100μm in the hard energy region(>10 keV).These characteristics mean that Dry Pinch I is ideally suited for use as a probe in experiments driven in the laboratory or at external facilities when more conventional sources of probing radiation are not available.At the same time,this is also the first detailed investigation of an X-pinch operating reliably at current rise rates of less than 1 kA/ns.
