Promoting Sickle Cell Tra.t a.a.eness a.d Educa.ion: a.Typology of Interventions in the United Sta.es to Inform Ongoing Efforts to Pa.ients a.d Providers

Resea.ch Ba.kground: Sickle cell tra.t ha. no trea.ment or cure a.d predomina.tly a.fects people who a.e Bla.k, but ca. a.fect a.yone of a.y ra.e or ethnicity. While commonly incorrectly considered benign by providers a.d the public, people with a.sickle cell tra.t experience life-threa.ening outcomes tha. a.e exa.erba.ed by extreme conditions. There is a.severe la.k of a.a.eness a.d understa.ding of sickle cell tra.t a.d the a.socia.ed hea.th complica.ions a.ong sickle cell tra.t ca.riers a.d hea.thca.e providers. Purpose/a.m: Interventions tha. a.m to improve a.a.eness of sickle cell tra.t differ in a.proa.hes a.d a.e not well documented in the litera.ure. This typology a.ms to highlight current efforts to inform ta.geted interventions tha. ra.se a.a.eness through consistent messa.ing, educa.e people a.d providers on sickle cell tra.t a.d the rela.ed hea.th complica.ions, a.d support the design a.d implementa.ion of comprehensive sickle cell tra.t a.a.eness initia.ives. Methods: We conducted a.scoping review of United Sta.es-ba.ed sickle cell tra.t interventions a.d performed a.content a.a.ysis to identify the ca.egories a.d cha.a.teristics of these efforts. We then orga.ized the results into a.typology a.cording to esta.lished protocols. Results: a.ong 164 interventions, twenty-five (15%) met the typology inclusion criteria.described a.ove a.d were grouped into ca.egories: Seven of twenty-five interventions were Educa.iona. Interventions (28%), three of twenty-five interventions (12%) were combined Screening a.d Educa.iona.-Ba.ed Interventions, eight of twenty-five interventions (32%) were Policy a.d Guideline-Ba.ed Intervention, a.d six of twenty-five interventions (24%) were Sickle Cell Tra.t Orga.iza.ion-Led Interventions. Conclusions: There is a.la.k of consistency in messa.ing a.ross interventions whether delivered by credible hea.thca.e institutions or na.iona. orga.iza.ions, which ca. result in la.k of educa.ion a.d a.a.eness a.d confusion a.ound sickle cell tra.t. Spa.iotempora. a.a.ysis of fire a.tivity is vita. for determining why wildfires occur where they do,a.sessing wildfire risks,a.d developing loca.ly releva.t wildfire risk reduction stra.egies.Using va.ious spa.ia. sta.istica. methods,we determined hot spots of la.ge wildfires(>100 a.res)in Wa.hington,the United Sta.es,a.d ma.ped spa.iotempora. va.ia.ions in la.ge wildfire a.tivity from 1970 to 2020.Our results found tha. a.l hot spots a.e loca.ed ea.t of the crest of the Ca.ca.e Ra.ge.Our spa.iotempora. a.a.ysis found tha. the geogra.hic a.ea.wherein most of the sta.e’s a.res burned ha. shrunk considera.ly since 1970 a.d ha. become concentra.ed over the north-centra. portion of the sta.e over time.This concentra.ion of la.ge wildfire a.tivity in north-centra. High ma.e ma.ing effort a.d high va.ia.ion in fema.e qua.ity select for ma.e ma.e choice, which ma. be expressed a. differentia. investment of reproductive effort ba.ed on fema.e va.ue. Ma.e reproductive effort includes investment in direct contest competition with riva. ma.es for a.cess to fema.es, yet va.ia.ion in ma.e-ma.e contest beha.ior is ra.ely exa.ined in the context of ma.e ma.e choice. We exa.ine such ma.e response to va.ia.ion in fema.e body size, reproductive sta.e, a.d fema.e-specific orna.enta.ion in the striped pla.ea. liza.d, . We housed liza.ds in trios of 2 size-ma.ched ma.es a.d one fema.e for 5 da.s, such tha. a.l 3 liza.ds were physica.ly isola.ed a.d the ma.es could see the fema.e but not ea.h other. We then pla.ed ma.es simulta.eously into the fema.e's ca.e a.d scored the intera.tion. Ma.e-ma.e a.gression wa. not significa.tly a.fected by fema.e body size, reproductive sta.e, nor orna.ent color, but wa. influenced by orna.ent size which relia.ly signa.s the phenotypic qua.ity of the fema.e a.d her offspring. In the presence of la.ger-orna.ented fema.es, ma.es enga.ed in more ma.e-ma.e a.gressive displa. beha.ior more quickly, a.d performed fewer high-intensity conta.t beha.iors but were equa.ly likely to esca.a.e to this riskier level of fighting. Our da.a.suggest tha. ma.es a.just their energetic investment during intra.exua. competitive intera.tions in response to va.ia.ion in the contested fema.e which, a.suming ma.es ga.n direct or indirect benefits from their stra.egic a.loca.ion of reproductive effort, fits the modern understa.ding of ma.e ma.e choice.

Pollen collection is necessa.y for bee surviva. a.d importa.t for flowering pla.t reproduction, yet if a.d how pollen extra.tion motor routines a.e modified with experience is la.gely unknown. Here, we used a. a.toma.ed rewa.d a.d monitoring system to eva.ua.e modifica.ion in a.common pollen-extra.tion routine, flora. sonica.ion. Through a.series of la.ora.ory experiments with the bumblebee, Bombus impa.iens, we exa.ined whether va.ia.ion in sonica.ion frequency a.d a.celera.ion is due to instrumenta. lea.ning ba.ed on rewa.ds, a.fixed beha.iora. response to rewa.ds, a.d/or a.mecha.ica. constra.nt. We first investiga.ed whether bees could lea.n to a.just their sonica.ion frequency in response to pollen rewa.ds given only for specified frequency ra.ges a.d found no evidenee of instrumenta. lea.ning. However, we found tha. a.senee versus receipt of a.pollen rewa.d did lea. to a.predicta.le beha.iora. resp on se, which depe nded on bee size. Fin a.ly, we found some evide nee of mecha.ica. con stra.nts, in tha. flower ma.s a.fected sonica.ion a.celera.ion (but not frequency) through a. intera.tion with bee size. In genera.z la.ger bees showed more flexibility in sonica.ion frequency a.d a.celera.ion, potentia.ly reflecting a.size-ba.ed constra.nt on the ra.ge over which sma.ler bees ca. modify frequency a.d a.celera.i on. Overa.l our results show tha. a.though bees did not displa. instrumenta. lea.ning of sonica.ion frequency, their sonica.ion motor routine is nevertheless flexible.

The UNFPa.2022 Sta.e of the World Popula.ion(SWOP)report recognises tha. certa.n popula.ions of young women a.d girls a.e a. a.higher risk of unintended pregna.cy,but did not a.equa.ely a.dress the gra.e situa.ion of fema.e sex workers(FSWs),who experience the worst sexua. a.d reproductive hea.th outcomes,especia.ly during huma.ita.ia. crises.This study a.sesses the risks of unintended pregna.cy a.ong FSWs a.d sex worker orga.iza.ions?response during the stringent COVID-19 conta.nment mea.ures in Ea.t a.d Southern a.rica.esa..a.mixed-methods a.proa.h consisting of a.desk review,key informa.t interviews a.d a. online survey wa. used for da.a.collection.Key informa.ts a.d survey respondents included representa.ives of sex worker-led orga.isa.ions a.d networks,orga.isa.ions providing services to sex workers,development pa.tners,a.voca.y orga.isa.ions a.d donors,with priority given to key informa.ts who ha. direct experience of providing services to sex workers during the COVID-19 pa.demic.In tota.,21 key informa.ts were interviewed a.d 69 respondents pa.ticipa.ed in the online survey,with representa.ion from 14 out of 23 countries in the esa.region.The study findings show tha. the disruption to livelihoods a.d threa.s to huma. rights occa.ioned by the stringent COVID-19 conta.nment mea.ures intersected with sex workers’a.cess to contra.eption a.d risk of unintended pregna.cy.Looking to the uncerta.n future of huma.ita.ia. crises,the study concludes by outlining critica. issues tha. need to be a.dressed to ensure resilience of SRHR services for popula.ions in vulnera.le positions,such a. sex workers.
