Organic aerosol molecular composition and gas–particle partitioning coefficients at a Mediterranean site(Corsica)

Molecular speciation of atmospheric organic matter was investigated during a short summer field campaign performed in a citrus fruit field in northern Corsica（June 2011）. Aimedat assessing the performance on the field of newly developed analytical protocols, this work focuses on the molecular composition of both gas and particulate phases and provides an insight into partitioning behavior of the semi-volatile oxygenated fraction. Limonene ozonolysis tracers were specifically searched for, according to gas chromatography–mass spectrometry（GC–MS） data previously recorded for smog chamber experiments. A screening of other oxygenated species present in the field atmosphere was also performed. About sixty polar molecules were positively or tentatively identified in gas and/or particle phases. These molecules comprise a wide range of branched and linear, mono and di-carbonyls（C_3–C7）,mono and di-carboxylic acids（C_3–C_18）, and compounds bearing up to three *** these compounds, some can be specifically attributed to limonene oxidation and others can be related to α- or β-pinene oxidation. This provides an original snapshot of the organic matter composition at a Mediterranean site in summer. Furthermore, for compounds identified and quantified in both gaseous and particulate phases, an experimental gas/particle partitioning coefficient was determined. Several volatile products, which are not expected in the particulate phase assuming thermodynamic equilibrium, were nonetheless present in significant concentrations. Hypotheses are proposed to explain these observations, such as the possible aerosol viscosity that could hinder the theoretical equilibrium to be rapidly reached.

3D finite element analysis of a two-surface wear model in fretting tests

This article aims at developing a computationally efficient framework to simulate the erosion of two contact surfaces in three-dimensional(3D),depending on the body *** framework involves finite element(FE)resolution of a fretting problem,wear computation via a non-local criterion including a wear distribution parameter(WDP),as well as updating of the geometry and automatic *** originality is based on the capability to capture the damage on each surface and obtain local and global results for a quantitative and qualitative *** simulations are carried out for two 3D contact specimens with different values of *** results highlight the importance of correctly modelling wear:One-surface wear model is sufficient from a global point of view(wear volume),or whenever the wear resistance for a body is much higher than that of another one,whereas a 3D two-surface wear model is essential to capturing local effects(contact pressure,wear footprint,etc.)related to the difference in wear resistance of the bodies.

Zwitterionic and mesoionic liquids:Molecular aggregation in 3-methylsydnone

Ionic liquids are green solvents with interesting properties:displaying low melting points and high boiling *** offer a new approach applicable in many ***,the presence of free ions can be a matter in some cases,*** the study of nucleophilic reactions,in electrochemistry,and in each situation where there is a competition between counter ions,as in micellization of ionic *** compounds having formal unit electrical charges of opposite sign,and the same physical properties than ionic liquids would be a nice alternative to these latter *** are two classes of chemical compounds having these characteristics:zwitterionic liquids(with no uncharged canonical representation) and mesoionic liquids(in which the negative and the positive charges are delocalized).In that last class we have chosen to work with 3-methylsydnone in order to examine,in this aprotic solvent,if it was possible to observe aggregation of surfactants in the same manner as in *** all kinds of surfactants studied(ionic,zwitterionic and mesoionic) we have been able to demonstrate the formation of direct micelles:hydrogen bonding is thus not mandatory for molecular *** of the behavior in water and in formamide showed that solvophobic interactions were qualitatively comparable but with a lower intensity.

Modelling the daily risk of Ebola in the presence and absence of a potential vaccine

Ebola virus d one of the deadliest viral diseases,with a mortality rate around 90%d damages the immune system and organs,with symptoms including episodic fever,chills,malaise and *** Recombinant Vesicular stomatitis Virus-based candidate vaccine(rVSV-ZEBOV)has demonstrated clinical efficacy against Ebola in ring-vaccination clinical *** order to evaluate the potential effect of this candidate vaccine,we developed risk equations for the daily risk of Ebola infection both currently and after *** risk equations account for the basic transmission probability of Ebola and the lowered risk due to various protection protocols:vaccination,hazmat suits,reduced contact with the infected living and dead *** space was sampled using Latin Hypercube Sampling,a statistical method for generating a near-random sample of parameter *** found that at a high transmission rate of Ebola(i.e.,if the transmission rate is greater than 90%),a large fraction of the population must be vaccinated(>80%)to achieve a 50%decrease in the daily risk of *** a vaccine is introduced,it must have at least 50%efficacy,and almost everyone in the affected areas must receive it to effectively control outbreaks of *** results indicate that a low-efficacy Ebola vaccine runs the risk of having vaccinated people be overconfident in a weak vaccine and hence the possibility that the vaccine could make the situation worse,unless the population can be sufficiently educated about the necessity for high vaccine uptake.
