An ethically guided preclinical device for phenotyping H_(2)production in laboratory rodents

Background:Dihydrogen(H_(2))is produced endogenously by the intestinal microbiota through the fermentation of diet *** the past few years,numer-ous studies have demonstrated the significant therapeutic potential of H_(2)in various pathophysiological contexts,making the characterization of its production in labora-tory species of major preclinical ***:This study proposes an innovative solution to accurately monitor H_(2)pro-duction in free-moving rodents while respecting animal welfare *** devel-oped device consisted of a wire rodent cage placed inside an airtight chamber in which the air quality was maintained,and the H_(2)concentration was continuously *** the airtightness and efficiency of the systems used to control and maintain air quality in the chamber were checked,tests were carried out on rats and mice with different metabolic phenotypes,over 12 min to 1-h experiments and repeatedly.H_(2)production rates(HPR)were obtained using an easy calculation algorithm based on a first-order moving ***:HPR in hyperphagic Zucker rats was found to be twice as high as in control Wistar rats,respectively,2.64 and 1.27 nmol.s^(−1)per *** addition,the ingestion of inulin,a dietary fiber,stimulated H_(2)production in *** were 0.46 nmol.s^(−1)for animals under control diet and 1.99 nmol.s^(−1)for animals under inulin ***:The proposed device coupled with our algorithm enables fine analysis of the metabolic phenotype of laboratory rats or mice with regard to their endogenous H_(2)production.

Toxicity is the totality of adverse effects, which can be functional and morphological lesions in a living organism, caused by a substance introduced in relatively high single doses or in small, repeated doses. The aim of this study was to assess the OECD-recommended acute oral toxicity and anti-inflammatory activity of ethanolic extract of Ficus umbellata leaves. Animals were given a single oral dose of 1000, 3000 and 5000 mg/Kg body weight (BW) of the extract. For the anti-inflammatory activity test, rats were given the ethanolic extract of F. umbellata leaves at doses of 100, 300 and 500 mg/Kg or aspirin® at a concentration of 100 mg/Kg PC orally, one hour before injection of 0.05 ml of 1% formalin under the plantar fascia of the rat’s right hind paw. Paw volume measurements were taken one, two and three hours after formalin injection, using an electronic caliper. After 14 days of observation, no deaths were observed in treated rats. The LD50 of ethanolic extract of Ficus umbellata leaf powder is greater than 5000 mg/Kg body weight. This extract has no significant effects on hematological parameters and on the main markers of nephrotoxicity and hepatotoxicity for a single dose of less than 5000 mg/Kg PC. It reduces formalin-induced edema. Evaluation of the percentage inhibition showed that the extract had greater anti-inflammatory activity at 3 hours after the start of the experiment. However, better inhibition of inflammatory oedema of the paw of rats treated with 500 mg/Kg was observed at 5 hours after the start of the experiment, with a percentage inhibition of 69.23 ± 1.02, compared with the reference group treated with aspirin® 100 mg/Kg, which showed an inhibition of 63.50 ± 0.98. These results show that F. umbellata leaves possess anti-inflammatory activity, which would justify their use in traditional African medicine to prevent or treat inflammation.

The objective of this multicentric study was to assess the prevalence of Chlamydia trachomatis, Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Mycoplasma génitalium and Trichomonas vaginalis infections in Brazzaville, in the Republic of Congo, using molecular methods. From January to December 2021, the sexually transmitted disease risk participants were recruited from six centers: The Association of Young HIV-Positive People of Congo, The Congolese Association for Family Welfare, The Association for Support to Vulnerable Groups, Talangaï hospital, Brazzaville university hospital (outpatient service) and the private clinic COGEMO (outpatient service). The real-time multiplex PCR was carried out to detect these pathogens. Each patient had at least one specimen (urine, urethral, anal and/or vaginal samples). The patients were considered infected when one of their samples was positive. 287 participants made of 227 women and 60 men were tested. The general prevalence of these infections was: Chlamydia trachomatis 2.79%, Neisseria gonorrhoeae 3.14%, Mycoplasma génitalium 3.45% and Trichomonas vaginalis 2.97. The prevalence rates according to sex were: C. trachomatis, M. génitalium, N. gonorrhea and T. vaginalis were 1.32%, 2.05%, 1.32% and 3.42% in women and 8.33%, 7.02%, 10% and 1.75% in men, respectively. Most infected patients were asymptomatic. Prevalence rates were higher in bisexual individuals, with the exception of T. vaginalis which showed higher prevalence in heterosexual patients. The bisexual and homosexual individuals represent a major public health problem in sexually active young adults, particularly among men having sex with men. These sexually transmitted infections are mainly asymptomatic, their diagnosis and management remain difficult in developing countries.

Nickel levels in arthropods associated with Ni hyperaccumulator plants from an ultramafic site in New Caledonia

Arthropods （mainly insects） were collected from a forest site that contained at least six species of Ni hyperaccumulators. Whole body Ni analysis was performed for 12 arthropod taxa, two of which were studied at different life cycle stages. We found two Nitolerant insects. The pentatomid heteropteran Utana viridipuncta, feeding on fruits of the Ni hyperaccumulator Hybanthus austrocaledonicus, contained a mean of 2 600 μg Ni/g in nymphs and 750μg Ni/g in adults. The tephritid fly Bactrocera psidii, feeding on pulp of Sebertia acuminata fruits that contained 6 900μg Ni/g, contained 420μg Ni/g as larvae that had evacuated their guts and significantly less （65μg Ni/g） as adults. European honeybees （Apis mellifera） visiting flowers of the Ni hyperaccumulator H. austrocaledonicus contained significantly more Ni （8-fold more） than those collected from flowers of Myodocarpus fraxinifolius, a non-hyperaccumulator. Our results show that some insects feed on Ni hyperaccumulator plants and that their feeding mobilizes Ni into local food webs.

Pancreatic head cancer in patients with chronicpancreatitis

BACKGROUND: Chronic pancreatitis (CP) is a risk factor of pancreatic adenocarcinoma (PA). The discovery of a pancreatic head lesion in CP frequently leads to a pancreaticoduo denectomy (PD) which preceded by a multidisciplinary meeting(MM). The aim of this study was to evaluate the relevance between this indication of PD and the definitive pathological ***: Between 2000 and 2010, all patients with CP who underwent PD for suspicion of PA without any histological proof were retrospectively analyzed. The operative decision has always been made at an MM. The definitive pathological finding was retrospectively confronted with the decision made at an MM, and patients were classified in two groups according to this concordance (group 1) or not (group 2). Clinical and biological parameters were analyzed, preoperative imaging were reread and confronted to pathological findings in order to identify predictive factors of malignant ***: During the study period, five of 18 (group 1) patients with CP had PD were histologically confirmed to have PA, and the other 13 (group 2) did not have PA. The median age was52.5 ±8.2 years (gender ratio 3.5). The main symptoms were pain (94.4%) and weight loss (72.2%). There was no patient’s death. Six (33.3%) patients had a major complication (ClavienDindo classification ≥3). There was no statistical difference in clinical and biological parameters between the two groups. The rereading of imaging data could not detect efficiently all patients with ***: Our results confirmed the difficulty in detecting malignant transformation in patients with CP before surgery and therefore an elevated rate of unnecessary PD was found. A uniform imaging protocol is necessary to avoid PD as a less invasive treatment could be proposed.

本文主要研究插电式混合动力船舶及其航行性能,这类船的主要能源是光伏系统和由电池和超级电容器组成的混合储能系统。本研究以玛莎女王一号”(Masha Queen I)油轮作为研究对象,在MATLAB/Simulink工作环境下开发了该船的能耗模型,利用其特性来模拟插电式混合动力推进系统,并以大连港到烟台港的过程作为航线分析其航行性能,来计算该航线下“玛莎女王一号”油轮所耗的燃料以及其二氧化碳排放量的问题。该船舶产生的二氧化碳排放量的能效设计指数(EEDI)的计算表明:“玛莎女王一号”所产生的二氧化碳排放量和所消耗的燃料都非常高,在这种情况下,插电式混合推进系统可以视为一种减少燃料消耗以及排放的解决方案本。文对这种复杂的插电式混合动力推进系统进行了模拟,所获得的结果表明,本研究开发的插电式混合动力推进系统的模型可以很好地响应本文中提出的各种目标,证明了将该船舶的推进系统变为插电式混合动力推进的系统是可行的。该模型能够预测船舶的性能;不仅包括螺旋桨模型,发动机模型,储能系统模型,光伏模型和电动机模型等多种子模型;而且考虑到了多种操作模式(启动,正常驾驶和强加速,制动,蓄电池/超级电容器的充放电)的机械和电气系统;模型中船舶的动态特性(加速度,速度)与现实情况非常接近。通过本文研究模型的结果,可令玛莎女王一号”轮的二氧化碳的排放量以及其燃料消耗显著降低。此外,本研究中所提出的管理系统能够对能源进行无需人工干预的高效管理。本文建立的模型显示出了MATLAB/Simulink软件的工具在模拟复杂的机电系统时的适用性。该系统提供了对船舶产生的排放物的有价值的预测,可用于对海洋环境的保护。最后,本文将存储系统(电池/超级电容器)模型化,通过存储足够的能量来辅助船舶推进,在节能方面提供了不少优势。

Impact of fabrication methods on binder distribution and charge transport in composite cathodes of all-solid-state batteries

The manufacturing process of all-solid-state batteries necessitates the use of polymer ***,these binders,being ionic insulators by nature,can adversely affect charge transport within composite cathodes,thereby impacting the rate performance of the *** this work,we aim to investigate the impact of fabrication methods,specifically the solvent-free dry process versus the slurry-cast wet process,on binder distribution and charge transport in composite cathodes of solid-state *** the dry process,the binder forms a fibrous network,while the wet process results in binder coverage on the surface of cathode active *** difference in microstructure leads to a notable 20-fold increase in ionic conductivity in the dry-processed ***,the cells processed via the dry method exhibit higher capacity retention of 89%and 83%at C/3 and C/2 rates,respectively,in comparison to 68%and 58%for the wet-processed cells at the same *** findings provide valuable insights into the influence of fabrication methods on binder distribution and charge transport,contributing to a better understanding of the binder’s role in manufacturing of all-solid-state batteries.

The Impact of Automation in Painting Furniture Parts

Technology and Woodwork industries have been going through a phase of perfection over a period of hundred years, up until today, the wood work traditions are still exist and improving with the help of modern technology. Looking at history and current studies with regards to production of furniture, many factories are producing millions of chairs for entire continents and to maintain the market lead position requires a lot of human dedication and intelligent investments in technology. Using automation in painting means to automatically control the process including industrial machines like robots, conveyors and others which save time, money and also reduce human efforts. Most automation companies are specialized in industrial automation, industrial robots, communications, electronics, and software for developing complex projects to automate desirable task by integrating robots. This study is purposefully conducted to shed more light on the benefits or impacts of automation in painting furniture parts. One of the benefits that most of companies gain from automating the painting process with robots is the productivity growth. The recruitment process for specialized personnel in the painting processes has also been greatly simplified due to the fact that the robots have taken over the difficult’ tasks and protection from areas with high risk inhalation of harmful substances is assured. In this research, Automation is shown to be efficient and effective in the painting system by reviewing different studies. Automated dyeing processes in factories have made progress due to the successful results achieved by automated painting robots. In that regard, the impact of automation in painting furniture parts is evident in the production of fitments that are in almost every home through the solutions offered by automation to the consumer.
