Utilization of Urine for Cultivation of Selected Vegetable Crops in Backyard “Peeponics”

This study evaluated the use of urine for soilless cultivation (as Peeponics) of Amaranthus viridis and Corchorus olitorius vegetables. This is a laboratory-based experiment involving optimization of amount of urine and dilution required for optimal growth of the test plants. Based on laboratory results, the experiments were scaled up. About 50 L of raw urine was collected from a male postgraduate student’s hall of residence, University of Ibadan, Ibadan, Nigeria. Water from Awba Dam, a natural lake within University of Ibadan, was used as the control. Viable seeds of Amaranthus viridis and Corchorus olitorius were collected from Department of Agronomy, University of Ibadan, and germinated in a nursery for 10 days before transplanting. The raw urine was diluted with varying amount of water in the ratio 1:1 through 1:50. Nutrients in urine media (nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium) and biomass indicators of plant growth (height, weight, number of leaves and leaf area) were determined using standard procedures. Urine dilution ratios below 1:25 did not support the experimental plants growth within a week. Plant height (cm), stem girth (cm), number of leaves (sheets) and leaf area (cm2) of Amaranthus viridis and Corchorus olitorius cultivated on Urine Dilution Ratio (UDR) 1:35 and 1:45 were higher at the end of week 3 compared to other dilutions and control. Percentage reduction of nutrients (NPK) in the media of Amaranthus viridis cultivated on UDR 1:45 was several folds higher (N = 59.9%, P = 100%, K = 55.3%) compared to that of UDR 1:35 (N = 38.5%, P = 49.1%, K = 37.6%). In the control water, the nutrients were totally removed during the experimental period. Growth of Corchorus olitorius cultivated on both UDR 1:35 and 1:45, was significantly higher at the end of week 6. A significant negative correlation was observed between Corchorus olitorius plant height and Phosphorus (r = -0.0418;p < 0.05) removal in the media. Polymicrobial Keratitis—Importance of Detecting and Treating More Than One Organism

Corneal ulcers may become non-healing if inappropriately managed. Empirically giving broad spectrum antibiotics or prescription of a “cocktail” of topical antibacterial, antifungal and antiviral medication may only add to drug toxicity and drug resistance. We present a series of four cases of microbial keratitis which are complicated due to presence of more than one causative organism. Microbiological work-up revealed Proteus species and fungal hyphae in smears only in the first case, atypical Mycobacteria and Staphyloccocus species in the second case, Moraxella and Streptococcus viridans in the third case and Aspergillus flavus and Nocardia species in the fourth case. Authors would like to emphasize the need for laboratory support in the treatment of corneal ulcers and importance of proper management of this sight threatening disease.

Synthesis and Characterization of Copper Substituted Nickel Nano-Ferrites by Citrate-Gel Technique

Mixed Copper substituted Nickel nano-ferrites having the chemical formula Ni1-xCuxFe2O4 (where x = 0, 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8, 0.9 and 1.0) were synthesized by citrate gel technique. The crystal structure characterization and morphology were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). An elemental composition of the samples were studied by energy dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDS). Lattice parameter, X-ray density, Volume of the Unit Cell and The values of the hopping length for octahedral (dB) and tetrahedral (dA) sites were calculated. The observed results can be explained on the basis of composition.

Synthesis of Multifunctionalised 2-Substituted Benzimidazoles Using Copper (II) Hydroxide as Efficient Solid Catalyst

Here we demonstrate the synthesis of multifunctionalised benzimidazoles through the coupling of o-phenylenediamine with aldehydes by using Copper (II) hydroxide as an efficient solid catalyst in methanol at room temperature. The Copper (II) hydroxide solid catalyst gave better yields (80%-99%) in short reaction time (4-8 h). These commercially available cheap catalysts are more active than many reported expensive heterogeneous catalysts. Using the Copper hydroxide fresh catalyst, the yield of product 3a was 98%, while the recovered catalyst in the three subsequent cycles gave the yield of 94%, 90% and 88% respectively.

The tremendous and consistent increase in the volume and heterogeneity of traffic has resulted in major innovations in the telecommunication *** regard to the optical networks,existing studies have shown that by adopting a mixed line rate(MLR)strategy,the wavelength division multiplexed optical networks can cost-effectively respond to the diverse variety of traffic requirements which have heterogeneous service *** existing studies which focus on various MLR network issues by considering deployment of the standard single mode fiber only within the network,in the current work,we investigate the signal quality deterioration due to the combined effects of dominant physical layer impairments for an MLR optical network conforming to the various ITU-T compliant fibers and also considering the optical frequency grid based on ITU-T Recommendation *** main aim of our current study is to identify,for a given fiber,the modulation format configuration which provides the highest *** conduct extensive simulations on the considered MLR system using the obtained optimum channel spacing values between the single and mixed line *** results show that the existence of 10 Gbit/s line rate has a detrimental effect on the 40 Gbit/s and/or 100 Gbit/s line rate;however,the 40 Gbit/s and/or 100 Gbit/s line rate’s effect on a 10 Gbit/s line rate is not so detrimental,as well as between the similar line ***,our results clearly show that choice of the line rate of both,the central channel and its adjacent channels,has a major effect on the MLR network performance.

为了提高以明胶为稳定剂分散聚合制备的聚丙烯酰胺"水包水"(W/W型PAM)乳液的絮凝性能,首先,采用阳离子单体甲基丙烯酰氧乙基三甲基氯化铵(methacrylatoethyl trimethyl ammonium chloride, DMC)对钠基蒙脱土(sodium-montmorillonite, Na–MMT)进行插层改性制备有机蒙脱土(organic montmorillonite, OMMT),通过X射线衍射(X-ray diffraction, XRD)测试得到插层改性后蒙脱土的层间距由1.25 nm增加至1.43 nm,说明DMC单体已经成功插层进入蒙脱土片层。然后,将OMMT引入以明胶为稳定剂的W/W型PAM乳液的体系中,以制备W/W型PAM–MMT乳液。通过透射电镜(transmission electron microscope, TEM)乳液微观形貌进行观察,得到乳液结构是由以蒙脱土颗粒为"交联点"的聚丙烯酰胺高分子网络和W/W型PAM乳液的混合体。研究了OMMT用量、明胶浓度、体系pH值以及阳离子单体DMC添加比例对合成W/W型PAM–MMT乳液性能的影响规律。结果显示:在适宜条件下合成的乳液均具有较好的储存稳定性和在水中的再分散性。乳液的表观黏度和絮凝性能都与OMMT和明胶用量呈正相关性;当pH值在明胶等电点(isoelectric point,IEP)时,得到的乳液的表观黏度最低,絮凝效果最好;随着DMC单体用量比例增大,乳液表观黏度减小,高岭土悬浮液的絮凝效果先增大后减小。
