BACKGROUND： Proliferation of hepatic stellate cells （HSCs） plays a pivotal role in the progression of liver fibrosis conse- quent to chronic liver injury. Silibinin, a flavonoid compound, has been shown to possess anti-fibrogenic effects in animal models of liver fibrosis. This was attributed to an inhibition of cell proliferation of activated HSCs. The present study was to gain insight into the molecular pathways involved in silibinin anti-fibrogenic effect. METHODS： The study was conducted on LX-2 human stellate cells treated with three concentrations of silibinin （10, 50 and 100 μmol/L） for 24 and 96 hours. At the end of the treatment cell viability and proliferation were evaluated. Protein expression of p27, p21, p53, Akt and phosphorylated-Akt was evaluated by Western blotting analysis and Ki-67 protein expression was by immunocytochemistry. Sirtuin activity was evaluated by chemiluminescence based assay. RESULTS： Silibinin inhibits LX-2 cell proliferation in doseand time-dependent manner; we showed that silibinin upregulated the protein expressions of p27 and p53. Such regulation was correlated to an inhibition of both downstream Akt and phosphorylated-Akt protein signaling and Ki-67 protein expression. Sirtuin activity also was correlated to silibinin- inhibited proliferation of LX-2 cells. CONCLUSION： The anti-proliferative effect of silibinin on LX-2 human steUate cells is via the inhibition of the expres- sions of various cell cycle targets including p27, Akt and sir- tuin signaling.

Fluorescent Chemosensing Properties of New Isoindoline Based-Receptors towards F-and Cu2+Ions

Two simple colorimetric and fluorescent anion chemosensors based on amide moieties, 4-nitro-N-[(1,3-dioxoisoindolin-2yl)benzamide (1), 3,5-dinitro-N-[(1,3-dioxoisoindolin-2yl)benzamide (2) have been synthesized and characterized. Comparing with other anions studied, the UV-visible absorption spectrum in DMSO shows significant response toward F- ion with high selectivity, and meanwhile color change is observed from colorless to pink and violet for 1 and 2 respectively in the presence of tetrabutylammonium fluoride (TBAF) (5 × 10-3 M). Moreover, F--induced color changes remain the same even in the large excess of Cl- , Br- and I-. In addition, the 1H NMR spectrum titration in DMSO-d6 shows deprotonation of the receptors 1 and 2 in the presence of basic F- ion. In particular, addition of F- to the receptors 1 and 2 resulted in an enhancement in fluorescence intensity at 770 nm. Both receptors 1 and 2 exhibit a fluorescent emission enhancement when addition of Zn2+, Ni2+, Co2+, Cu2+ and Mn2+ metal ions. The fluorescent enhancement values for the receptor 1 are 2.29 (Cu2+), 1.85 (Ni2+), 1.37 (Co2+), 1.27 (Mn2+), 1.25 (Zn2+) and for 2, 2.57 (Cu2+), 1.66 (Ni2+), 1.36 (Co2+), 1.15 (Mn2+), 1.09 (Zn2+). The selectivity of Cu2+ is higher for 1 and 2 than other metal ions such as Zn2+, Ni2+, Co2+ and Mn2+.

Objective:To evaluate the hepatoprotective potential of Hepax,a polyherbal formulation,against three experimentally induced hepatotoxicity models in ***:Hepatoprotective activity of Hepax was studied against three experimentally induced hepatotoxicity models,namely, carbon tetrachloride(CCl_4),paracetamol and thiocetamide induced hepatotoxicity in rats. Results:Administration of hepatotoxins(CCl_4,paracetamol and thiocetamide) showed significant morphological,biochemical and histological deteriorations in the liver of experimental animals. Pretreatment with Hepax had significant protection against hepatic damage by maintaining the morphological parameters(liver weight and liver weight to organ weight ratio) within normal range and normalizing the elevated levels of biochemical parameters(SGPT,SCOT,ALP and total bilirubin),which were evidently showed in histopathological ***:The Hepax has highly significant hepatoprotective effect at 100 and 200 mg/kg,*** the liver of all the three experimental animal models.

Cymbopogon citratus(lemon grass)is commonly used in traditional folk *** essential oil extracted from *** has been reported as a potential anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory *** study has been designed to explore the protective effect of ***(lemon grass)against modified LDL(OxLDL and H2O2 LDL)induced cytotoxicity in Peripheral Blood Mononuclear Cells(PBMC).The essential oil extracted from ***(EOC)was subjected to FT-IR spectroscopic analysis for the identification of functional *** vitro antioxidant assays were carried out to assess the electron donating capability of EOC as compared with a known standard L-ascorbic *** cytoprotective effects of EOC were determined in PBMC induced with modified *** obtained from FT-IR analysis showed the presence of functional groups in EOC such as H-bonded,O-H stretching,N-H stretching,aldehyde-C-H stretching,aldehyde/ketone-C=O stretching,-C=C-stretching,-CH_(3) bending,-C-H in plane *** has greater antioxidant property when compared with the standard L-ascorbic *** at all test concentrations demonstrated free radical scavenging activity and cytoprotective effect when challenged against modified LDL in *** above results show EOC as a promising antioxidant and cytoprotective agent.

This paper presents a fuzzy logic based three phase four wire four-leg shunt active power filter to suppress harmonic currents. Modified instantaneous p-q theory is adopted for calculating the compensating current. Fuzzy-adaptive hysteresis band technique is applied for the current control to derive the switching signals for the voltage source inverter. A fuzzy logic controller is developed to control the voltage of the DC capacitor. Computer simulations are carried out on a sample power system to demonstrate the suitability of the proposed control strategy, for harmonic reduction under three different conditions namely, ideal, unbalance, unbalance and distorted source voltage conditions. The proposed control strategy is found to be effective to reduce the harmonics and compensate reactive power and neutral current and balance load currents under ideal and non-ideal source voltage conditions.

Generally, approaches of coastal issues are sectoral basis and solutions have been formed in adhoc fashions which are not long lasting. Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM) is conceived as a holistic management tool working across sectoral, disciplinary, and institutional boundaries. ICZM planning is a continuous process to achieve the goals and objectives by using alternative decisions. ICZM plan is providing boundary conditions for limitation, negotiation and implementation. Planning for coastal management is essentially requires integration of resources, uses, issues, and tools for achieving the management objectives. The ultimate goal of ICZM is to improve the quality of life of human communities. Coastal area management needs integrated, interdisciplinary and multi-sectoral approaches for sustainable utilization of resources, which is the fundamental objective of the resource planners and managers. Methodology for ICZM planning is differing in relation to the regional culture, society, economics, politics, nature, technology, scientific, human behavior, etc. Planning for coastal management is very easy by following the methodology or framework developed for the planning process. A case study of ICZM Plan for Andaman has been prepared by using the participatory methodology, which is the source of consensus for all stakeholders of the Andaman Islands. The tasks of ICZM Plan preparation for Andaman Islands includes, knowledgebase development, selection of ICZM plan preparation methodologies, conflict identification, risk analysis, cost benefit analysis, strategic and action plans, recommendations and institutional changes. This ICZM methodology could be used for comparing and understanding the boundary conditions of union or federal developing nations towards comparative planning.

This paper demonstrates the approximate analytical solution to a non-linear singular two-point boundary-value problem which describes oxygen diffusion in a planar cell. The model is based on diffusion equation containing a non-linear term related to Michaelis-Menten kinetics of enzymatic reaction. Approximate analytical expression of concentration of oxygen is derived using new Homotopy perturbation method for various boundary conditions. The validity of the obtained solutions is verified by the numerical results.

A Comparative Study of ESTs Induced under Drought and Salinity Stress in Hyacinth Bean (Lablab purpureus)

Abiotic stressors like drought and salinity are major causes for loss of agricultural productivity. Comparison of expressed sesquence tags (ESTs) under different abiotic stresses provides insight into underlying mechanism of stress response, and candidate genes to improve tolerance to abiotic and biotic stresses via breading and transgenic methods. In order to identify and compare stress-specific ESTs from drought and salinity stressed Hyacinth Bean, ten days old seedlings were subjected to respective stresses and RNA was extracted from control and stressed leaves for EST identification. 31 and 12 ESTs, respectively, were characterized from leaves of drought and salinity stressed seedlings of Hyacinth Bean, Lablab purpureus by differential display RT-PCR using identical combinations of 48 primers and validated using quantitative RT-PCR. Relative fold expression was higher under salt stress than drought stress. Whereas 19 EST overexpressed under drought, 12 EST were down regulated. Of the 12 EST under salinity, 9 EST were downregulated and 3 EST upregulated. Putative functions predicted from sequence homology indicated that 11 drought specific EST corresponded to metabolic functions, and 4 of them corresponded to transcription regulation. Under salinity, 4 and 2 EST, respectively, corresponded to metabolic and RNA associated functions. Under both stresses, there were ESTs associated with unknown functions, whose characterization may throw light on the regulatory mechanism. Differing number of ESTs differentially expressed under drought and salt stress, and their predicted functionalities, suggested distinct set of response genes involved under these two stresses, despite a good number of physiological players being common. AIM: The present study was aimed at evaluating the antiulcer activity of the polyherbal formulation (PHF) containing the leaf extracts of Moringa oleifera, Raphinus sativus, and Amaranthus tricolor in rats. METHODS: The antiulcer activity of the polyherbal formulation (PHF) was evaluated using different models of gastric ulcers: ethanol-induced, indomethacin-induced and ischemia reperfusion-induced gastric ulcers. Efficacy was assessed by determining the ulcer index. RESULTS: Administration of the polyherbal formulation (150mg·kg-1 , p.o.) offered significant protection against indomethacin-induced, ethanol-induced, and ischemic reperfusion-induced ulcer models when compared to the control group. CONCLUSION: PHF, containing leaf extracts of Moringa oleifera, Raphinus sativus, and Amaranthus tricolor, was found to possess antiulcer properties in three experimental animal models of gastric ulcers, and these findings suggest that the significant gastroprotective activity could be mediated by its antioxidant activity.
