S100 family proteins are calcium-binding proteins, some of which have been shown to have intracellular and extracellular functions associated with inflammation. The serum concentration of S100A12 has been reported to increase in the acute phase of Kawasaki disease. The purpose of this study was to evaluate leukocyte gene expressions of S100 family proteins in the acute phase of Kawasaki disease. Ten paired blood samples were obtained from ten patients with Kawasaki disease in the acute phase and in the convalescent phase. We examined leukocyte expression levels of 18 S100 genes in the acute phase compared with those in the convalescent phase by using quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction. Significantly elevated expression of seven S100 genes (S100A6, A8, A9, A11, A12, S100P, and S100Z) was observed in the acute phase. Conclusion:Of the upregulated S100 genes, calgranulin members of S100 genes (S100A8, S100A9, and S100A12) were most highly expressed in the acute phase. Only one S100 gene, the S100A13 gene, exhibited a significantly decreased expression level in the acute phase.

A high angular resolution near-infrared image that shows the intensity of polarization for the GG Tau A binary system was obtained with the Subaru Telescope. The image shows a circumbinary disk scattering the light from the central binary. The azimuthal profile of the intensity of polarization for the circumbinary disk is roughly reproduced by a simple disk model with the Henyey-Greenstein phase function and the rayleigh function, indicating there are small dust grains at the surface of the disk. Combined with a previous observation of the circumbinary disk, our image indicates that the gap structure in the circumbinary disk orbits counterclockwise, but material in the disk orbits clockwise. We propose that there is a shadow caused by material located between the central binary and the circumbinary disk. The separations and position angles of the stellar components of the binary in the past 20 yr are consistent with the binary orbit with a = 33.4 AU and e = 0.34.

Ectopic hamartomatous thymoma(EHT )is a rare benign tumor. We present a case of EHT, which was seen as subcutaneous mass on the left supraclavicular area in a 19-year-old man. The tumor consisted of spindle cells, epithelial cells, adipose cells, and a small amount of lymphocytes, as described previously. Immunohistochemically, spindle cells were positive for keratin, a-smooth muscle actin, CD34 and vimentin, but negative for desmin and S- 100 protein. Lymphocytes were positive for CD45rO but negative for CD20, CD1a, and CD99. Approximately, 5% of cells were positive for MIB-1 and no cells stained for p53 and bcl-2. recognition of EHT is important and needs to be differentiated from high-grade sarcomas such as synovial sarcoma or glandular malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor.
