Repetitiveness of the oral glucose tolerance test in children and adolescents

BACKGROUND Data regarding the most suitable diagnostic method for the diagnosis of glucose impairment in asymptomatic children and adolescents are ***,limited data are available on the reproducibility of the oral glucose tolerance test(OGTT)in children and adolescents who are obese(OB).AIM To investigate the usefulness of the OGTT as a screening method for glucose dysregulation in children and *** Eighty-one children and adolescents,41 females,either overweight(OW),OB or normal weight(NW)but with a strong positive family history of type 2 diabetes mellitus(T2DM),were enrolled in the present observational study from the Outpatient Clinic of Paediatric Endocrinology of the University Hospital of Patras in *** or two 3-h OGTTs were performed and glucose,insulin and Cpeptide concentrations were measured at several time points(t=0 min,t=15 min,t=30 min,t=60 min,t=90 min,t=120 min,t=180 min).RESULTS Good repetitiveness was observed in the OGTT response with regard to T2DM,while low repetitiveness was noted in the OGTT response with regard to impaired glucose tolerance(IGT)and no repetitiveness with regard to impaired fasting glucose(IFG).In addition,no concordance was observed between IFG and *** the 1st and 2nd OGTTs,no significant difference was found in the glucose concentrations between NW,OW and OB patients,whereas insulin and C-peptide concentrations were higher in OW and OB compared to NW patients at several time points during the ***,OW and OB patients showed a worsening insulin and C-peptide response during the 2nd OGTT as compared to the 1st *** In mild or moderate disorders of glucose metabolism,such as IFG and IGT,a diagnosis may not be reached using only one OGTT,and a second test or additional investigations may be *** glucose metabolism is profoundly impaired,as in T2DM,one OGTT is probably more reliable and adequate for establishing the *** weight and/or a positiv

Retinal capillary plexus in Parkinson’s disease using optical coherence tomography angiography

Inverse Electromagnetic Scattering by a Penetrable Chiral Object

We consider the inverse electromagnetic scattering problem of determining the shape of a perfectly conducting core inside a penetrable chiral body. We prove the well-posedness of the corresponding direct scattering problem by the variational method. We focus on a uniqueness result for the inverse scattering problem that is under what conditions an obstacle can be identified by the knowledge of the electric far-field pattern corresponding to all time-harmonic incident planes waves with a fixed wave number. To this end, we establish a chiral mixed reciprocity relation that connects the electric far-field pattern of a spherical wave with the scattered field of a plane wave.

A RIEMANN-HILBERT PROBLEM IN A RIEMANN SURFACE

One of the inspirations behind Peter Lax＇s interest in dispersive integrable systems, as the small dispersion parameter goes to zero, comes from systems of ODEs discretizing 1-dimensional compressible gas dynamics [17]. For example, an understanding of the asymptotic behavior of the Toda lattice in different regimes has been able to shed light on some of von Neumann＇s conjectures concerning the validity of the approximation of PDEs by dispersive systems of ODEs. Back in the 1990s several authors have worked on the long time asymptotics of the Toda lattice [2, 7, 8, 19]. Initially the method used was the method of Lax and Levermore [16], reducing the asymptotic problem to the solution of a minimization problem with constraints （an ＂equilibrium measure＂ problem）. Later, it was found that the asyraptotic method of Deift and Zhou （analysis of the associated Riemann-Hilbert factorization problem in the complex plane） could apply to previously intractable problems and also produce more detailed information. Recently, together with Gerald Teschl, we have revisited the Toda lattice; instead of solu- tions in a constant or steplike constant background that were considered in the 1990s we have been able to study solutions in a periodic background. Two features are worth noting here. First, the associated Riemann-Hilbert factorization problem naturally lies in a hyperelliptic Riemann surface. We thus generalize the Deift- Zhou ＂nonlinear stationary phase method＂ to surfaces of nonzero genus. Second, we illustrate the important fact that very often even when applying the powerful Riemann-Hilbert method, a Lax-Levermore problem is still underlying and understanding it is crucial in the analysis and the proofs of the Deift-Zhou method!

Enhanced Biogas Production from the Anaerobic Batch Treatment of Banana Peels

Waste disposal management and the energy crisis are important challenges facing most *** fruit-processing industry generates daily several tons of wastes,of which the major share comes from banana *** digestion(AD)technology has been applied to the treatment of wastewater,animal slurry,food waste,and agricultural residues,with the primary goals of energy production and waste *** study examines the effect of organic loading(OL)and cow manure(CM)addition on AD performance when treating banana peel waste(BPW).The maximum daily biogas production rates of banana peels(BPs)with a CM content of 10%,20%,and 30%at 18 and 22 g of volatile solids(gvs)per liter were 50.20,48.66,and 62.78 mL (gvs.d)^-1 and 40.49,29.57,and 46.54 mL (gvs.d)^-1,***,the daily biogas yield showed no clear interdependence with OL or CM *** addition,a kinetic analysis using first-order and cone models showed that the kinetic parameters can be influenced by the process parameters.

Polycystic ovary syndrome: Pathways and mechanisms for possible increased susceptibility to COVID-19

In 75%of women with polycystic ovary syndrome(PCOS),insulin action is *** obesity,visceral adipose tissue becomes dysfunctional:Chronic inflammation is favored over storage,contributing to the development of metabolic ***,metabolic syndrome(MetSy)and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLD)apparently share common pathogenic factors;these include abdominal adiposity,excess body weight and insulin *** in the gut microbiome have been noted in women with PCOS compared to controls;these may lead to deterioration of the intestinal barrier,increased gut mucosal permeability and immune system activation,hyperinsulinemia and glucose intolerance,which hamper normal ovarian function and follicular development(all being hallmarks of PCOS).It has been proposed that PCOS may entail higher susceptibility to coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)via its associated comorbidities(NAFLD,obesity,MetSy and alterations in the gut microbiome).Studies have found an association between acute respiratory distress syndrome(seen in severe cases of COVID-19)and the intestinal ***,apparently,severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2(SARS-CoV-2)can gain entry to the gastrointestinal tract via locally-expressed angiotensin converting enzyme type 2 *** body weight is associated with more severe COVID-19 and increased *** robust links between SARS-CoV-2 infection and PCOS/NAFLD/gut microbiome/metabolic consequences are yet to be confirmed,it seems that strategies for adapting the intestinal microbiome could help reduce the severity of COVID-19 in women with PCOS with or without NAFLD,MetSy or obesity.

A Two-folded Impact Analysis of Schema Changes on Database Applications

Database applications are becoming increasingly popular, mainly due to the advanced data management facilities that the underlying database management system offers compared against traditional legacy software applications. The interaction, however, of such applications with the database system introduces a number of issues, among which, this paper addresses the impact analysis of the changes performed at the database schema level. Our motivation is to provide the software engineers of database applications with automated methods that facilitate major maintenance tasks, such as source code corrections and regression testing, which should be triggered by the occurrence of such changes. The presented impact analysis is thus two-folded： the impact is analysed in terms of both the affected source code statements and the affected test suites concerning the testing of these applications. To achieve the former objective, a program slicing technique is employed, which is based on an extended version of the program dependency graph. The latter objective requires the analysis of test suites generated for database applications, which is accomplished by employing testing techniques tailored for this type of applications. Utilising both the slicing and the testing techniques enhances program comprehension of database applications, while also supporting the development of a number of practical metrics regarding their maintainability against schema changes. To evaluate the feasibility and effectiveness of the presented techniques and metrics, a software tool, called DATA, has been implemented. The experimental results from its usage on the TPC-C case study are reported and analysed.

A Technological Overview of Biogas Production from Biowaste

The current irrational use of fossil fuels and the impact of greenhouse gases on the environment are driving research into renewable energy production from organic resources and waste. The global energy demand is high, and most of this energy is produced from fossil resources. Recent studies report that anaerobic di- gestion （AD） is an efficient alternative technology that combines biofuel production with sustainable waste management, and various technological trends exist in the biogas industry that enhance the production and quality of biogas. Further investments in AD are expected to meet with increasing success due to the low cost of available feedstocks and the wide range of uses for biogas （i.e., for heating, electricity, and fuel）. Bio- gas production is growing in the European energy market and offers an economical alternative for bioenergy production. The objective of this work is to provide an overview of biogas production from lignocellulosic waste, thus providing information toward crucial issues in the biogas economy.
