In this paper we present an experimental validated system for measuring rainfall due to radio frequency (RF) signal attenuation at 2 GHz. Measurements took place in Ioannina, nW Greece, starting in April 2015 and lasting for twelve months. The primary acquired extensive results have shown reliable and accurate measurements for rainfall amounts smaller than 1 mm for 5 min periods. The very important innovation is that this paper presents significant earth-to-earth measurements due to rainfall attenuation (at 2 GHz) in order to act as a map for future investigation and as a prior knowledge for the behavior of other systems operating at frequencies around S-band.

The necessity of lowering the mean power consumption of various facilities, due to the lack of their enormous future energy needs, led to an ongoing advance of various technologies. These technologies have been oriented towards the concept of a Reduced Ecological Footprint. Massive structures (such as building complexes and hospitals) have been redesigned and upgraded;many interior designs have been dramatically altered while new electronic devices are constantly being produced in order to revolutionize a long term perspective towards a “Green Planet” while they exhibit astonishing signal processing. Consequently, an enormous technology already exists which needs to be properly combined to a proposed methodology and to new ideas relevant to systems’ administration through automatic wireless control. This paper intends to reduce the gap between design and realization of the aforementioned research. Consequently, the primary contribution of this research is the proposal of a complete design protocol with minimized defects relevant to Reduced Ecological Footprints of Facilities (REFF) along with its beneficial advantages relevant to providing a healthy and productive work environment. This protocol consists of four main parts which are 1) the main key points-guidelines, 2) its objectives, 3) the know-how methodology for implementation in existing installations and 4) the description of the imminent benefits in workforce/human resources.

Objective(s): Laryngeal inflammations lead to voice disorders. Medical conditions such as chronic laryngitis, gastroesophageal reflux, laryngopharyngeal reflux, Reinke edema and/or vocal folds hemorrhage, result in diverse symptoms including chronic cough, throat cleaning and dysphonia (e.g. hoarseness). In turn, the dysphonic symptoms can be evaluated via subjective and objective procedures. The objective procedures usually include self-perceived questionnaires like the Voice Handicap Index (VHI). Studies reported that VHI can distinguish objectively dysphonic and non-dysphonic populations using the cut-off points of Receiver Operating Characteristic Curves. The purpose of this study was to calculate the cut-off points for individuals exhibiting voice symptoms which had been developed from laryngeal inflammatory diseases in Greece. Methods: One hundred and twelve participants (90 non-dysphonic and 22 dysphonic) filled in the Hellenic Voice Handicap Index (VHI) and the Greek translated version of Voice Evaluation Template (VEF) were administrated. All subjects were evaluated by an Otolaryngologist and a Speech-Language Pathologist. Results: The group with voice disorders exhibited higher VHI scores (in total and in its 3 subdomains) compared to non-dysphonic subgroup. Statistical significant differences were found for all VHI’s total cut-off point of 19.50 (sensitivity: 0.882, 1-specificity: 0.011) and for its three subdomains [functional 6.50 (sensitivity = 0.636, and 1-specificity = 0.022);physical 9.50 (sensitivity = 0.636, and 1-specificity = 0.000);emotional 6.50 (sensitivity = 0.455, and 1-specificity = 0.133)]. Conclusion: The preliminary results showed that VHI could discriminate individuals having voice disorders from laryngeal inflammations. The Voice Handicap Index can be used as a primary health care tool and a self-monitoring procedure in acute and sub-acute phases of the laryngeal inflammation.

Modified porous tantalum rod technique for the treatment of femoral head osteonecrosis

AIM: To study a modified porous tantalum technique for the treatment of osteonecrosis of the femoral ***: The porous tantalum rod was combined with endoscopy,curettage,autologous bone grafting and use of bone marrow aspirates from iliac crest aspiration in 49 patients(58 hips) with a mean age of 38 *** majority of the patients had idiopathic osteonecrosis,followed by corticosteroid-induced *** hips were of Steinberg stage Ⅱ disease and 20 hips were of stage Ⅲ *** were followed for 5 years and were evaluated clinically with the Merle D'Aubigne and Postel score and *** primary outcome of the study was survival based on the conversion to total hip arthroplasty(THA).Secondary outcomes included deterioration of the osteonecrosis to a higher disease stage at 5 years compared to the preoperative period and identification of factors that were associated with *** Kaplan-Meier survival analysis was performed to evaluate the survivorship ofthe prosthesis,and the Fisher exact test was performed to test associations between various parameters with ***: no patient developed any serious intraoperative or postoperative complication including implant loosening or migration and donor site *** the 5-year follow up,1 patient died,7 patients had disease progression and 4 hips were converted to *** 5-year survival based on conversion to THA was 93.1% and the respective rate based on disease progression was 87.9%.Stage Ⅱ disease was associated with statistically significant better survival rates compared to stage Ⅲ disease(P = 0.04).The comparison between idiopathic and non-idiopathic osteonecrosis and between steroid-induced and non-steroid-induced osteonecrosis did not showed any statistically significant difference in survival *** clinical evaluation revealed statistically significantly improved Merle d'Aubigne scores at 12 mo postoperatively compared to the preoperative period

Objectives: To identify local resource use such as pharmaceutical treatment, medical follow-up, and patient hospitalization and estimate the budget impact of simeprevir (SMV) plus pegylated interferon (P)/ribavirin (R) as a treatment option in the early stages of the disease in Greece. Methods: A budget impact tool was developed with a two-year time horizon, which estimated the impact on the Social Insurance Funds (SIFs) of introducing SMV + PR in the management of the early disease stages. Total direct and indirect costs were estimated for each of the following health states: non-cirrhotic chronic Hepatitis C (and within that by fibrosis stage), compensated cirrhosis, decompensated cirrhosis, and hepatocellular carcinoma. Data gaps on treatment algorithms, resource use and productivity losses were covered via an expert panel of eight leading hepatologists. Epidemiology data were taken from the published literature. Unit costs were obtained from the Ministry of Health and SIFs. The perspective was that of the SIF and the cost base year was 2015. Results: The total (direct and indirect) cost per patient per year (excluding cost of antiviral treatment) was estimated at €647, €703, €5,753, €16,313 and €37,237 for non-cirrhotic CHC, compensated cirrhosis, decompensated cirrhosis, HCC and liver transplantation, respectively. The budget impact analysis showed that adding SMV to PR in the early stages of the disease would lead to an increase in the cost of antiviral treatment by €2.03 million. Conclusions: Costs of managing CHC increase dramatically with disease severity. SMV + PR for naive patients at early disease stages has a significant but manageable budget impact, and could prevent high costs in advanced stages.

This paper introduces a novel methodology to address the issue of destination carrying capacity assessment and monitoring,while,to develop a new tool to enable effective and optimized policy making in tourism *** fits together a chain value,where stakeholders are working as cogwheels targeting the *** inherent requirement towards the objectives of sustainability is the capacity of policy makers to sustain the available social,economic,and environmental *** the facts that(i)carrying capacity is a complex,dynamic,multidimensional concept,apparently vague,as such it is quite difficult to assess and monitor and(ii)each destination has unique characteristics,varying the extent and intensity of tourism development,the research proposal refines and implements measures and establishes a state-of-the-art data collection network in order to monitor tourism development in terms of sustainability and to establish an integrated carrying capacity estimation *** validity and reliability of input data is a critical issue,different kind of sensors for environmental data(IoTs)are used,as well as web mining methods and field surveys,statistical information and secondary research ***,specialized analysis methods are applied and integration of all sources is achieved,defining the characteristics of the tourism destination ecosystem from the perspective of entropy change,in order to provide planning,policy making,and decision support,as well as a set of intelligent tools.
