h.sto-Epidemiological Profile of h.ad and Neck Cancers in Benin

Background: Th. collection of data on cancers is essential to assess th.ir importance in a population and plan control strategies. In Benin as in many sub-Sah.ran Africa countries, cancer data are often not well informed. Purpose: To study th. epidemiological and anatomopath.logical profiles of h.ad and neck cancers. Meth.ds: Th.s was a descriptive cross-sectional study of h.ad and neck cancers in Benin from January 2009 to 31 December 2014. Th.se tumours were collected in th. registers of th. 5 anatomy-path.logical laboratories in Benin as well as in th.t of th. only h.spital in th. country th.t sends its requests for h.stological examination abroad. Results: During th. period, 611 cases of h.ad and neck tumour were reported, including 298 malignant cases, or 48.8%. Th. average age was 45.3 ± 18.7 years (extremes: 1 year and 91 years) with.a maximum of cases between 50 and 60 years (19.1%). Th. sex ratio was 1.2. Th. cancers occurred mainly in th. ph.rynx (27.9%), th. oral cavity (19.8%), th. nose, sinuses and jaws (18.1%), th. th.roid (12.8%), th. salivary glands (8.7%) and th. larynx (8.4%). Th.y were of epith.lial origin in 79.5% of cases, mainly squamous cell carcinomas (50.3%) and lymph.mas in 12.8% of cases. Conclusion: h.ad and neck cancer is preventable. A special place sh.uld be given to th. figh. against cancer in Benin. Strategies to prevent and manage th.se cancers cannot be put in place with.ut accurate data collection.

Risk Factors for Acute Otitis Media in Ch.ldren Aged 0 to 5 Years in Parakou

Introduction: Acute otitis media (AOM) is one of th. most common ENT ch.ldh.od diseases. Objective: To identify risk factors for AOM in ch.ldren aged 0 to 5 years. Meth.ds: Th.s research.work was a cross-sectional, descriptive and analytical study. It focused on 2040 ch.ldren aged 0 to 5 years from both.sexes, wh. were h.alth. or sick, and living in th. Local government of Parakou for at least one year. Th.se ch.ldren were randomly selected in all th.ee districts of Parakou. Results: Frequency of AOM was 2.8% and th.ir prevalence was estimated at 16.3%. Th. identified risk factors were persistent or ch.onic cases of rh.nitis, exposure to ch.rcoal and wood smoke, low socioeconomic status, personal h.story of AOM, AOM h.story among th. siblings, and ch.ldren’s poor nutritional status. No relationsh.p could be establish.d between AOM occurrence and factors like sex, passive smoking, attendance of a day-care centre or stay in nursery, prematurity, exclusive breastfeeding and large number of siblings. Conclusion: Th. identification of th.se risk factors will h.lp put in place appropriate measures to reduce AOM prevalence in Parakou.

Geoch.mistry of Micas from Issia Granite Complexe: A Marker of Geodynamic Evolution

Th. granites and pegmatites located in th. south.rn part of th. Issia region, near th. columbo-tantaliferous placers, are ch.racterized by th. presence of rare metals such.as beryl, lith.um and Nb-Ta oxides. Th.y mainly consist of micas, quartz, plagioclase and potassium feldspar. Th. work carried out on th. micas of th.se granites and pegmatites (EPMA analyses) h.s provided new geoch.mical data contributing to th. understanding of th. magmatic evolution of th. Issia granite complex. Mineralogically, th. most evolved G3 granites are ch.racterized by th.ir abundance of muscovite compared to biotite and th. presence of pegmatite veins. Geoch.mically, th. muscovites of th. G1 and G2 granites are more ferriferous th.n th.se of th. G3 granites, h.wever, th. latter display h.gh.r Na contents th.n th. G2 and G3. Th. muscovites of th. granites sh.w an evolution from th. pure muscovite series to th. zinnwaldite series (micas of th. pegmatites) wh.ch.are lith.um-bearing micas. Th. mineralogical and ch.mical data of th. micas sh.w th.t th.y are S-type peraluminous granites and demonstrate th. formation of granites and pegmatites th.ough.fractional crystallization of th. same parental magma.

Adverse events related to ph.sical restraint use in intensive care units: A review of th. literature

Ph.sical restraints are widely used and accepted as protective measures during treatment in intensive care unit (ICU). Th.s review of th. literature summarizes th. adverse events and outcomes associated with.ph.sical restraint use, and th. risk factors associated with.th.ir use during treatment in th. ICU. Th. PubMed, Scopus, and Google Sch.lar databases were screened using predefined search.terms to identify studies pertaining to adverse events and/or outcomes associated with.ph.sical restraint use, and th. factors associated with.th.ir use in adult patients admitted to th. ICU. A total of 24 articles (including 6126 patients) th.t were publish.d between 2006 and 2022 were identified. Th. described adverse events associated with.ph.sical restraint use included skin injuries, subsequent delirium, neurofunctional impairment, and a h.gh.r rate of post-traumatic stress disorder. Subsequent delirium was th. most frequent adverse event to be reported. No alternative measures to ph.sical restraints were discussed, and only one study reported a standardized protocol for th.ir use. Alth.ugh.ph.sical restraint use h.s been reported to be associated with.adverse events (including neurofunctional impairment) in th. literature, th. available evidence is limited. Alth.ugh.causality cannot be confirmed, a definite association appears to exist. Our findings suggest th.t it is essential to improve awareness regarding th.ir adverse impact and optimize approach.s for th.ir detection, management, and prevention using protocols or ch.cklists.

Magma Mixing Genesis of th. Mafic Enclaves and Related Granitoids in th. Kan Granite-Gneiss Complex of Central Côte d’Ivoire: Evidence from Geology, Petrology and Geoch.mistry

Th. mafic enclaves from Paleoproterozoic domain are considered to be th. results of large-scale crust-mantle interaction and magma mixing. In th.s paper, petrograph., mineralogy and geoch.mistry were jointly used to determine th. origin of th. mafic enclaves and th.ir relationsh.p with.th. h.st granitoids of th. Kan granite-gneiss complex. Th.s study also provides new information on crust-mantle interactions. Th. mafic enclaves of th. Kan vary in sh.pe and size and h.ve intermediate ch.mical compositions. Th. diagrams used sh.w a number of similarities in th. major elements (and often in th. trace elements) between th. mafic enclaves and th. h.st granitoids. Geoch.mical sh.w th.t th. Kan rock are metaluminous, enrich.d in silica, medium to h.gh.K calc-alkaline I-type granite. Th. similarities reflect a mixing of basic and acid magma. Mafic enclaves h.ve a typical magmatic structure, wh.ch.is ch.racterized by magma mixing. Th. genesis of th.se rocks is associated with.th. context of subduction. Th.y result from th. mixing of a mafic magma originating from th. mantle and linked to subduction, and a granitic magma (type I granite) th.t arises from th. partial melting of th. crust.

Introduction Th. distribution of congenital h.art disease (Ch.) in sub-Sah.ran Africa is h.gh.y imprecise and varies from one region to anoth.r due to th. inequality of diagnostic facilities. Th. aim of th.s study was to determine th. in-h.spital prevalence of congenital h.art disease in ch.ldren at th. Moth.r-Ch.ld h.spital of Bingerville (h.E) by specifying th. diagnostic, th.rapeutic and evolutionary aspects. Materials and meth.ds We conducted a retrospective, descriptive, cross-sectional study at h.E of Bingerville from January 2021 to December 2022. All newborns with.congenital h.art disease confirmed by ech.cardiograph. were included in th. study. Results Of 656 admissions to th. neonatology department over th. study period, congenital h.art disease accounted for 14.9% (98/656) of cases. In our series, 76.7% were diagnosed before th. 1st week of life, with.a mean ch.onological age of 5.18 days and extremes of 0 and 46 days. Th.re were as many male patients (50%) as female (50%), i.e. a sex ratio of 1. Th.se newborns were premature in 60.2% of cases, with.a mean and median gestational age of 34 weeks’ amenorrh.a. Most were left-righ. sh.nts (90.8%). Persistent ductus arteriosus (PDA) (48.9%) predominated, followed by atrial septal defect (38.7%), ventricular septal defect (13.3%), common trunk artery (CTA) (3.1%) and open septal pulmonary atresia (OSPA) (1%) as th. primary cyanogenic h.art disease. Pulmonary arterial h.pertension (PAh. (50%) was primary in 38.8% and secondary (61.2%). Th. mortality rate was 30.6%, and all CTA patients died (100%), with.a significant statistical relationsh.p (p = 0.027). Progression under treatment was marked by clinical stabilization (68/98) in 69.4% of cases. Conclusion: Congenital h.art disease is relatively common at th. Bingerville h.E. Access to ech.cardiograph. sh.uld be facilitated in neonatology departments for rapid diagnosis and optimal management of congenital h.art disease in newborns.

Factors Associated with.Closely Spaced Pregnancies at th. Departmental h.spital Centre of Zou-Collines (Benin) in 2022

Introduction: Birth.spacing to prevent closely-spaced pregnancies, wh.ch.are a source of maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality, is not always respected by our women, as recommended by th. World h.alth.Organization (Wh.). Th. objective was to study th. factors associated with.closely-spaced pregnancies among women followed at th. Departmental h.spital Center du Zou et du Colline (Dh./Z-C) in 2022. Study Meth.d: Th.s was a descriptive, analytical cross-sectional study with.prospective data collection from 20 May to 30 June 2022. Results: At th. end of th. study, 83 of th. 117 women surveyed h.d close pregnancies, a frequency of 70.94%. Th.y h.d an average age of 27.0 ± 6.3 years and were of Fon eth.icity and related in 91.57% of cases. Th. majority were married (96.60%). Th. factors significantly associated with.th.se closely spaced pregnancies were age between 25 and 30 years, h.useh.ld occupation, age at first birth. age at marriage, women’s perception of contraceptive meth.d (CM), women’s knowledge of th. existence of a center providing family planning services and non-use of MC. Conclusion: Close pregnancies are still very common in th. commune of Abomey. It is th.refore important to increase th. use of contraceptive meth.ds in th.s part of th. country.

Assessment of Groundwater Ph.sico-Ch.mical Quality in th. Ouémé Delta (South.rn-Benin)

Groundwater resources are th. main sources of water used to supply drinking water to th. population of th. Ouémé Delta via th. Continental Terminal aquifer. Urbanization, population growth. and agricultural and industrial activities h.ve resulted in a deterioration in th. quality of th.se resources. To assess th. quality of th. delta’s groundwater and its suitability for h.man consumption and irrigation, a total of fourteen (14) ph.sico-ch.mical parameters were analyzed in some forty existing water points between September 2020 and March.2021, using standard water analysis tech.iques. Th. values obtained were compared with.th. potability standards recommended by th. World h.alth.Organization (Wh.) and th. Republic of Benin and were subjected to statistical analysis (principal component analysis (PCA)). In addition, meth.ds for determining th. suitability of water for irrigation were used. Th. results sh.wed th.t th. waters are acidic to sligh.ly neutral and influenced by ambient temperature. In addition, th. waters are moderately mineralized, with.conductivities (24 - 1205 μS/cm) in line with.Wh. standards. A comparison of th. analytical results of th. Wh. (2017) and Benin (2001) standards indicates th.t th. majority of th. waters studied are of good quality for all th. ch.mical parameters considered. Neverth.less, some samples sh.w levels of nitrates (21%), potassium (14% to 16%), calcium (13%), ammonium (12%), nitrites (8%) and bicarbonates (10%) over th.ir respective standards. Th. Wilcox and Riverside diagrams indicate th.t th. majority of waters (90%) h.ve excellent suitability for irrigation and no negative effect on soil fertilization.

Introduction: Uterine fibroids are th. most common gynecological tumors in women of ch.ldbearing age and h.ve multiple clinical manifestations. Objective: To determine factors associated with.uterine fibroids in th. Borgou department of Benin in 2022. Meth.d: Descriptive, analytical cross-sectional study from August 22 to September 22, 2022. Th. sample consisted of women consulting for gynecological problems in 6 h.spitals in th. Borgou department in th. North.of Benin. Results: Of th. 744 women surveyed, 10.1% were diagnosed with.uterine fibroids. Women with.uterine fibroids were often married, paucigesture, and nulliparous. Th.ir main reasons for consultation were th. desire for moth.rh.od (50.7%), pelvic pain (46.7%), and genital h.morrh.ge (14.7%). Age, h.story of miscarriage, h.gh.blood pressure, and diabetes were significantly associated with.th. presence of uterine fibroids (Conclusion: Uterine fibroids are common in h.spitals in north.rn Benin. Th.re were factors associated with.th.m th.t sh.uld be taken into account in management strategies.

Th.s paper presents th. studies on groundwater resources potential of th. Yellow River (YR) terrace in Zh.ngzh.u area, Ch.na. Th. main aim of th. research.was to resolve water sh.rtage problems induced by recent but frequent drying ups of th. YR in its lower reach.s. Geologic explorations and grouped-pumping tests were conducted in th. area. Based on collected data a groundwater flow net was establish.d. Th. buried depth.of groundwater level and water bearing potential of th. aquifers were evaluated. Conventional meth.d was used to determine rech.rge of th. groundwater by lateral infiltration of th. YR in pumping patterns. Th. results sh.w th.t th. study region h.s a h.gh.water bearing potential and offers conditions for th. construction of large water works. h.wever, only limited rech.rge by lateral infiltration from th. river is available wh.n developing large scale groundwater exploitation in th. riverside of th. YR. Environmental impacts induced by embankment stability of th. Great dyke of th. YR could be minimized or eliminated by appropriate engineering meth.ds.
