GIS-based soil maps as tools to evaluate land capability and suitability in a coastal reclaimed area(Ravenna,northern Italy)

Land capability and suitability maps are useful tools for soil resource *** study aimed to build land capability and suitability maps using a multi-thematic approach by GIS in a salt-affected coastal area of ***,morphological,geological,pedological delineations and land cover maps,remote sensing image and climate data were acquired and the main physical and chemical properties,including electrical conductivity(EC)and available water capacity,were analysed on the soil samples collected in the study *** acquired information were elaborated through QGIS software to obtain the land capability and suitability *** suitability map showed that most of the area(80%)is suitable for cultivation and,therefore,can be addressed for agricultural purposes without risk of *** fact,the land capability map showed that 42%of the investigated area belongs to class I and II indicating that they can be used for a wide range of *** 44%of the investigated area clustered in class III and *** these latter the cultivation should be allowed to a limited range of crops due to the high sand content,which does not allow a good water retention,and due to a strong intrusion of sea water with consequent increase of the soil *** our study area,where agricultural productivity and environmental impact are in conflict,to classify the lands on base the land capability and suitability could help to define the best agricultural practices to apply in order to preserve soil functions.

Objectives： The sails fabrication knew a significant development under the impulse of sailing races like the America＇s Cup and the Volvo around the World Race. These competitions require advanced technologies to increase performance of the sails. In the paper, Reverse Engineering （RE） acquisition, CAD （Computer Aided Design） reconstruction and FE （Finite Element） analysis are used in the design phase for a spinnaker in order to maximize the performance of the sail boat. Materials and Methods： The comparison, between the design data and the characteristics in the real conditions of use of the sail （constant wind pressure acting on the sail）, was carried out by the reconstruction of the three-dimensional CAD model of the spinnaker shape in full-scale, using a non contact Reverse Engineering technique, the photogrammetry and by a FE non linear static analysis. Results： The results of this study show a good correspondence between the design data and the characteristics in the real conditions of use of the sail. Significance： The described methodology is useful for sail makers. It can be successfully adopted to generate three-dimensional CAD-FE models of a sail starting from a very cheap and fast Reverse Engineering non-contact procedure.

Background Kernza®intermediate wheatgrass is a perennial grain and forage crop that can provide several ecosystem *** research efforts focused on Kernza have taken place in high *** goal of this study was to evaluate,for the first time,the agronomic performance of Kernza in a low-latitude region with mild *** A KS-cycle 4 Kernza population(A)was planted in spring in Wisconsin,USA,and selected in one cycle for lower vernalization requirements,obtaining a new population(B).These two populations,at three nitrogen(N)fertilization rates,were evaluated in a full factorial,completely randomized field experiment in Uruguay over 2 *** The populations were similar in grain yields and flowering time in the 1st year,but population B had 63%lower grain yield in the 2nd year and 20%lower forage yield throughout the *** the N rate to 160 kg ha−1 led to a 63%increase in grain yield and 28%increase in forage yield across *** yields and nutritive values were similar to those reported in the northern ***,grain yields for both the 1st(316 kg ha−1)and 2nd year(41 kg ha−1)were lower due to reduced flowering and weed *** Expansion of Kernza to lower-latitude regions will require further breeding to improve reproductive performance.

The chemical compositions of Ag-Er co-doped phosphate and silicate glasses were investigated with X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy with the purpose to identify the chemical state of silver. The analysis of the Ag 3d core lines show the presence of nanometer-sized silver particles in each of the annealed samples,even if these Ag 3d lines appear to be very different from each other. We explain these results as a different interaction of silver with the two glasses matrix,which leads to a different nucleation rate of the Ag clusters.

In the present investigation, the sensitivity of different direct microbial count procedures applied on systems containing both planktonics and sessiles was tested. The direct count pour plate was compared with direct epifluorescent microscopic enumerations in order to evaluate the efficiency of the studied techniques in giving information about microbial activity or viability. Our results indicate that the standard plate count procedure is the most sensitive method to estimate viable and cultivable planktonic cells. On the other hand, direct enumeration by epifluorescent microscopy may become an interesting alternative to count sessile cells.

Functional Starter Cultures for Meat: A Case Study on Technological and Probiotic Characterization

The selection of a starter is a complex process, involving different steps, like a preliminary characterization under laboratory conditions, the selection of the most promising strains, a lab validation and the final validation in a large-scale fermentation;the selection of a functional starter includes a further step, dealing with the assessment of the functional traits. This paper proposes a case study on how use a step-by-step approach, based on some rapid protocols, to select promising starter cultures with probiotic abilities. Nine strains, isolated from a commercial preparation, were studied in relation to some enzymatic activities (slime and acetoin production, reduction of nitrates, proteolytic activity and hydrolysis of tributyrin), technological (acidification and growth at different temperatures, pHs and salt amounts) and probiotic traits (hydrophobicity, co-aggregation towards Salmonella sp. and Escherichia coli, survival at pH 2.5 and in presence of bile salts, antibiotic resistance) and compared to some collection isolates. As a final step, a multivariate approach was used to select the most promising isolates. The isolates from the commercial preparation were able to perform the fermentation (e.g. acidification) at low temperatures with some interesting traits in terms of bioactivity towards E. coli O157:H7, whilst some interesting probiotic traits in terms of hydrophobicity and survival in conditions that mimicked the gut were found for the collection isolates.

Early Surgery in Femoral Neck Fractures in Elderly: Does Preoperative ASA Score Matter?

Introduction: Early surgical treatment (within 48 hours) has been recommended for femoral neck fractures in order to avoid complications and reduce mortality rate, regardless of presence and severity of comorbidity and preoperative status (ASA score). However some studies evidenced that early surgery doesn’t always have a beneficial effect on mortality and complications. Therefore further studies could be useful in order to better assess risk related factors of patients requiring surgical treatment for femoral neck fracture. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effect of preoperative ASA score and timing of surgery on mortality, complications and clinical outcome. Methods: All 336 patients operated in our center from January 2013 to December 2014 were selected for this retrospective study. Patients were divided in three groups as follows: group 1 patients treated within 48 hours;group 2 patients treated between 48 to 96 hours;group 3 patients treated over 96 hours. The preoperative ASA score was recorded for each patient. Complication, clinical outcome and mortality at one-year follow-up were evaluated. At follow-up ambulation was graded as: confined to bed, assisted ambulation, and normal ambulation. Complications both local (infections, malunion, dislocation) and systemic (deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, lung infections, ischemic disorders of heart) were recorded as well as number of transfusions. Statistical analysis was performed with chi square test and P value Results: 308 patients’ data were fully available for this study. At one-year follow-up return to normal ambulation was higher for patients of group 1 as compared with group 2 and 3 and in group 2 as compared with group 3 (P = 0.04). There was no difference in mortality and return to ambulation between patients with ASA score 1 and 2 (P = 0.06);patients with ASA score ≥ 3 showed a statistically significant higher mortality (P = 0.004) and rate of complications (0.0008) regardless of timi
