Pediatric upper extremity firearm injuries:an analysis of demographic factors and recurring mechanisms of injury

Background Little is known regarding risk factors specific to pedialric upper extremity firearm *** purpose of this study is to evaluate pediatric patients treated for these injuries to identify at-risk populations and recurring mechanisms of *** A 20-year retrospective review was *** 17 years of age and younger,with upper extremity injuries related to a firearm,were *** involved Fisher's exact and Chi-square *** One hundred and eighty patients were *** mean age was 12.04±4.3 *** included patients were male(85%).Interestingly,females were more frequently victims of assault(P=0.03),and males were more frequently injured due to accidental discharge(P<0.001).The most affected race/ethnicity was White-not Hispanic or Latino(48%).The hand was the most frequent location injured(31%)and was more likely to be accidental than proximal injuries(P=0.003).Air rifes were the most common firearm type used(56%).Pistols were implicated in 47(26%)cases,rifles in 17(9%),*** in 10(6%).Ninety-nine(55%)patients had procedures in the operating *** most frequent procedure was foreign body removal(55%).Conclusions Risk factors such as male sex,W hite-not Hispanic or Latino race/ethnicity,and adolescent age were attributed to increased risk for *** sex was associated with increased risk of injury by accidental discharge and female sex with intentional *** rifles were the most common firearm type overall,although female sex was associated with increased risk for injury by powder weapon.

In the development and regeneration of the nervous system, neurons face the complex task of establishing and/or repairing neuronal connections and contacts. The formation of these neuronal circuits is largely coordinated by tightly regulated temporal and spatial changes in mRNA translation, which enables incredibly precise control over protein expression and localization (Jung and Holt, 2011). Local mRNA translation in specific cellular compartments appears to play a role in many processes that are important to nervous system development and regeneration, including: cell survival, migration, growth cone guidance, and synaptogenesis (Jung and Holt, 2011).

Zircon U-Pb geochronology has become a keystone tool across Earth science, arguably providing the gold standard in resolving deep geological time. The development of rapid in situ analysis of zircon （via laser ablation and secondary ionization mass spectrometry） has allowed for large amounts of data to be generated in a relatively short amount of time and such large volume datasets offer the ability to address a range of geological questions that would otherwise remain intractable （e.g. detrital zircons as a sedi- ment fingerprinting method）. The ease of acquisition, while bringing benefit to the Earth science com- munity, has also led to diverse interpretations of geochronological data. In this work we seek to refocus U -Pb zircon geochronology toward best practice by providing a robust statistically coherent workflow. We discuss a range of data filtering approaches and their inherent limitations （e.g. discordance and the reduced chi-squared; MSWD）. We evaluate appropriate mechanisms to calculate the most geologically appropriate age from both 238U/206pb and 207pb/206pb ratios and demonstrate the cross over position when chronometric power swaps between these ratios. As our in situ analytical techniques become progressively more precise, appropriate statistical handing of U-Pb datasets will become increasingly pertinent.

A Comparative Study of Morphological Responses of Seedling Roots to Drying Soil in 20 Species from Different Habitats

Rooting depth and root and shoot biomass were measured for seedlings of 20 species in both watered and unwatered sand columns. The species were from habitats of widely varying moisture status, ranging from marsh to desert. Moisture status of the species' habitats was quantified as Ellenberg moisture number. Seedlings were allowed to grow in moist sand for 21 days and were then exposed to the treatments (watered and unwatered) for a further 21 days. Rooting depth of control plants was not correlated with Ellenberg number. Root depth of plants from dry habitats tended to increase in drying sand, while roots of plants from wet habitats decreased in depth. Plasticity of rooting depth (depth in unwatered / depth in watered sand) was significantly correlated with Ellenberg number ( r 2 = 0.56). Plasticity of shoot/root ratio was also correlated with Ellenberg number, but the relationship was weaker than for rooting depth plasticity. Species that showed the greatest plasticity in rooting depth also showed the greatest ability to sustain shoot growth in unwatered sand. There was some evidence that growth of plants from very dry habitats was reduced in the watered treatment. Results of this study suggest that a major, although not the only, adaptation of plants of dry habitats is the ability of their seedlings to exploit deeply buried water resources.

When early explorers first crossed the Platte River in what is now Nebraska (USA), it was said the river was “a mile wide and an inch deep”(Mokler, 1923;Smith, 1971). This phrase was used to describe not only the difficulty in crossing the river but also in navigating its length. The trouble with a river being too wide is the risk that it won’t provide the depth necessary to be useful. The same thing can be said of multidisciplinary scientific journals. While a journal can claim to be multidisciplinary, there is a risk of it being so broad that its articles can only engage the reader at a superficial level. Nothing could be further from the truth with Geoscience Frontiers. Over the past ten years, this journal has successfully navigated the wide breadth of geoscience while providing a level of depth and detail that rivals discipline-specific journals.
