What is artificial meat and what does it mean for the future of the meat industry?

The meat industry cannot respond to increases in demand by ever increasing resource use. The industry must find solutions to issues regarding animal welfare, health and sustainability and will have to do so in the face of competition from emerging non-traditional meat and protein products in an increasingly complex regulatory environment. These novel meat and protein products, otherwise known as ‘artificial meat＇ are utilising ground breaking technologies designed to meet the issues facing the conventional meat industry. These artificial meats, in vitro or cultured meat and meat from genetically modified organisms have no real capacity to compete with conventional meat production in the present environment. However, meat repla.ements manufactured from plant proteins and mycoproteins are currently the biggest competitors and are gaining a small percentage of the market. Manufactured meats may push conventional meat into the premium end of the market, and supply the bulk, cheap end of the market if conventional meat products become more expensive and the palatability and versatility of manufactured meats improve. In time the technology for other artificial meats such as meat from genetic modified organisms or cultured meat may become sufficiently developed for these products to enter the market with no complexity of the competition between meat products. Conventional meat producers can assimila.e agroecology ecology concepts in order to develop sustainable animal production systems. The conventional meat industry can also benefit from assimilating biotechnologies such as cloning and genetic modification technologies, using the technology to adapt to the changing environment and respond to the increasing competition from artificial meats. Although it will depend at least partly on the evolution of conventional meat production, the future of artificial meat produced from stem cells appears uncertain at this time.

Weak Continuity of Riemann Integrable Functions in Lebesgue-Bochner Spaces

In general, Banach space-valued Riemann integrable functions defined on [0, 1] （equipped with the Lebesgue measure） need not be weakly continuous almost everywhere. A Banach space is said to have the weak Lebesgue property if every Riemann integrable function taking values in it is weakly continuous almost everywhere. In this paper we discuss this property for the Banach space LX^1 of all Bochner integrable functions from [0, 1] to the Banach space X. We show that LX^1 has the weak Lebesgue property whenever X has the Radon-Nikodym property and X＊ is separable. This generalizes the result by Chonghu Wang and Kang Wan [Rocky Mountain J. Math., 31（2）, 697-703 （2001）] that L^1[0, 1] has the weak Lebesgue property.

Regions of slow strain often produce swarm-like sequences,characterized by the lack of a clear mainshockaftershock *** comprehension of their underlying physical mechanisms is challenging and still *** used seismic recordings from the last pollino swarm(2010-2014) and nearby to separate and map seismic scattering(from p peak-delays) and absorption(from la.e-time coda-wave attenuation) at different frequencies in the pollino range and ***-scattering and high-absorption anomalies are markers of a fluid-filled fracture volume extending from Se to NW(1.5-6 Hz) across the *** increasing frequency,these anomalies approximately cover the area where the strongest earthquakes occurred from the sixteenth century until *** our interpretation,the NW fracture propagation ends where carbonates of the Lucanian Apennines begin,as marked by a high-scattering and low-absorption *** the highest frequency(12 Hz) the anomalies widen southward in the middle of the range,consistently marking the faults active during the recent pollino *** results suggest that fracture healing has closed small-scale fractures across the Se faults that were active in the past centuries,and that the propagation of fluids may have pla.ed a crucial role in triggering the 2010-2014 pollino *** that the fluid propagation ended at the carbonates barrier in the NW direction,fractures opened new paths to the South,favoring the nucleation of the last pollino ***,the recently active faults in the middle of the seismogenic volume are marked by a high-scattering and highabsorption *** work provides evidence that attenuation parameters may track shape and dynamics of fluid-filled fracture networks in fault areas.

The identification of jets originating from quarks and gluons,often referred to as quark/gluon tagging,plays an important role in various analyses performed at the large Hadron Collider,as Standard Model measurements and searches for new particles decaying to quarks often rely on suppressing a large gluon-induced *** paper describes the measurement of the efficiencies of quark/gluon taggers developed within the ATlaS Collaboration,using √s=13 TeV proton–proton collision data with an integrated luminosity of 140 fb^(-1) collected by the ATlaS *** taggers with high performances in rejecting jets from gluon over jets from quarks are studied:one tagger is based on requirements on the number of inner-detector tracks associated with the jet,and the other combines several jet substructure observables using a boosted decision tree.A method is established to determine the quark/gluon fraction in data,by using quark/gluon-enriched subsamples defined by the jet *** in tagging efficiency between data and simulation are provided for jets with transverse momentum between 500 GeV and 2 TeV and for multiple tagger working points.

The experimental data concerning the58Ni+48Ca reaction at elab(Ni)=25A MeV,collected by using the CHIMeRA 4π device,have been analyzed in order to investigate the competition among different reaction mechanisms for central collisions in the Fermi energy *** a main criterion for centrality selection we have chosen the flow angle(flow) method,making an event-by-event analysis that considers the shape of events,as it is determined by the eigenvectors of the experimental kinetic-energy *** the selected central events(flow >60°) some global variables,good to characterize the pattern of central collisions have been *** main features of the reaction products were explored by using different constraints on some of the relevant observables,like mass and velocity distributions and their *** emphasis was devoted,for central collisions,to the competition between fusion-evaporation processes with subsequent identification of a heavy residue and a possible multifragmentation mechanism of a well defined(if any) transient nuclear *** evolution of the system and pre-equilibrium emission were taken into account by simulating the reactions in the framework of transport *** approaches have been envisaged(dynamical stochastic BNV calculations + sequential SIMON code,QMD,CoMD,etc.).preliminary comparison of the experimental data with BNV calculations shows reasonable agreement with the assumption of sequential multifragmentation emission in the mass region of IMFs close to the heavy *** deviations from sequential processes were found for those IMFs in the region of masses intermediate between the mass of heavy residues and the mass of light *** simulations are in *** experimental analysis will be enriched also by information obtained inspecting the IMF-IMF correlation function,in order to elucidated the nature of space-time decay property of the emitting source associated with events having

Whole-genome duplications are an important source of evolutionary novelties that change the mode and tempo at which genetic elements evolve within a genome. The Cucurbita genus experienced a wholegenome duplication around 30 million years ago, although the evolutionary dynamics of the coding and noncoding genes in this genus have not yet been scrutinized. Here, we analyzed the genomes of four Cucurbita species, in eluding a newly assembled genome of Cucurbita argyrosperma, and compared the gene con tents of these species with those of five other members of the Cucurbitaceae family to assess the evolutionary dynamics of protein-coding and long intergenic noncoding RNA (lincRNA) genes after the genome duplication. We report that Cucurbita genomes have a higher protein-coding gene birth-death rate compared with the genomes of the other members of the Cucurbitaceae family. C. argyrosperma gene families associated with pollination and transmembrane transport had significantly faster evolutionary rates. lincRNA families showed high levels of gene turnover throughout the phylogeny, and 67.7% of the lincRNA families in Cucurbita showed evidence of birth from the neofunctionalization of previously existing protein-coding genes. Collectively, our results suggest that the whole-genome duplication in Cucurbita resulted in faster rates of gene family evolution through the neofunctionalization of duplicated genes.

Chronic constipation in hemiplegic patients

AIM: To assess the prevalence of bowel dysfunction in hemiplegic patients, and its relationship with the site of neurological lesion, physical immobilization and pharmacotherapy. MeTHODS: Ninety consecutive hemiplegic patients and 81 consecutive orthopedic patients were investigated during physical motor rehabilitation in the same period, in the same center and on the same diet. All subjects were interviewed ≥ 3 mo after injury using a questionnaire inquiring about bowel habits before injury and at the time of the interview. patients’ mobility was evaluated by the Adapted patient evaluation Conference System. Drugs considered for the analysis were nitrates, angiogenic converting enzyme (ACe) inhibitors, calcium antagonists, anticoagulants, antithrombotics, antidepressants, anti-epileptics. ReSULTS: Mobility scores were similar in the two groups. De novo constipation (OR = 5.36) was a frequent outcome of the neurological accident. Hemiplegics showed an increased risk of straining at stool (OR: 4.33), reduced call to evacuate (OR: 4.13), sensation of incomplete evacuation (OR: 3.69), use of laxatives (OR: 3.75). Logistic regression model showed that constipation was significantly and independently associated with hemiplegia. A positive association was found between constipation and use of nitrates and antithrombotics in both groups. Constipation was not rela.ed to the site of brain injury. CONCLUSION: Chronic constipation is a possible outcome of cerebrovascular accidents occurring in 30% of neurologically stabilized hemiplegic patients. Its onset after a cerebrovascular accident appears to be independent from the injured brain hemisphere, and unrela.ed to physical inactivity. pharmacological treatment with nitrates and antithrombotics may represent an independent risk factor for developing chronic constipation.

Solid-state synthesis of LnOCl/Ln_2O_3(Ln=eu, Nd) by using chitosan and pS-co-p4Vp as polymeric supports

A series of lanthanide materials of type LnOCl or Ln2O3(Ln = eu, Nd) were successfully prepared via a convenient and straightforward two-step procedure. Firstly, and by using chitosan and pS-co-p4 Vp as polymeric supports, macromolecular complexes of type chitosan ·LnCl3and pS-co-p4 Vp·LnCl3 were prepared. These macro molecular complexes were treated in solid state at 800 ℃ under air, leading to the corresponding LnOCl or Ln2O3materials(Ln = eu, Nd) with moderate to good yields. The nature of the asprepared lanthanide materials(LnOCl and/or Ln2O3) is strongly influenced by the polymeric templa.e(i.e.,chitosan or pS-co-p4 Vp), the lanthanide salt precursor, and the polymer/lanthanide molar ratio. Thus, when chitosan · euCl3and pS-co-p4 Vp·euCl3are used as macromolecular precursors, a mixture of crystalline phases of both euOCl and eu2O3are obtained. However, when chitosan· NdCl3and pS-co-p4 Vp· NdCl3are used, a sole pure crystalline phase of NdOCl is obtained. The nano structured lanthanide materials were characterized by means of XRD(X-ray diffraction of powder), SeM, eDS, TeM, and HRTeM. The luminescent spectra of the asprepared euOCI/eu2O3mixture materials show an emission pattern whose intensity is strongly influenced by the nature of the polymeric precursor, as well as on the metal/polymer molar ratios.
