Sex development anomalies represent a group of congenital pathologies in which chromosomal, gonadal and anatomical sex differentiation is atypical. the aim of our study was to use molecular biology techniques to elucidate sex in cases of anomalies of sexual differentiation in Burkina Faso. this cross-sectional study took place from March 2023 to June 2023. Oral and blood samples were collected respectively using sterile swabs and stored on Swab Kits and NUCLeIcardTM (https://***/product-ranges/nucleic-card/) were used to determine gonosome profiles. extraction was carried out using the DNA Swap solution Kit and the DNA IQ System Kit, and a PowerPlex? 21 kit (Promega) for amplification. the Applied Biosystems 9700 thermal cycler was used for PCR followed by 36 cm capillary electrophoresis in the Applied Biosystems 3130 prism sequencer. Sequence files were analyzed using GeneMapper IDX v. 3.2 software. Seven (07) patients were registered during the study period. there were 4 cases of XX DSD or 46, XX DSD and 3 cases of XY DSD or 46, XY DSD. the median age of our patients was 16 years. Civilian sex was male in 4 cases and female in 3. the most frequent reason for consultation was micropenis in 3 cases, followed by primary amenorrhea and sex ambiguity. there were 03 cases of discrepancy between genetic sex and civil sex. the accessibility of molecular diagnosis is little known to clinicians. XX DSDs or 46, XX DSDs were the most frequent (4/7) in our study. the problem facing this situation is early diagnosis to help prevent complications in Burkina Faso.

Introduction: the epidemiology of both hepatitis B virus (HBV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV) infections among drug users (DUs) is little known in West Africa. the study aimed to assess the prevalence of hepatitis B and C viruses among drug users in Burkina Faso. Methodology: this was a cross-sectional biological and behavioral survey conducted between June and August 2022, among drug users in Ouagadougou and Bobo Dioulasso, the two main cities of Burkina Faso. A respondent-driven sampling (RDS) was used to recruit drug users. Hepatitis B surface antigen was determined using lateral flow rapid test kits and antibodies to hepatitis C virus in serum determined using an enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay. Data were entered and analyzed using Stata 17 software. Weighted binary logistic regression was used to identify the associated factors of hepatitis B and C infections and a p-value Results: A total of 323 drug users were recruited with 97.5% males. the mean age was 32.7 years old. the inhaled or smoked mode was the most used by drug users. the adjusted hepatitis B and hepatitis C prevalence among study participants were 11.1% and 2.3% respectively. the marital status (p = 0.001), and the nationality (p = 0.011) were significantly associated with hepatitis B infection. the type of drug used was not significantly associated with hepatitis B infection or hepatitis C infection. Conclusion: the prevalence of HBsAg and anti-HCV antibodies among DUs are comparable to those reported in the general population in Burkina Faso. this result suggests that the main routes of contamination by HBV and HCV among DUs are similar to those in the population, and could be explained by the low use of the injectable route by DUs in Burkina Faso.

Introduction: Microbiology of effusion fluids in children in Burkina Faso is characterized by the scarcity of data. this work aimed to study the bacteriological and antibiotics susceptibility profile of bacteria involved in effusion fluid infections in paediatrics in order to improve the choice of probabilistic antibiotics therapy. Methods: A cross-sectional, descriptive study was used in children aged 0 to 15 years from 2017 to 2020 at the Charles De Gaulle Pediatric University Hospital Center (CHUP-CDG) in Ouagadougou. Classical bacteriology methods such as macroscopy, Gram staining, identification galleries and antibiotics susceptibility testing were used. Results: Of 231 samples, 64 bacteria were isolated. the most common bacterial strains of pleural fluid were Staphylococcus aureus (25%) and 40% for enterobacteriaceae. Of the peritoneal fluid, 77% were enterobacteriaceae with 57% escherichia coli;and from joint fluid, 33% were S. aureus and 22% for P. aeruginosa. the overall susceptibility profile showed 29% extended-spectrum beta-lactamase-producing enterobacteriaceae (eSBL), 10% methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA), and 8% carbapenemases. Conclusion: Bacteriological profile is characterized by eSBL-producing enterobacteriaceae and MRSA. the most active antibiotics were macrolides, aminoglycosides, and cefoxitin (methicillin) for Gram-positive cocci, carbapenems, and aminoglycosides for Gram-negative bacilli. then, the monitoring of antibiotics resistance must be permanent.

the West African Monsoon (WAM) is characterized by strong decadal and multi-decadal variability and the impacts can be catastrophic for the local populations. One of the factors put forward to explain this variability involves the role of atmospheric dynamics, linked in particular to the Saharan Heat Low (SHL). this article addresses this question by comparing the sets of preindustrial control and historical simulation data from climate models carried out in the framework of the CMIP5 project and observations data over the 20th century. through multivariate statistical analyses, it was established that decadal modes of ocean variability and decadal variability of Saharan atmospheric dynamics significantly influence decadal variability of monsoon precipitation. these results also suggest the existence of external anthropogenic forcing, which is superimposed on the decadal natural variability inducing an intensification of the signal in the historical simulations compared to preindustrial control simulations. We have also shown that decadal rainfall variability in the Sahel, once the influence of oceanic modes has been eliminated, appears to be driven mainly by the activity of the Arabian Heat Low (AHL) in the central Sahel, and by the structure of the meridional temperature gradient over the inter-tropical Atlantic in the western Sahel.

Assessment of the Drafting Quality of Request Forms Submitted to the Malaria and Parasitology Units at the Institut Pasteur de Cote d’Ivoire

Biological tests provide information on the medical analysis requested by both the patient and the prescriber. It is a communication link between the prescriber and the laboratory staff. the lack of some information on request forms not only affects the drafting quality of the test and patient care, but could also make thousands of data produced by healthcare centers unusable. the aim of this study was to assess the drafting quality of request forms submitted to the Malaria and Parasitology Units at the Institut Pasteur de Côte d’Ivoire. Methods: It was a descriptive cross-sectional study to assess the drafting quality of request forms of various prescribers received at the Institut Pasteur de Côte d’Ivoire. this study was conducted at the Malaria and Parasitology Units, department of Parasitology and Mycology (Institut Pasteur de Côte d’Ivoire), from 6th December 2020 to 6th December 2021. the information on each request forms was recorded on a data collection form designed for this purpose. each data collection form corresponds to a request forms and each test to a patient. Results: Out of a total of 1990 request forms received, the patient’s age and sex were missing on 18% and 26.8% of the tests respectively. More than half (51.80%) of request forms did not indicate the patient’s place of residence. Clinical information was not provided on 45.90% of the tests. Prescribers omitting their signatures were 51%, stamps were 50.3% and contacts were 71.2%. Only 5.4% of request forms were of good drafting quality. Providing all the required information on the forms could facilitate the use and analysis of data and samples.

Understanding nutrient build-up on urban road surfaces

this article discusses the outcomes of a research project on nutrients build-up on urban road surfaces. Nutrient build-up was investigated on road sites belonging to residential, industrial and commercial land use. Collected build-up samples were separated into five particle size ranges and were tested for total nitrogen （TN）, total phosphorus （TP） and sub species of nutrients, namely, NO2^-, NO3^-, TKN and PO4^3-. Multivariate analytical techniques were used to analyse the data and to develop detailed understanding on build- up. Data analysis revealed that the solids loads on urban road surfaces are highly influenced by factors such as land use, antecedent dry period and traffic volume. However, the nutrient build-up process was found to be independent of the type of land use. It was solely dependent on the particle size of solids build-up. Most of the nutrients were associated with the particle size range 〈150 μm. therefore, the removal of particles below 150 μm from road surfaces is of importance for the removal of nitrogen and phosphorus from road surface solids build-up. It is also important to consider the difference in the composition of nitrogen and phosphorus build-up in the context of designing effective stormwater quality mitigation strategies.

Aim： To examine the effects on rat aging of caloric restriction （CR1） and undernutrition （CR2） on the body and on testicular weights, on two enzymatic antioxidants （superoxide dismutase and catalase）, on lipid peroxidation and on the expression of testicular aromatase and estrogen receptors （eR）. Methods： CR was initiated in 1-month-old rats and carried on until the age of 18 months. Results： In control and CR2 rats an age-related decrease of the aromatase and of eR （α and β） gene expression was observed; in parallel a diminution of testicular weights, and of the total number and motility of epididymal spermatozo was recorded. In addition, aging in control and CR2 rats was accompartied by a significant decrease in testicular superoxide dismutase, catalase activities, and an increase in lipid peroxidation level （thiobarbituric acid reactive substance）, associated with alterations of spermatogenesis. Conversely, caloric restriction-treatment exerted a protective effect and all the parameters were less affected by aging. Conclusion： these results indicate that during aging, a low caloric diet （not undernutrition） is beneficial for spermatogenesis and likely improves the protection of the cells via an increase of the cellular antioxidant defense system in which aromatase/ eR could play a role. （Asian J Andro12008 Mar; 10： 177-187）

Plants of the genus Cordia(Boraginaceae family)are widely distributed in the tropical regions of America,Africa,and *** are extensively used in folk medicine due to their rich medicinal *** review presents a comprehensive analysis of the isolation,structure,biogenesis,and biological properties of quinones from Cordia species reported from 1972 to *** were identified as the major quinones in most Cordia species and are reported as a chemotaxonomic markers of the *** addition to this property,quinones are reported to display a wider and broader spectrum of activities,are efficient scaffold in biological activity,compared to other classes of compounds reported in Cordia,hence our focus on the study of quinones reported from Cordia *** 70 types of quinones have been isolated,while others have been identified by phytochemical screening or gas *** the biosynthesis of quinones from Cordia species is not yet fully understood,previous reports suggest that they may be derived from geranyl pyrophosphate and an aromatic precursor unit,followed by oxidative cyclization of the allylic methyl *** have demonstrated that quinones from this genus exhibit antifungal,larvicidal,antileishmanial,anti-inflammatory,antibiofilm,antimycobacterial,antioxidant,antimalarial,neuroinhibitory,and hemolytic *** addition,they have been shown to exhibit remarkable cytotoxic effects against several cancer cell lines which is likely related to their ability to inhibit electron transport as well as oxidative phosphorylation,and generate reactive oxygen species(ROS).their biological activities indicate potential utility in the development of new drugs,especially as active components in drug-carrier systems,against a broad spectrum of pathogens and ailments.

Resistance of Plasmodium falciparumto Sulfadoxine-Pyrimethamine (Dhfrand Dhps) and Artemisinin and Its Derivatives (K13): A Major Challenge for Malaria elimination in West Africa

the spread of resistance to antimalarials is a major public health problem worldwide and especially in sub-Saharan Africa where the highest morbidity and mortality rates are found with a critical scarcity of data on resistance. the objective of this review is to describe the mutations in the pfdhfr, pfdhps and k13 genes associated with resistance to artemisinin and Sulfadoxine-Pyrimethamine reported in West Africa during the decade 2007 to 2017 followed by a meta-analysis of their prevalence. A bibliographic search on the MeDLINe, PubMed, eMBASe and Sciences Direct databases made it possible to find 405 scientific papers relating to resistance to artemisinin and to Sulfadoxine-Pyrimethamine during the period 2007-2017. the analysis has concerned 217 scientific articles after the elimination of duplicates with 57 articles included in this review after the examination of titles and abstracts. the results of the present review show that the dhfr and dhps mutants are widespread in sub-Saharan Africa. Although, Kelch 13 mutants from Southeast Asia associated with artemisinin resistance are still absent in West Africa, studies have reported the presence of synonymous or non-K13 mutations correlated with a delay in parasite clearance in Burkina Faso (2.26%), Senegal (5.5%) and Togo (1.8%). the increased prevalence of dhfr and dhps mutants in West Africa could jeopardize its use for intermittent preventive treatment in the near future. Despite the absence of strains resistant to artemisinin-based combination therapy in the West African region, increased surveillance is necessary to prevent the rapid occurrence of possible resistance, especially in the context of synonymous or non-K13 mutations correlated with a delay in parasitic clearance.
