Direct simple shear tests are considered to be simple laboratory tests that are capable of imposing a cyclic loading that is analogous to that induced by earthquakes. A realistic evaluation of the test results demands a profound micromechanical investigation of specimens. Three-dimensional discrete element method models of a stacked-ring simple shear test were constructed, in which monotonic and cyclic loadings were applied under constant-volume conditions, and good agreement between the monotonic and cyclic macromechanical behaviors was noted. Micromechanical properties of specimens that were subjected to a cyclic loading are discussed in terms of lateral and intermediate principal stress development, fabric anisotropy, and principal stress rotation. The stress and strain states inside the specimen were investigated and it was shown that despite the uniform stress distribution inside the specimen, the volumetric strain distributes non-uniformly during loading and the non-uniformity grows with cycling, which leads to localized zones of dilative and contractive behavior.

Hydrates always are considered as a threat to petroleum industry due to the operational problems it can *** problems could result in reducing production performance or even production stoppage for a long *** this paper, we were intended to develop a LSSVM algorithm for prognosticating hydrate formation temperature(HFT) in a wide range of natural gas mixtures. A total number of 279 experimental data points were extracted from open literature to develop the LSSVM. The input parameters were chosen based on the hydrate structure that each gas species form. The modeling resulted in a robust algorithm with the squared correlation coefficients(R^2) of 0.9918. Aside from the excellent statistical parameters of the model, comparing proposed LSSVM with some of conventional correlations showed its supremacy, particularly in the case of sour gases with high H_2S concentrations, where the model surpasses all correlations and existing thermodynamic models. For detection of the probable doubtful experimental data, and applicability of the model, the Leverage statistical approach was performed on the data sets. This algorithm showed that the proposed LSSVM model is statistically valid for HFT prediction and almost all the data points are in the applicability domain of the model.

Braking system is one of the most critical parts in a vehicle,and one of the main components of this system is brake booster valve body which plays a significant role in safety standards of the *** working conditions under the hood of the vehicle necessitate the valve body to have some special *** component should have high mechanical strength and the ability to maintain this strength at elevated *** the other hand,lower weight and lower cost are always desirable in *** material selection for the valve body is very important and should satisfy the aforementioned *** order to select the best material for a large number of alternatives considering many different criteria,multi criteria decision making(MCDM) methods are used in this *** weighting of criteria is carried out by entropy and analytic hierarchy process(AHP) methods and a combination of these two techniques are used as the final ***,TOPSIS and VIKOR methods are used in this paper for selecting the best material for braking booster valve *** alternative materials were ranked using these methods and the results of the analysis were compared using Spearman’s rank ***-gf35(PET reinforced with 35 wt% glass fiber) was found to be the best material for the valve *** to the desirability of the results,the results of this study can be used in automotive industry in order to enhance the material selection process.

Following the recent paper(Teittinen et al 2019 New J. Phys. 21 123041), one can see that in general there is no simple relation between non-Markovianity and quantum speed limit. Here, we investigate the connection between quantum speed limit time and non-Markovianity of an atom in structured environments(reservoirs) whose dynamics is governed by an exact pseudomode master equation(Garraway 1997 Phys. Rev. A 55 2290). In particular, we find an inverse relation between them, which means that the non-Markovian feature of the quantum process leads to speedup of evolution. Thus, there is a link between quantum speedup and memory effects for specific cases of dynamical evolution. Our results might shed light on the relationship between the speedup of quantum evolution and the backflow of information from the environment to the system.

In order to determine water losses in irrigation canals,a systematic approach was developed,consisting of two main components:a seepage simulation model and a hydraulic simulation *** SEEP/W module of the Geo-Studio software was used to simulate the seepage rate,and the Hydrologic Engineering Center-River Analysis System(HEC-RAS)hydrodynamic model was used for hydraulic *** operation scenarios were designed to investigate all possible situations in daily operation of water distribution and delivery *** seepage simulation results show that the seepage losses were higher at the bottom and corners of the canal,because the hydraulic gradient was affected by the hydraulic *** hydraulic simulation results show that due to physical and management infrastructure(using non-automated and operator-based regulation structures),operational losses accounted for a significant volume of losses compared to seepage *** most operation scenarios,the maximum seepage loss was 10%,and the remaining 90%was related to operational *** is concluded that any factor(decrease or increase of inflow to the canal)that causes an increase or decrease of operational losses is ultimately a determining factor in reducing or increasing total ***,management approaches should be adopted to improve performance of the system and reduce losses,especially operational losses,by improving the operation methods of water level regulation and off-take structures.

One of the most important factors influencing on a tunnel blast efficiency is the proper design of blasting pattern. Among blasting parameters, blasthole diameter and tunnel face area are more significant so that any change in these parameters could finally affect on specific charge and specific drilling. There are mainly two groups of methods for tunnel blast design categorized based on the parallel cuts and angular cuts. In this research, a software for tunnel blast design was developed to analyze the effect and sensitiveness of blasthole diameter and the tunnel face area on blasting results in different blast design models. Using the software, it is quickly possible to determine specific charge, specific drilling and number of blastholes for each blast design model. The relations between both of blasthole diameters and the tunnel face area with the above parameters in different blast design models were then investigated to yield a set of equations with the highest correlations to compare the methods. The results showed that angular method requires more blasthole numbers than parallel method in similar condition(blasthole diameter and tunnel face area). Moreover, the specific charge values yielded by the two methods are approximately the same and very close together.

Application of Geochemistry and VNIR Spectroscopy in Mapping Heavy Metal Pollution of Stream Sediments in the Takab Mining Area, NW of Iran

This study considered the possibility of using visible and near infrared(VNIR) spectral absorption feature parameters(SAFPs) in predicting the concentration and mapping the distribution of heavy metals in sediments of the Takab area. In total, 60 sediment samples were collected along main streams draining from the mining districts and tailing sites, in order to measure the concentration of As, Co, V, Cu, Cr, Ni, Hg, Ti, Pb and Zn and the reflectance spectra(350–2500 nm). The quantitative relationship between SAFPs(Depth500 nm, R610/500 nm, R1344/778 nm, Area500 nm, Depth2200 nm, Area2200 nm, Asym2200 nm) and geochemical data were assessed using stepwise multiple linear regression(SMLR) and enter multiple linear regression(EMLR) methods. The results showed a strong negative correlation between Ni and Cr with Area2200 nm, a significant positive correlation between As and Asym2200 nm, Ni and Co with Depth2200 nm, as well as Co, V and total values with Depth500 nm. The EMLR method eventuated in a significant prediction result for Ni, Cr, Co and As concentrations based on spectral parameters, whereas the prediction for Zn, V and total value was relatively weak. The spatial distribution pattern of geochemical data showed that mining activities, along with the natural weathering of base metal occurrences and rock units, has caused high concentrations of heavy metals in sediments of the Sarough River tributaries.

Novel modified activated carbons （ACs） with enhanced adsorptive properties were obtained coating by chitosan （CS）, polyethylene glycol （PEG） and blends of the two polymers （0：1, 1：0, 1：1, 1：2 and 2：1 wt/wt） on ACs by an impregnation technique. The adsorption perfor- mances of the pristine, acidified and polymer-impregnated ACs were studied using methylene blue as a model adsorbate. The adsorbents were characterized using Four- ier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy and abrasion hardness tests. The average coating thicknesses were between 10 to 23 microns. The pore sizes, pore densities and pore capacities of the activated carbons increased as the wt-% PEG in the coating increased. The highest adsorption capacity （424.7 mg/g） was obtained for the chitosan-coated ACs and this adsorption was well described by the Langmuir isotherm model. The kinetic results were best described by the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The highest rate constant was obtained with the ACs modified with the CS：PEG （2：1） coating and this result was almost 2.6 times greater than that of the unmodified ACs. The CS/PEG impregnated ACs also displayed superior hardness （-90%）, compared to unmodified ACs （-85%）. Overall the chitosan had a greater effect on improving adsorption capacity whereas the polyethylene glycol enhanced the adsorption rate.
