This is a reference paper that attempts to use a completely different approach to analyze accidents. A model was developed for data collected from an accident rate questionnaire filled-in by laborers working for a reputable construction company in Kuwait. This questionnaire was designed to include information about human factors, as well as other factors such as work type, managerial factors, training, physical factors and the historical accident rate for each labor during his period of employment in this particular construction company, as well as his experience during his career life time. The collected data was split into a training set for model construction and a test for model verification. The training information was classified into a number of groups or clusters, the centroids of these clusters were subsequently used to generate a set of rules to develop a fuzzy engine, which can then predict and forecast the rate of accidents. The test cases were used to verify and validate the developed model. Some outcome and correlated results have been driven by the mode and illustrated in this paper.

In this paper a multi-statistics model of the impulse noise is presented. An impressive experimental noise data collection acquired from digital access loops provides the synthetic noise environment with the most convenient probability density functions. Internal and external impulse noise sources within communications copper lines are briefly surveyed. A wide-band noise measuring circuit is used to determine the impulse noise properties. Our model gives a full description of the impulse statistics in the time and frequency domains, enables generation of impulses with statistically appropriate both time and spectral characteristics. It is based on recent measurements and reflects the current statistics of impulse noise in digital networks, is based on wide-band measurements, agrees with empirical statistics from different access networks in different places.

X-Ray Absorption Spectroscopy (XAS) on the carbon K edge of carbon nanostructures (nanotubes, nanofibers, nanowalls) is reported here. They are grown on plain SiO2 (8 nm thick)/Si(100) substrates by a Plasma and Hot Filaments-enhanced Catalytic Chemical Vapor Deposition (PE HF CCVD) process. The morphology and the nature of these carbon nanostructures are characterized by SEM, TEM and Raman spectroscopy. According to conditions of catalyst preparation and DC HF CCVD process, carbon nanotubes (CNTs), carbon nanofibers (CNFs), carbon nanowalls (CNWs), carbon nanoparticles (CNPs) with different orientation of the graphene plans or shells can be prepared. From the angular dependence of the incident light and geometrical morphology of the nanostructures, wide variations of the C K-edge intensity of the transitions to the empty π* and σ* states occur. A full lineshape analysis of the XAS spectra has been carried out using a home-made software, allowing estimating the relative proportion of π* and σ* transitions. A geometrical model of the angular dependence with the incidence angle of the light and the morphology of the carbon nanostructures is derived. With normalization to the HOPG (Highly Oriented Pyrolytic Graphite graphite) reference case, a degree of alignment can be extracted which is representative of the localized orientation of the graphitic carbon π bonds, accounting not only for the overall orientation, but also for local defects like impurities incorporation, structural defects ... This degree of alignment shows good agreement with SEM observations. Thus CNTs films display degrees of alignment around 50%, depending on the occurrence of defects in the course of the growth, whereas no special alignment can be detected with CNFs and CNPs, and a weak one (about 20%) is detected on CNWs.

AIM: To compare the yield of adenomas between narrow band imaging and white light when using high definition/magnification. METHODS: This prospective, non-randomized comparative study was performed at the endoscopy unit of veteran affairs medical center in Phoenix, Arizona. Consecutive patients undergoing first average risk colorectal cancer screening colonoscopy were selected. Two experienced gastroenterologists performed all the procedures that were blinded to each other's findings. Demographic details were recorded. Data are presented as mean ± SEM. Proportional data were compared using the χ2 test and means were compared using the Student's t test. Tandem colonoscopy was performed in a sequential and segmental fashion using one of 3 strategies: white light followed by narrow band imaging [Group A: white light(WL) → narrow band imaging(NBI)]; narrow band imaging followed by white light(Group B: NBI → WL) and, white light followed by white light(Group C: WL → WL). Detection rate of missed polyps and adenomas were evaluated in all three groups. RESULTS: Three hundred patients were studied(100 in each Group). Although the total time for the colonoscopy was similar in the 3 groups(23.8 ± 0.7, 22.2 ± 0.5 and 24.1 ± 0.7 min for Groups A, B and C, respectively), it reached statistical significance between Groups B and C(P < 0.05). The cecal intubation time in Groups B and C was longer than for Group A(6.5 ± 0.4 min and 6.5 ± 0.4 min vs 4.9 ± 0.3 min; P < 0.05). The withdrawal time for Groups A and C was longer than Group B(18.9 ± 0.7 min and 17.6 ± 0.6min vs 15.7 ± 0.4 min; P < 0.05). Overall miss rate for polyps and adenomas detected in three groups during the second look was 18% and 17%, respectively(P = NS). Detection rate for polyps and adenomas after first look with white light was similar irrespective of the light used during the second look(WL → WL: 13.7% for polyps, 12.6% for adenomas; WL → NBI: 14.2% for polyps, 11.3% for adenomas).
