Role of ethnicity in social anxiety disorder: A cross-sectional survey among health science students

AIM: To investigate the influence of ethnicity in social anxiety disorder(SAD), and the relationship with symptom severity, depression and substance use or abuse, in health sciences' ***: This was a cross-sectional survey of 112 1st, 2nd and 3rd year students from the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at Stellenbosch University, Cape Town, South Africa. The self-reported Social Anxiety Spectrum questionnaire was used to assess for SAD. The Social phobia Inventory(SpIN) was adapted to a version called the E-SpIN(Ethnic-SpIN) in order to evaluate the effects of ethnicity. Two sub-questions per stem question were included to assess whether SAD symptoms in social interactions were ethnicity dependent. Substance use was assessed with the Alcohol UseDisorders Identification Test and Drug Use Disorders Identification Test, and depression with the Centre for Epidemiological Studies Depression ***: Of 112 students who completed the E-SpIN questionnaire, 54.4%(n = 61) met criteria for SAD, with significantly more females than males meeting criteria. Ethnicity had a significant effect on SAD symptomatology, but there was no effect of ethnicity on the rates of drug and alcohol abuse in students with and without SAD. Overall significantly more students with SAD met criteria for depression compared with students without the disorder. CONCLUSION: Among university students, SAD is prevalent regardless of whether interactions are with individuals of the same or different ethnic group. However, ethnicity may be an important determinant of social anxiety for some ethnic groups. SAD was significantly associated with major depression but not significantly associated with drug or alcohol abuse.

Lessons from microRNA Sequencing Using Illumina Technology

The numbers of reads generated by second-generation sequencing technologies permit to establish in a single sequencing lane multiple microRNA (miRNA) expression profiles from small RNA-derived cDNA libraries tagged by barcodes consisting of few bases. Multiplex sequencing allows sample size expansion and thus the statistical reliability of generated data. This allows the detection of discrete changes in miRNA expression levels that occur at the onset of cellular processes. With the development of the “by-amplification” strategy, tagging cDNA libraries is no more a source of technical variability. However, other specific features should be kept in mind when designing experiments aimed at profiling miRNA expression using Illumina sequencing technology, the most important being the substantial distortion between miRNA expression in sequencing data and the true miRNA abundancy. miRNAs of low expression in profiles may correspond to abundant miRNAs in samples and vice versa. We report here data obtained from rat cerebellum and liver that illustrate 1) the high 3’ adaptor dependency of miRNA expression profiles, 2) the impact of sample size when working with moderate (3 - 4 fold) changes of miRNA expression and 3) the impact of the statistical tools used to identify differentially expressed miRNAs.

Changes in Coupled Vibration Frequencies and Modes of Wall-Cavity Systems Induced by Stiffness Variation in the Structure

problems of fluid structure interactions are governed by a set of fundamental parameters. This work aims at showing through simple examples the changes in natural vibration frequencies and mode shapes for wall-cavity systems when the structural rigidity is modified. Numerical results are constructed using ANSYS software with triangular finite elements for both the fluid （2D acoustic elements） and the solid （plane stress） domains. These former results are compared to proposed analytical expressions, showing an alternative benchmark tool for the analyst. Very rigid wall structures imply in frequencies and mode shapes almost identical to those achieved for an acoustic cavity with Neumann boundary condition at the interface. In this case, the wall behaves as rigid and fluid-structure system mode shapes are similar to those achieved for the uncoupled reservoir case.

Objective: Although Angelica archangelica is a medicinal and aromatic plant with a long history of use for both medicinal and food purposes, there are no studies regarding the antineoplastic activity of its *** study aimed to evaluate the cytotoxicity and antitumor effects of the crude extract of A. archangelica root(CEAA) on breast ***: The cytotoxicity of CEAA against breast adenocarcinoma cells(4T1 and MCF-7) was evaluated by a 3-(4,5-dimethyl-2-thiazolyl)-2,5-diphenyl-2-H-tetrazolium bromide(MTT) assay. Morphological and biochemical changes were detected by Hoechst 33342/propidium iodide(pI) and annexin V/pI staining. Cytosolic calcium mobilization was evaluated in cells staining with FURA-4 NW. Immunoblotting was used to determine the effect of CEAA on anti-and pro-apoptotic proteins(Bcl-2 and Bax, respectively).The 4 T1 cell-challenged mice were used for in vivo ***: Using ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry analysis, angelicin, a constituent of the roots and leaves of A. archangelica, was found to be the major constituent of the CEAA evaluated in this study(73 mg/mL). The CEAA was cytotoxic for both breast cancer cell lines studied but not for human fibroblasts. Treatment of 4 T1 cells with the CEAA increased Bax protein levels accompanied by decreased Bcl-2 expression, in the presence of cleaved caspase-3 and cytosolic calcium mobilization, suggesting mitochondrial involvement in breast cancer cell death induced by the CEAA in this cell line. No changes on the Bcl-2/Bax ratio were observed in CEAA-treated MCF7 cells. Gavage administration of the CEAA(500 mg/kg) to 4T1 cell-challenged mice significantly decreased tumor growth when compared with untreated ***: Altogether, our data show the antitumor potential of the CEAA against breast cancer cells in vitro and in vivo. Further research is necessary to better elucidate the pharmacological application of the CEAA in breast cancer therapy.

A preliminary study of freshwater meiofaunal communities at Greenwich Island, South Shetland Islands, Antarctica

Meiofaunal communities of three small, shallow freshwater habitats sampled during the austral summer of 2013 in Greenwich Island, South Shetland Islands, Antarctica, are reported. Communities are dominated by tardigrades （85%）, nematodes （11%）, and rotifers （3%）. Collembola, Oligochaeta, crustacean larvae （nauplii） and unidentified organisms account for 0.3%. Total meiofaunal densities reach 11 770 ***^-2, with mean densities （***-2） of 1 365.83 ± 2 716.65 （Zone A）, 523.67 ± 1 166.48 （Zone B） and 72.17 ± 110.78 （Zone C）. Given the age of freshwater habitats, and the general lack of higher-tropbic level predatory taxa, those species we report are likely early stage colonizers, and these communities are at an early stage of ecological succession. Non-parametrical analysis revealed the main variables influencing meiofaunal density and distribution are related to granulometric characteristics of sediments and microphytobenthic biomass. There were close relationships between meiofaunal abundance and microphytobenthic biomass, which indicates that benthic microalgae significantly influence meiofaunal distribution. A strong correlation between nematode abundance and the percentage of silt, clay and carbon in the sediment was also shown by canonical correspondence analysis and Spearman rank correlation.

By decomposing a molecular precursor we fabricated a novel surface based on an aluminium/aluminiumoxide composite incorporating nanotopography gradient to address high-throughput and fast analysis method for studying stem cell differentiation by nanostructures. Depending on the topography of the nanostructures, mesenchymal stem cells exhibit a diverse proliferation and differentiation behavior.

Nosocomial Klebsiella variicola Infection in Neonatal Intensive Care: A New Emerging pathogen

Klebsiella variicola is a human pathogen that has been misidentified as K. pneumoniae. This misidentification has led to a lack of understanding of important clinical and biological aspects of this bacterial species. It is responsible for serious and potentially fatal infections, with a prevalence of multi-resistance to routine antibiotics. We present through three clinical observations, the case of three newborns having been hospitalized in the neonatal intensive care unit and whose evolution was complicated by the occurrence of a nosocomial infection in front of which a blood culture was done on blood agar, with a manual antibiogram on antibiotic disks, isolated the germ Klebsiella variicola. The management of the newborns was initially centered on non-invasive ventilation with a bi-antibiotic therapy based on carbapenem and amikacin for two newborns and switched to colymicin for the third case. Newborn follow-up was based on assessment of general condition, clinical signs of infection, as well as a biological control made of a blood count, a c-reactive protein, a complete ionogram, and a blood culture, every four days or if signs of clinical call. The evolution was favorable for two cases with good clinical and biological improvement, and complicated by death due to alveolar hemorrhage in the third case. Given the high pathogenicity of this germ, and the frequency of misidentification, it is crucial to know the clinical spectrum of Klebsiella variicola infections in neonatal intensive care units, in order to adapt the antibiotic therapy and to mitigate the fulminant evolution of this germ.

Study on relationship between acute gastrointestinal disease and Helicobacter pylori infections

Objective: To assess the relation between acute gastrointestinal disease and Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infections. Methods: Over the 18-month period, a total of 323 patients referred to three hospitals in Babol (north of Iran) were enrolled in this cross-sectional study. H. pylori status (rapid urease test), endoscopic findings in the patients, personal habits (smoking or alcohol intake) and administration of drugs, such as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) were analyzed using standard Chi-square test and multinomial logistic regression analysis. Results: Results showed that acute gastric ulcer patients had a significant association with alcohol (p=0.001, OR=6.183), opium (p=0.022, OR=2.823), smoking (p=0.016, OR=2.579) and NSAIDs (p=0.046, OR=2.071). However, patients with in acute duodenal ulcer have a significant association with opium (p=0.023, OR=2.326) and alcohol (p=0.003, OR=3.888). As well as, gastric cancer had significant association with alcohol (pp=0.012, OR=2.738), family history (p=0.005, OR=4.380) and gender (p≤0.05, OR=5.103). Conclusions: Current investigation shows that H. pylori infection, alcoholism, male gender, age and family history have an additive impact on the incidence of gastric cancer. In addition, alcoholism, opium usage, NSAIDs and family history have more impact on the incidence of acute gastric ulcer and acute duodenal ulcer in patients.
