We propose and demonstrate a reconfigurable and single-shot incoherent optical signal processing system for chirped microwave signal compression, using a programmable optical filter and a multiwavelength laser(MWL). The system is implemented by temporally modulating a specially shaped MWL followed by a suitable linear dispersive medium. A microwave dispersion value up to 1.33 ns/GHz over several GHz bandwidth is achieved based on this approach. Here we demonstrate a singleshot compression for different linearly chirped microwave signals over several GHz bandwidth. In addition, the robustness of the proposed system when input RF signals are largely distorted is also discussed.

Tumour induced osteomalacia(TIO) is a rare and often unrecognized cause of hypophosphatemia. We report on a case of TIO due to a hemangiopericytoma originating from the left nasal sinus. The patient was a 55-year-old male with a 3-year history of left hip pain and an undisplaced left hip fracture. Biochemical testing demonstrated low levels of serum phosphate and serum 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D, and an elevated level of fibroblast growth factor 23. Octreotide scanning demonstrated uptake in the left nasal sinus area and a computed tomography scan revealed a left nasal sinus mass. The patient underwent surgical resection of the mass and histology was consistent with a sinonasal hemangiopericytoma. His serum phosphate levels normalized almost immediately after surgery and he had complete resolution of hip pain. Our case highlights the importance of considering TIO when assessing patients with low serum phosphate.

The aim of the study was to test the interaction between Thr and Gly in low crude protein(CP)diets in 7 to 28 d broilers on production performance and plasma metabolites.A total of 2,040 broilers were allocated to 17 treatments.A positive control(PC)diet(20.5%CP)was formulated to be adequate in dietary Thr and Gly.A negative control(NC)diet(18.5%CP,deficient in Thr and Gly)was supplemented with crystalline L-Thr and Gly to obtain a 4 Thr×4 Gly *** Thr was tested at an apparent faecal digestibility(AFD)Thr-to-Lys ratio,which was 55%,58%,61%or 64%,and dietary Gly was tested at an AFD(Gly+Ser)-to-Lys ratio,which was 135%,142%,149%or 156%.Plasma samples were collected at 28 *** low CP diet,formulated at 64%Thr and 156%Gly,resulted in a higher body weight gain(BWG)(P<0.01)and similar feed conversion ratio(FCR)as the high CP treatment(PC).FCR was improved(P<0.001)by L-Thr *** response to dietary Thr was significant for feed intake(FI),BWG and FCR(P<0.01).A near-significant interaction for Thr×Gly was observed for FI and BWG(Plinear=0.091 and P=0.074,respectively).Gly did not affect production *** interaction between Thr×Gly on plasma free AA level was observed(P<0.05).Free AA concentration in plasma linearly decreased with increase in AFD Thr-to-Lys ratio,and increased with increase in AFD(Gly+Ser)-to-Lys *** uric acid concentration was higher in PC than in all of the other diets,and plasma triglyceride concentration was decreased by L-Thr supplementation,but not by *** conclusion,Gly was not limiting for growth at low dietary CP level unless Thr was deficient,showing that adequate amounts of Thr in broiler diets can overcome marginal supply of Gly and Ser and allow reduction of dietary CP from 20.5%to 18.5%for broilers from 7 to 28 d of age.

AIM To explore the relationship between collagen proportionate area(CPA) and portal hypertension-related clinical manifestations in alcoholic liver disease(ALD).METHODS Retrospective study with chart review of patients with ALD adressed to our center between January 2012 and December 2013 for a transjugular liver biopsy(TJLB) and hepatic hemodynamic study. Patients were included if they met the following criteria:(1) Medical indication for a liver biopsy in the setting of ALD;(2) recent(< 15 d) clinical, radiological, endoscopic and biological data available; and(3) estimated follow-up of at least 6 mo. Liver tissue from cirrhotic subjects obtained from transjugular liver biopsies was stained with Picro Sirius red and computer-assisted digital image analysis to determine fibrosis density using CPA was performed. RESULTS We included 61 patients with alcoholic ALD, subdivided in 41 active alcohol drinkers and 20 durably abstinent patients. Nine healthy liver donors served as controls. Mean CPA in patients with ALD was 7.1%, with no difference between active drinkers and abstinent patients(P = 0.17). Using a fibrosis density cutoff of 5%, we observed a positive correlation between high fibrosis density and the hepatic venous pressure gradient(HVPG) only in active drinkers(P = 0.02). At 12-mo of follow-up, in the group of active alcohol drinkers, patients reaching a composite outcome showed a higher HVPG value as compared to those who did not(18.5 mm Hg vs 14.5 mm Hg P < 0.04) whereas CPA values were similar(6.9% vs 11%, P = 0.23).CONCLUSION In active alcoholic ALD, CPA correlates to portal pressure but only HVPG predicts clinical events, pointing to the role of alcohol as a modulator of portal hypertension.

Many neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease, are characterised by the accumulation of misfolded protein deposits in the brain, leading to a progressive destabilisation of the neuronal network and neuronal death. Among the proteins that can abnormally accumulate are tau and α-synuclein, which can propagate in a prion-like manner and which upon aggregation, represent the most common intracellular proteinaceous lesions associated with neurodegeneration. For years it was thought that these intracellular proteins and their accumulation had no immediate relationship with extracellular homeostasis pathways such as the glymphatic clearance system;however, mounting evidence has now suggested that this is not the case. The involvement of the glymphatic system in neurodegenerative disease is yet to be fully defined;however, it is becoming increasingly clear that this pathway contributes to parenchymal solute clearance. Importantly, recent data show that proteins prone to intracellular accumulation are subject to glymphatic clearance, suggesting that this system plays a key role in many neurological disorders. In this review, we provide a background on the biology of tau and α-synuclein and discuss the latest findings on the cell-to-cell propagation mechanisms of these proteins. Importantly, we discuss recent data demonstrating that manipulation of the glymphatic system may have the potential to alleviate and reduce pathogenic accumulation of propagation-prone intracellular cytotoxic proteins. Furthermore, we will allude to the latest potential therapeutic opportunities targeting the glymphatic system that might have an impact as disease modifiers in neurodegenerative diseases.
