Beta-blocker use and risk of symptomatic bradyarrhythmias： a hospital-based case-control study

Objective To investigate the risk factors of symptomatic bradyarrhythrnias in relation to β-blockers use. Methods A hospital-based case-control study [228 patients： 108 with symptomatic bradyarrhythmias （cases） and 120 controls] was conducted in Sultanah Aminah Hospital, Malaysia between January 2011 and January 2014. Results The mean age was 61.1 ~ 13.3 years with a majority of men （68.9%）. Cases were likely than control to be older, hypertensive, lower body mass index and concomitant use of rate-controlling drugs （such as digoxin, verapamil, diltiazem, ivabradine or amiodarone）. Significantly higher level of serum potassium, urea, creatinine and lower level of estimated glomerular filtration rate （eGFR） were observed among cases as compared to controls. On univariate analysis among patients on β-blockers, older age （crude OR： 1.07; 95% CI： 1.03-1.11, P = 0.000）, hypertension （crude OR： 5.6; 95% CI： 1.51-20.72, P = 0.010）, lower sodium （crude OR： 0.04; 95% CI： 0.81-0.99, P = 0.036）, higher potassium （crude OR： 2.36; 95% CI： 1.31-4.26, P = 0.004） and higher urea （crude OR： 1.23; 95% CI： 1.11-1.38, P = 0.000） were associated with increased risk of symptomatic bradyarrhythmias; eGFR was inversely and significantly associated with symptomatic bradyarrhythmias in both ＇β-blockers＇（crude OR： 0.97; 95% CI： 0.964）.98, P = 0.000） and ＇non-β-blockers＇（crude OR： 0.99; 95% CI： 0.97-0.99, P = 0.023） arms. However, eGFR was not significantly associated with symptomatic bradyarrhythmias in the final model of both ＇β-blockers＇（adjusted OR： 0.98; 95% CI： 0.96-0.98, P = 0.103） and ＇non-p-blockers＇（adjusted OR： 0.99; 95% CI： 0.97-1.01, P = 0.328） arms. Importantly, older age was a significant predictor of symptomatic bradyarrhythmias in the ＇β-blockers＇ as compared to the ＇non-β-blockers＇ arms （adjusted OR： 1.09; 95% CI： 1.03-1.15, P = 0.003 vs. adjusted OR： 1.03; 95% CI： 0.98-1.09, P = 0.232, respectively）. Tomato mottle mosaic virus(ToMMV), an economically important species of the genus Tobamovirus, causes significant loss in yield and quality of tomato fruits. Here, we identified the Shandong isolate of ToMMV(ToMMV-SD) collected from symptomatic tomato fruits in Weifang, Shandong Province of China. ToMMV-SD caused symptoms such as severe mosaic, mottling, and necrosis of tomato leaves, yellow spot and necrotic lesions on tomato fruits. The obtained full genome of ToMMV-SD was 6 399 nucleotides(accession number MW373515) and had the highest identity of 99.5% with that of isolate SC13-051 from the United States of America at the genomic level. The infectious clone of ToMMV-SD was constructed and induced clear mosaic and necrotic symptoms onto Nicotiana benthamiana leaves. Several commercial tomato cultivars, harboring Tm-2~2 resistance gene, and pepper cultivars, containing L resistance gene, were susceptible to ToMMV-SD. Plants of Solanum melongena(eggplant) and Brassica pekinensis(napa cabbage) showed mottling symptoms, while N. tabacum cv. Zhongyan 100 displayed latent infection. ToMMV-SD did not infect plants of N. tabacum cv. Xanthi NN, Brassica rapa ssp. chinensis(bok choy), Raphanus sativus(radish), Vigna unguiculata cv. Yuanzhong 28-2(cowpea), or Tm-2~2 transgenic N. benthamiana. A quintuplex RT-PCR system differentiated ToMMV from tomato mosaic virus, tomato brown rugose fruit virus, tobacco mosaic virus, and tomato spotted wilt virus, with the threshold amount of 0.02 pg. These results highlight the threat posed by ToMMV to tomato and pepper cultivation and offer an efficient detection system for the simultaneous detection of four tobamoviruses and tomato spotted wilt virus infecting tomato plants in the field.

Prediction of methane production performances based on determination of organic components for different vegetable wastes

The rapid development of the economy has led to rapid consumption of fossil fuels,which results in extremely serious environmental *** energy has been accepted as a way to reduce the usage of fossil fuels due to its cleanliness and *** this study,vegetable wastes(VWs),an abundant kind of biomass resource,were treated by anaerobic digestion(AD)to be converted into *** total solids(TS),volatile solids(VS),elemental contents,and organic components of 17 kinds of typical VWs were systematically *** methane production performances were then measured and ranged from 120.1 mL/g VS(for pepper stem)to 377.7 mL/g VS(for bok choy).To easily and quickly predict the methane yields of VWs,a curvilinear relationship between different organic compositions(e.g.,cellulose,hemicellulose,lignin,non-structural carbohydrate,protein,and VFA contents)and methane production was established and proved to be a useful tool for methane *** kinetic models(first-order model,Fitzhugh model,Cone model,modified Gompertz model)were applied to simulate the process of AD,and Cone and modified Gompertz models were shown to describe the AD process *** study will not only provide basic data about the characteristics and methane production of 17 kinds of VWs but also contribute a method for predicting the methane yields of vegetable wastes,which is also valuable in future agro-industrial applications.
