Relationships between Pathological Patterns and Vocal Qualities Estimated by Acoustic Parameters

Objective： To examine whether vocal characteristics estimated by acoustic parameters were associated with phlegm, yin deficiency, or cold-heat patterns. Methods： A total of 75 college students （males：females = 53：22） aged 19-24 years were enrolled in this study. Each subject was asked to complete the phlegm pattern questionnaire （PPQ）, yin deficiency questionnaire （YDQ） and cold-heat questionnaire （CHQ）. For the acoustic analysis, each subject was asked to produce a sustained vowel sound （/a/） for 3 s to be used to calculate acoustic parameters. Then, habitual fundamental frequency （F0）, jitter, shimmer, F0 tremor, mean F0, standard deviation of F0, maximum F0, minimum F0, normalized noise energy, harmonic-to-noise ratio, signal-to-noise ratio, amplitude tremor, and power ratio were calculated using the Dr. Speech software. Finally, four hierarchical regression models with pattern questionnaire scores as dependent variables were formed to examine which factors among acoustic parameters, sex, and age were predictive of those pattern scores. Results： PPQ, YDQ, heat, and cold pattern scores all formed significant regression model equations and the adjusted R2 values were 0.281, 0.164, 0.156, and 0.170, respectively. There were aging effects in the PPQ and YDQ models （standardized β =0.199, 0.271, respectively）. Vocal tremor-related Fo tremor and vocal ringing-related power ratio parameters were associated with PPQ and YDQ scores. Gender was directly predictive of PPQ and indirectly moderated the relationship between power ratio and YDQ score. Vocal pitch- related habitual F0 and mean F0 were associated with heat and cold scores. These results indicate that the vocal qualities of phlegm- and yin deficiency-susceptible subjects tend to be ringing and less tremorous, and those of heat- and cold-susceptible subjects tend to be high-pitched. Coffee consumption and risk of type 2 diabetes mellitus in Asians:A meta-epidemiological study of population-based cohort studies

BACKGROUND Previous systematic reviews have consistently reported that coffee consumption has a preventive effect on the occurrence of type 2 diabetes mellitus(T2DM).However,further evaluations between coffee consumption and the risk of T2DM in Asian populations are *** To conduct a meta-epidemiological study on systematic reviews evaluating the association between coffee consumption and the risk of T2DM in Asian *** The selection criterion was defined as a population-based prospective cohort study evaluating the association between coffee consumption and the risk of T2DM in Asian populations,reporting the adjusted relative risk(RR)and its 95%confidence interval(CI)for potential confounders.A fixed-effect model metaanalysis was applied to calculate the summary RR and its 95%CI in less than 50%of the I2 value indicating the level of heterogeneity.A two-stage fixed-effects doseresponse meta-analysis(DRMA)was performed to calculate the risk per unit dose(a cup per day).RESULTS A total of seven studies were selected in this meta-epidemiological *** risk of T2DM in Asian populations was significantly reduced in the highest to the lowest dose group(summary RR=0.73,95%CI:0.66-0.82;I2 value=0.0%).The DRMA showed that drinking one cup of coffee per day reduced the risk of T2DM in Asian populations by 8%(RR=0.92,95%CI:0.90-0.95).CONCLUSION These findings support the conclusion that coffee consumption has a protective effect on the occurrence of T2DM in Asian men and women.

Effect of friction on the contact stress of a coated polymer gear

Polymer gears are used extensively in various ***,durability issues have been emerging because of friction at gear tooth contact *** extend the lifetime of polymer gears,a low-frictional coating has been considered as a possible *** this study,a finite element simulation method was performed to investigate the contact stress between a pair of coated polymer *** simulation included various friction coefficients(COFs)for studying the effects of friction during the *** results revealed that the friction causes the contact stress to shift over the roll angle,which is attributed to the direction of the sliding friction based on a free-body *** also investigated the effects of coating and found that a thin coating has little effect on the bulk deformation behavior of the ***,the stress distribution in the coating at the pitch point was investigated as the COF *** zero friction,three notable stress regions were observed:1)the center of the surface,2)the end of the contact,and 3)the overall contact *** COF was increased in the micro-slip region of the contact interface,both tensile and compressive stresses in the coating *** study provides significant aid to engineers for understanding the stress response of the coating applied to polymer gears to achieve an optimal design.

Gait Optimization of a Quadruped Robot Using Evolutionary Computation

Evolutionary Computation(EC)has strengths in terms of computation for gait ***,conventional evolutionary algorithms use typical gait parameters such as step length and swing height,which limit the trajectory deformation for optimization of the foot ***,the quantitative index of fitness convergence is *** this paper,we perform gait optimization of a quadruped robot using foot placement perturbation based on *** proposed algorithm has an atypical solution search range,which is generated by independent manipulation of each placement that forms the foot trajectory.A convergence index is also introduced to prevent premature cessation of *** conventional algorithm and the proposed algorithm are applied to a quadruped robot;walking performances are then compared by gait *** the two algorithms exhibit similar computation rates,the proposed algorithm shows better fitness and a wider search *** evolutionary tendency of the walking trajectory is analyzed using the optimized results,and the findings provide insight into reliable leg trajectory design.

Mining fine-grained sequential travel patterns from social geo-tagged photos

A huge amount of geo-tagged photos that contains broad knowledge about travel behaviors of human is generated and posted on social photo-sharing sites. In literature, many studies about mining travel patterns from geo-tagged social photos have been proposed. However, the existing studies lack of a comprehensive system to mine fine-grained travel patterns by utilizing extensions of sequential pattern mining. We consider the following questions for San Francisco City, CA, USA: 1) What are the popular travel routes for tourists if they have only four hours or eight hours for visiting? 2) Which POIs do international tourists prefer to visit after visiting Golden Gate Bridge? 3) Are there any differences in travel behavior between American tourists and international tourists, between male American tourists and female American tourists, between male international tourists and female international tourists? To address these questions, we define and implement a novel framework to mine fine-grained travel patterns from geo-tagged photos of a tourist destination.

Effect of Ni Contents on the Microstructure and Mechanical Properties of Martensitic Stainless Steel Guide Roll by Centrifugal Casting

A novel process based on centrifugal casting was developed to produce martensitic stainless steel for guideroll materials. Centrifugal casting provides a lower production cost and less of the thermal cracking defects which normally occur in the overlaid welding process. In this study, the effects of Ni on the microstructure and mechanical properties of martensitic stainless steel were investigated. The results show that the addition of Ni resulted in a decrease in the volume fraction of delta ferrite and an increase in the volume fraction of the retained austenite, respectively. Moreover, a tensile strength of 1600 MPa with an elongation of 4% were obtained after tempering at 500℃ for 2 h. These values were higher than those obtained by using the conventional overlaid process.

Broadcast-Based Spatial Queries

Indexing techniques have been developed for wireless data broadcast environments, in order to conserve the scarce power resources of the mobile clients. However, the use of interleaved index segments in a broadcast cycle increases the average access latency for the clients. In this paper, the broadcast-based spatial query processing methods （BBS） are presented for the location-based services. In the BBS, broadcasted data objects are sorted sequentially based on their locations, and the server broadcasts the location dependent data along with an index segment. Then, a sequential prefetehing and caching scheme is designed to reduce the query response time. The performance of this scheme is investigated in relation to various environmental variables, such as the distributions of the data objects, the average speed of the clients and the size of the service area.

Full‑Fiber Auxetic‑Interlaced Yarn Sensor for Sign‑Language Translation Glove Assisted by Artificial Neural Network

Yarn sensors have shown promising application prospects in wearable electronics owing to their shape adaptability, good flexibility, and weavability. However, it is still a critical challenge to develop simultaneously structure stable, fast response, body conformal, mechanical robust yarn sensor using full microfibers in an industrial-scalable manner. Herein, a full-fiber auxetic-interlaced yarn sensor(AIYS) with negative Poisson’s ratio is designed and fabricated using a continuous, mass-producible, structure-programmable, and low-cost spinning technology. Based on the unique microfiber interlaced architecture, AIYS simultaneously achieves a Poisson’s ratio of-1.5, a robust mechanical property(0.6 c N/dtex), and a fast train-resistance responsiveness(0.025 s), which enhances conformality with the human body and quickly transduce human joint bending and/or stretching into electrical signals. Moreover, AIYS shows good flexibility, washability, weavability, and high repeatability. Furtherly, with the AIYS array, an ultrafast full-letter sign-language translation glove is developed using artificial neural network. The sign-language translation glove achieves an accuracy of 99.8% for all letters of the English alphabet within a short time of 0.25 s. Furthermore, owing to excellent full letter-recognition ability, real-time translation of daily dialogues and complex sentences is also demonstrated. The smart glove exhibits a remarkable potential in eliminating the communication barriers between signers and non-signers.
