Hybrid algorithm for modeling of fluid-structure interaction in incompressible, viscous flows

The objective of this paper is to present and to validate a new hybrid coupling （HC） algorithm for modeling of fluid-structure interaction （FSI） in incompressible, viscous flows. The HC algorithm is able to avoid numerical instability issues associated with artificial added mass effects, which are often encountered by standard loosely coupled （LC） and tightly coupled （TC） algorithms, when modeling the FSI response of flexible structures in incompressible flow. The artificial added mass effect is caused by the lag in exchange of interfacial displacements and forces between the fluid and solid solvers in partitioned algorithms. The artificial added mass effect is much more prominent for light/flexible struc- tures moving in water, because the fluid forces are in the same order of magnitude as the solid forces, and because the speed at which numerical errors propagate in an incom- pressible fluid. The new HC algorithm avoids numerical instability issues associated with artificial added mass effects by embedding Theodorsen＇s analytical approximation of the hydroelastic forces in the solution process to obtain better initial estimates of the displacements. Details of the new HC algorithm are presented. Numerical validation studies are shown for the forced pitching response of a steel and a plastic hydrofoil. The results show that the HC algorithm is able to converge faster, and is able to avoid numerical insta- bility issues, compared to standard LC and TC algorithms, when modeling the transient FSI response of a plastic hydrofoil. Although the HC algorithm is only demonstrated for a NACA0009 hydrofoil subject to pure pitching motion, the method can be easily extended to model general 3-D FSI response and stability of complex, flexible structures in turbulent, incompressible, multiphase flows.

Complete remission of advanced hepatocellular carcinoma by sorafenib: A case report

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the fifth most common malignant disease worldwide, and curative treatment remains difficult because the majority of cases are diagnosed in the advanced stage. Sorafenib is the only known effective systemic treatment, but patients rarely achieve complete remission (CR). A 66-year-old man with a history of alcoholic liver cirrhosis with a diagnosis of advanced HCC, was initially treated with transarterial chemoembolization on four occasions. However, the disease progressed with portal vein thrombosis. Therefore, sorafenib was started, and 4 mo later, the patient achieved CR. The treatment was continued for 12 mo, and CR was maintained up to 4 mo after sorafenib discontinuation.

Improved thermal performance of a hydronic radiant panel heating system by the optimization of tube shapes

The thermal performance enhancement of the hydronic radiant floor heating system by tube shape refinements is investigated in this *** analytical and detailed numerical modelings are carried out to predict the performance of the radiant *** the simple analytical model briefly investigates the possibility of the effect of the tube shape improvement with the parametric analysis,the commercial computational fluid dynamics(CFD) code(Ansys/CFX) is used to perform the detailed 3D analysis under different tube shape *** fin thickness,the number of fins,and the tube thermal conductivity turn out to have significant effects on the radiant system *** potential energy saving impacts of the tube shape refinements are also *** tube shape improvement turns out to increase the floor surface temperature and to decrease the hot water temperature drop across the system,resulting in heating energy savings.

Combustion Characteristics of Solid Refuse Fuels from Different Waste Sources

In the production(as co-fuel or alone)of solid refuse fuel(SRF),knowledge about the characteristics of the raw materials is required for an ecofriendly and effective combustion *** are commonly produced by drying combustible waste and removing incombustible matter,resulting in a higher combustibility as compared to the original ***,the characteristics of SRFs may highly vary depending on where and from which materials they were ***,we investigated the characteristics of various SRFs using thermogravimetric analysis(TGA).As a TGA sample is commonly small,on the scale of milligrams,and,unlike homogeneous fuels,SRFs are heterogeneous,individual SRF samples analysed with this method may not represent the bulk material,and sample properties may vary significantly between ***,we further performed combustion experiments using a small-scale combustor and sample sizes from 1 to 10 *** optimise SRF combustor design and determine the SRF characteristics,proximate,elemental,heating value,TG,and differential thermogravimetric analyses were conducted,and weight losses and gas concentrations at different temperatures were measured upon *** lower heating values of the three analysed SRFs were 20,976,16,873,and 19,762 kJ/kg,and their Cl contents were 0.89,0.95,and 1.27 wt.%(legal criterion[Cl]<2.0 wt.%).TGA and small combustor experiments showed that complete weight loss was achieved below 500°***,CO was detected until 620°C.

Synthesis of a Rod-rod Diblock Copolymer, Poly (3-hexylthiophene)-block-poly(furfuryl isocyanate), through the Anionic Polymerization with an Oxyanionic Macroinitiator

A rod-rod diblock copolymer (diBCP), poly(3-hexylthiophene)-block-poly(furfuryl isocyanate)(P3HT-b-PFIC), was synthesized through the anionic polymerization with an oxyanionic macroinitiator of P3HT. The properties of the diBCP (molecular weight, dispersity, composition, thermal stability, UV-visible absorption, and thin film morphology) were determined by various analytical methods. P3HT-b-PFIC was blended with C60 in a toluene solution to prepare a thin film of binary electron donor/acceptor system. Such blending enabled partial conjugation of the two components by the Diels-Alder reaction between furan and C60 at 60℃ for 3 h;the mixture was then spin-cast as a thin film, and annealed at 250℃ for 24 h. Tapping-mode atomic force microscopy (AFM) revealed that P3HT and C60 domains had nanoscale interfaces without a large phase segregation. This result indicated that the microphase separation of C60-functionalized P3HT-b-PFIC preserved even at high temperature provided free C60 molecules with channels to diffuse on the sides of P3HT domain, thus preventing the macroscopic crystallization of free C60 through the interfacial stabilization.

Nonalcoholic steatohepatitis（NASH） is one of the most common liver diseases and a major cause of liver fibrosis worldwide.r-Aminobutyric acid（GABA） is one of the most abundant inhibitory neurotransmitters in the central nervous ***,it has been reported that GABAergic signaling pathways are found in various non-neuronal tissues including the immune system and play a functional *** the present study,we investigated whether administration of GABA has effects on NASH through its immunomodulatory *** test this hypothesis,C57BL/6 mice were fed a methionine-choline-deficient（MCD） diet for 8 *** four weeks into MCD feeding,mice were provided with plain water（control） or water containing 2 mg/mL of GABA for the subsequent 4 *** this MCD diet-induced NASH model,we found that mice receiving GABA showed more severe steatohepatitis and liver fibrosis than control *** increased liver damage was confirmed by higher levels of serum alanine transaminase（ALT） and aspartate aminotransferase（AST） compared to the control *** accordance with increased liver steatohepatitis,NASH-related and inflammatory gene expression（collagen al,tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase-1,TNF-α） in the liver was markedly increased in GABA-treated ***,GABA directly enhanced production of inflammatory cytokines including IL-6 and TNF-α in LPS activated RAW macrophage cells and increased TIB-73 hepatocyte *** effects were abolished when GABA was treated with bicuculline,a competitive antagonist of GABA *** results suggest that oral administration of GABA may be involved in changes of the liver immune milieu and conferred detrimental effects on NASH progression.

Sliding Wear Behavior of Plasma Sprayed Zirconia Coating on Cast Aluminum against Silicon Carbide Ceramic

The sliding wear behaviors of ZrO2-22 wt pct MgO （MZ） and ZrO2-8 wt pct Y2O3（YZ） coatings deposited on a cast aluminum alloy with bond layer （NiCrCoAlY） by plasma spray were investigated under dry test conditions at room temperature. Under all load conditions, the wear mechanisms of the MZ and YZ coatings were almost the same. The material transfer and pullout were involved in the wear process of the studied coatings under the test conditions. The wear rate of the MZ coating was less than that of the YZ coating. While increasing the normal load, the wear rates of the MZ and YZ coatings increased. SEM was used to examine the worn surfaces and to elucidate likely wear mechanisms. Energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy （EDX） analysis of the worn surfaces indicated that material transfer occurred in the direction from the SiC ball to the disk. Fracture toughness had a significant influence on the wear performance of the coatings. It was suggested that the material transfer played an important role in the wear behavior.

Variation Patterns of NLR Clusters in Arabidopsis thaliana Genomes

The nucleotide-binding domain and leucine-rich repeat(NLR)gene family is highly expanded in the plant lineage with extensive sequence and structure *** survey the landscape of NLR expansion,we mined the published long-read data generated by the resistance gene enrichment sequencing of 64 diverse Arabidopsis thaliana *** found that the hot spots of massive multi-gene NLR cluster expansion did not typically span the whole cluster;instead,they were restricted to a handful of,or only one,dominant radiation(s).All sequences in such a radiation were distinct from other genes in the cluster but not from each other in the clade,making it difficult to assign trustworthy reference-based orthologies when multiple reference genes were present in the ***,NLR genes can be broadly divided into two types:radiating or high-fidelity,where high-fidelity genes are well conserved and well separated from other clades.A similar distinction could be made for NLR clusters,depending on whether cluster size was determined primarily by extensive radiation or the presence of numerous high-fidelity *** also identified groups of well-conserved NLR clades that were missing from the Columbia-0 reference *** suggests that the classification of NLRs using gene IDs from a single reference accession can rarely capture all major paralogs in a cluster accurately and representatively and that a referenceagnostic perspective is required to properly characterize these additional ***,we present a quantitative visualization method for differentiating these situations in a given clade of interest.

CaCO_3 film synthesis from ladle furnace slag: morphological change, new material properties, and Ca extraction efficiency

A rapidly air-cooled ladle furnace slag(RA-LFS), which is a type of steelmaking slag discharged from a steel mill, was used to synthesize CaCO_3 film. The CaCO_3 film with 35 cm^2 of surface area was synthesized under atmospheric conditions, and the surface morphology of the CaCO_3 films was changed by using additives(CaCl_2 and ethylene glycol). Especially, the addition of CaCl_2 changed the surface morphology of CaCO_3 film with pore and induced new material properties, such as water adsorption. The(012) face of CaCO_3 film(calcite) was rapidly decreased by the addition of CaCl_2. The major components of RA-LFS were calcium(type of CaO, 53.9 wt%) and aluminum(type of Al_2 O_3, 37.9 wt%), and the major crystal phases of RA-LFS were C_3 S, C_(12) A_7, and C_3 A. The calcium extraction efficiency of RA-LFS was significantly increased after the CaCO_3 film synthesis. The material properties(hardness and elastic modulus) and the thermal characteristics of the CaCO_3 films were analyzed by nano-indentation and thermogravimetry–differential thermal analysis. The synthesized CaCO_3 films from RA-LFS and Ca(OH)_2(reagent) showed similarities in terms of their material properties and the decomposition temperature.
