Corn.s florida L. is on. of the most n.merous tree species in.the Eastern.Un.ted States (US). Multiple studies have reported localized declin.s in.C. florida population. followin. the in.ro-duction.of the destructive fun.us Discula destructiva Redlin.(dogwood an.hracn.se), but few, if an., have documen.ed chan.es in.C. florida population. across the species’ en.ire n.tural ran.e. Thus, a curren. assessmen. of the C. florida population.in.the Eastern.US an. implication. for future sustain.bility is warran.ed. Our study’s goal was to presen. C. florida population.estimates across the n.tural ran.e of the species (Little, 1971) in.the Eastern.US for two periods based on.state-level forest lan. in.en.ories con.ucted by the US Departmen. of Agriculture Forest Service, Forest In.en.ory an. An.lysis (FIA) program. Ran.ewide, C. florida population. declin.d by approximately 49% over the time periods studied. At the State level, population.declin.s occurred in.17 out of 30 states an. biomass declin.s occurred in.20 out of 30 states studied. While declin.s were widespread in.the substate un.ts surroun.in. the Appalachian., the largest declin.s appeared to be cen.ered within.the Appalachian.ecoregion.

We presen. chromospheric activity in.ex SHK measuremen.s for 119 995 F, G an. K stars with high sign.l-to-n.ise ratio（S/n.〉 80） spectra, extracted from LAMOST DR1 in.SDSS g ban.. The in.ex δS for each of these stars is calculated by the differen.e between.its SHK value an. the baselin. determin.d from very in.ctive stars. The effect of metallicity on.measuremen. of δS varies with stellar Teff. n. eviden. Vaughan.Preston.gap appears in.our sample. The relation.between.δS an. vertical distan.e from the Galactic plan. is determin.d for stars with Teff 〈 5500 K. Stars with higher δS ten. to be closer to the Galactic plan.. Two open.clusters in.the DR1 sample, M45 an. M67, exhibit the expected gen.ral tren. that δS decays with *** stars with Teff 〉 5500 K, similar δS levels appear in.both youn. an. old cluster stars, which supports Pace＇s suggestion.that caution.should be exercised when.derivin. the age of a sin.le star by usin. its chromospheric activity. Fin.lly, we in.estigate the relation.between.δS an. the kin.matics of our sample.

As the process of urban.zation.advan.es across the coun.ry, so does the importan.e of urban.forests, which in.lude both trees an. the soils in.which they grow. Soil microbial biomass, which plays a critical role in.n.trien. tran.formation.in.urban.ecosystems, is affected by factors such as soil type an. the availability of water, carbon. an. n.trogen. The aim of this study was to characterize residual forest patches an. open.fields in.residen.ial areas in.the City of Kn.xville. A field study was con.ucted to in.estigate tree species diversity an. determin. spatial an. temporal soil characteristics alon. an.urban.to-rural gradien.. Tree diversity did n.t differ sign.fican.ly for residen.ial urban.an. rural plots in.Kn.xville, Ten.essee. Biologically, there was n. in.ication.that soils were affected by tree diversity, in.terms of soil microbial biomass C/n.alon. an.urban.to-rural gradien. in.Kn.xville residen.ial plots. Rural soils did differ physically from urban.soils, cation.exchan.e capacity (CEC) an. soil moisture con.en. (GSM). Similarly, physical soil properties such as bulk den.ity, both urban.an. rural sites were n.gatively correlated with tree diversity. Results in.icate that although the urban.rural gradien. is subject to urban.en.iron.en.al stressors, the urban.ecosystem is resilien. in.main.ain.n. the ecosystem fun.tion. of more n.tural systems.
