Initial experience from a combination of systemic and regional chemotherapy in the treatment of patients with nonresectable cholangiocellular carcinoma in the liver

AIM: In nonresectable cholangiocellular carcinoma (CCC)therapeutic options are limited. Recently, systemic chemotherapy has shown response rates of up to 30%.Additional regional therapy of the arterially hyper vascularized hepatic tumors might represent a rational approach in an attempt to further improve response and palliation. Hence, a protocol combining transarterial chemoembolization and systemic chemotherapy was applied in patients with CCC limited to the ***: Eight patients (6 women, 2 men, mean age 62 years) with nonresectable CCC received systemic chemotherapy (gemcitabine 1 000 mg/m2) and additional transarterial chemoembolization procedures (50 mg/m2cisplatin, 50 mg/m2 doxorubicin, up to 600 mg degradable starch microspheres). Clinical follow-up of patients, tumor markers, CT and ultrasound were performed to evaluate maximum response and ***: Both systemic and regional therapies were tolerated well; no severe toxicity (WHO Ⅲ/Ⅳ) was encountered. Nausea and fever were the most commonly observed side effects. A progressive rarefication of the intrahepatic arteries limited the maximum number of chemoembolization procedures in 4 patients. A median of 2 chemoembolization cycles (range, 1-3) and a median of 6.5 gemcitabine cycles (range, 4-11) were *** responses were not achieved. As maximum response, partial responses were achieved in 3 cases,stable diseases in 5 cases. Two patients died from progressive disease after 9 and 10 mo. Six patients are still alive. The current median survival is 12 mo (range, 9-18); the median time to tumor progression is 7 mo (range, 3-18). Seven patients suffered from tumor-related symptoms prior to therapy, 3 of these experienced a treatment-related clinical relief. Observed Changes in Long-Term Climatic Conditions and Inner-Regional Differences in Urban Regions of the Baltic Sea Coast

This paper presents research outcomes from an investigation into climate change and urban impacts on climate development in urban regions of the Baltic Sea coast. The cities considered were Rostock and Stockholm, and their surrounding regions. The objectives were: 1) to determine whether significant changes in temperature and precipitation have occurred and, if so, to what extent;and 2) to establish whether there is a noticeable urban heat island effect in Stockholm and the medium-sized city of Rostock. Climatic trends were detected by linear regression and the Mann- Kendall test. Different precipitation trends were detected over the whole period of observation. Average annual temperatures increased significantly in both case studies, particularly from the 1970s with highest trends in winter and lowest in autumn (Rostock) and summer (Stockholm). Although changes in temperature extremes were detected for both regions, no overall long-term trend for precipitation extremes was observed. The average temperature in the city of Rostock (Stockholm) was approximately 0.3°C to 0.6°C (1.2°C) higher than in the surrounding rural areas had seasonal variations, with maxima in the warm season. The main outcomes were that significant changes in climatic conditions, particularly temperature patterns, have been occurring in the case study regions since the 1980s, and that there is a considerable urban heat island effect in both Stockholm and Rostock. This could encourage urban planners to consider specific climatic conditions and small-scale climatic influences also in relatively small coastal urban conglomerates in mid latitudes which can follow from land use changes.

The fight against lymphatic filariasis:perceptions of community drug distributors during mass drug administration in coastal Kenya

Terrain Details Effect on Connectivity in Ad hoc Wireless Networks

In this work, we conduct a research on the effects of the details of the terrain on the path establishment in wireless networks. We discuss how the terrain induced variations, that are unavoidably caused by the obstructions and irregularities in the surroundings of the transmitting and the receiving antennas, have two distinct effects on the network. Firstly, they reduce the amount of links in the network connectivity graph causing it to behave more randomly, while decreasing the coverage and capacity of the network. Secondly, they increase the length of the established paths between the nodes. The presented results show how the terrain oblique influences the layout of the network connectivity graph, in terms of different network metrics, and gives insight to the appropriate level of details needed to describe the terrain in order to obtain results that will be satisfyingly accurate.

Puppyhood is a very active social and vocal period in a harbor seal's life Ph oca vitulina. An important feature of vocalizations is their temporal and rhythmic structure, and understanding vocal timing and rhythms in harbor seals is critical to a cross-species hypothesis in evolutionary neuroscience that links vocal learning, rhythm perception, and synchronization. This study utilized analytical techniques that may best capture rhythmic structure in pup vocalizations with the goal of examining whether (1) harbor seal pups show rhythmic structure in their calls and (2) rhythms evolve over time. Calls of 3 wild-born seal pups were recorded daily over the course of 1-3 weeks;3 temporal features were analyzed using 3 complementary techniques. We identified temporal and rhythmic structure in pup calls across different time windows. The calls of harbor seal pups exhibit some degree of temporal and rhythmic organization, which evolves over puppyhood and resembles that of other species' in teractive comm un icati on. We suggest n ext steps for investigating call structure in harbor seal pups and propose comparative hypotheses to test in other pinniped species.

Higher education institutions invest a significant amount of resources every year to recruit new ***,higher education administrators have been continuously facing challenges in enrollment management due to the demographic shifts,dramatic increases in educational costs,intense competition among institutions,and the uncertain nature of human selection patterns(Baum,Kurose,&McPherson,2013).[3]Today's post-baccalaureate applicants are more knowledgeable than in previous years,because they can access information on a specific graduate program,in a given college,at any *** reported in numerous studies,the number of graduate students switching out of their universities continues to be an essential issue.A useful prediction model of matriculation that uses available student data is highly desirable to assist the graduate students with timely advising early in their *** study was designed to build a predictive model for the probability that a specific admitted graduate student will *** results indicated that ten predictive variables were statistically significant at the.05 *** an assistantship made the most substantial positive contribution in predicting student matriculation,followed by FAFSA,experience with the university,campus,degree level,college,gender,age,the number of days between application and admission,and distance to the *** study's results could be beneficial for improving marketing efforts aimed toward individuals with characteristics most likely to *** could calculate the predictive score(or percentage)for each prospective student based on the predictive *** efforts could then concentrate on those applicants whose predictive score is high and eliminate the low qualifying students from their recruitment plan.

Reduction in Nitrogen Prior to Harvest Increases Phenolic Content of Baby Red Lettuce Leaves

This study investigated baby red lettuce leaves grown in an inert media and fertigated with 300 or 1000 mg·L-1 CaNO3-N (19% Ca;15.5% N), and the effects of altering CaNO3-N concentrations in the last 7 days prior to harvest on yield, antioxidant capacity, TPP and vitamin C content. Plants receiving 1000 mg·L-1 CaNO3-N had a significantly higher leaf FW than those fertilized with 300 mg·L-1 CaNO3-N after both 21 and 28 days. Pulsing plants with 1000 mg·L-1 CaNO3-N for 7 days after 21 days at 300 mg·L-1 CaNO3-N resulted in a significant increase in FW of 14%, compared with plants receiving 300 mg·L-1 CaNO3-N. After 28 days plants fertilized with nitrogen at 300 mg·L-1 CaNO3-N were significantly higher in TPP than those fertilized with 1000 mg·L-1 CaNO3-N. While there was no significant effect on TPP of a 7-day 1000 mg·L-1 CaNO3-N pulse added to 300 mg·L-1 CaNO3-N, a 7-day pulse of 300 mg·L-1 CaNO3-N added to 1000 mg·L-1 CaNO3-N resulted in a significant increase in TPP. These results indicate that reducing the N availability for 7 days prior to harvest can result in a significant increase in plant phenolic content with no adverse effect on yield.

Standardization in laboratory medicine: Adoption of common reference intervals to the Croatian population

Considering the fact that the results of laboratory tests provide useful information about the state of health of patients, determination of reference value is considered an intrinsic part in the development of laboratory medi-cine. There are still huge differences in the analytical methods used as well as in the associated reference intervals which could consequently significantly affect the proper assessment of patient health. In a constant effort to increase the quality of patients' care, there are numerous international initiatives for standardiza-tion and/or harmonization of laboratory diagnostics in order to achieve maximum comparability of laboratory test results and improve patient safety. Through the standardization and harmonization processes of analytical methods the ability to create unique reference intervals is achieved. Such reference intervals could be applied globally in all laboratories using methods traceable to the same reference measuring system and analysing the biological samples from the populations with similar socio-demographic and ethnic characteristics. In this review we outlined the results of the harmonization processes in Croatia in the field of population based reference intervals for clinically relevant blood and serum constituents which are in accordance with ongoing activity for worldwide standardization and harmonization based on traceability in laboratory medicine.
