Effects of geraniin(rambutan rind extract) on blood pressure and metabolic parameters in rats fed high-fat diet

Objective: A preliminary study showed that geraniin extracted from Nephelium lappaceum L. at 50 mg/kg caused reduction in blood glucose and insulin resistance. The present study serves to further investigate the effects of geraniin at increasing doses between 3.125 and 100 mg/kg in high-fat diet-treated ***: Geraniin(95% purity) was extracted and purified from rambutan rind. Two groups of male Sprague-Dawley rats were fed with 60% high-fat diet and standard rat chow, respectively, for 12 ***-fat diet-treated rats were then administered geraniin at different doses. Body weight, blood pressure and blood glucose readings were measured. At the end of treatment, blood was collected for analysis of glycated haemoglobin A1c(HbA1c), insulin, advanced glycation end-product(AGE) levels, renin, aldosterone and ***: Within the first week of treatment, even the lowest dose of geraniin caused a significant reduction in blood pressure, which was comparable to control diet-treated rats. There were no changes in serum electrolytes, renin or aldosterone. Similarly, there was a significant reduction in serum insulin,insulin resistance and AGE levels at the lowest dose. However, there was no significant decrease in fasting blood glucose or HbA1c. The effects of decreasing insulin, insulin resistance and AGes were observed only at the lower doses, unlike the results observed for blood pressure ***: Geraniin at lower doses improved blood pressure and other metabolic parameters. Secondary metabolites of geraniin, associated with antihypertensive activity, are relatively different to those involved in inhibiting AGE formation and increasing insulin sensitivity. The secondary metabolites of geraniin may be individually responsible for the bioactivities demonstrated.

Application of Natural Antioxidants from Strawberry Tree(Arbutus unedo L.) and Dog Rose(Rosa canina L.) to Frankfurters Subjected to Refrigerated Storage

The effect of the addition of natural antioxidants from strawberry tree （Arbutus unedo L.; AU） and dog rose （Rosa canina L.; RC）, in frankfurters elaborated with or without the addition of antioxidant additives （sodium ascorbate and nitrite） was studied. Six different types of experimental frankfurters were prepared depending on the addition of phenolic-rich extracts from RC and AU and the presence （P） or absence （C） of antioxidant additives. Thiobarbituric acid reactive substances （TBARS）-numbers signiifcantly increased during chilled storage of C-frankfurters while additives and fruit phenolics inhibited lipid oxidation in P-frankfurters. The amount of protein carbonyls signiifcantly increased in all treatments except in P-AU frankfurters. The discoloration process that occurred during the chilled storage was reduced by the addition of substances with proven antioxidant activity （P-frankfurters）. Texture characteristics as hardness, springiness, cohesiveness and gumminess also suffered a signiifcant deterioration in C-frankfurters. The use of phenolic fruit extracts in combination with traditional antioxidant additives is a successful strategy to enhance the oxidative stability of frankfurters without modifying their color and texture properties.

Fixed Bicortical Screw and Blade Implants as a Non-Standard Solution to an Edentulous (Toothless) Mandible

Aim This paper deals with the treatment of an atrophied toothless mandible with a fixing bridge carried by two nonstandard implant systems. Methodology Four bicortical screws were implanted into the frontal part of the mandible and one implant on each side was placed into the distal area of the mandible as a support for a fixing bridge. Results During the years 2002–2007 the authors placed a total of 256 bicortical screw and 84 blade implants. During this period only four bicortical screws and one blade implant failed. The primary and secondary surgical success rate was therefore above 98%, while the prosthetic success rate was 100%. （Bridges which had to be re-fabricated due to implant failure were not taken into account.） Conclusion This approach is recommended as a highly successful and affordable option for a wide range of patients.

Endoscopic lysis of bladder scar associated with Hunner’s lesions:A new technique

Although low-income countries have recently seen an exponential flourishing of digital health initiatives,the landscape is characterised by a myriad of small pilots that rarely reach scaling,sustainability and wide *** case of Burkina Faso represents an exception where a digital health initiative initially conceived to improve the diagnosis of sick children under 5 has supported millions of *** aspects such as interoperability,standardisation,and adaptation to the existing infrastructure were considered as they are prerequisites for scaling;so was the demonstration of the health impact and affordability of the *** those factors which are largely documented in the literature,the experience in Burkina Faso showed that the positive outcome was also determined by the support of numerous stakeholders.A vast network of stakeholders from the Ministry of Health to child caregivers is involved and each of them could have either blocked or promoted the digital health *** to an extensive,time-consuming and tailored stakeholder strategy,it was possible to avoid potential blockages from multiple actors and gain their engagement.

Lipid reserves and immune defense in healthy and diseased migrating monarchs Danaus plexippus

Recent studies suggest that the energetic demands of long-distance migration might lower the pool of resources available for costly immune defenses. Moreover, migration could amplify the costs of parasitism if animals suffering from para- site-induced damage or depleted energy reserves are less able to migrate long distances. We investigated relationships between long-distance migration, infection, and immunity in wild fall-migrating monarch butterflies Danaus plexippus. Monarchs migrate annually from eastern North America to central Mexico, accumulating lipids essential for migration and winter survival as they travel southward. Monarchs are commonly infected by the debilitating protozoan parasite Ophryocystis elektroscirrha （OE）. We collected data on lipid reserves, parasite loads, and two immune measures （hemocyte concentration and phenoloxidase activity） from wild monarchs migrating through north GA （USA） to ask whether （1） parasite infection negatively affects lipid reserves, and （2） greater investment in lipid reserves is associated with lower immune measures. Results showed that monarchs sampled later in the fall migration had lower but not significantly different immune measures and significantly higher lipid reserves than those sampled earlier. Lipid measures correlated negatively but only nearly significantly with one measure of immune defense （phenoloxidase activity） in both healthy and infected monarchs, but did not depend on monarch infection status or parasite load. These results provide weak support for a trade-off between energy reserves and immune defense in migrants, and suggest that previously-demonstrated costs of OE infection for monarch migration are not caused by depleted lipid reserves .

Sorption of 2,4-dinitroanisole (DNAN) on lignin

The present study describes the use of two commercially available lignins,namely,alkali and organosolv lignin,for the removal of2,4-dinitroanisole（DNAN）,a chemical widely used by the military and the dye industry,from *** of DNAN on bothlignins reached equilibrium within 10 hr and followed pseudo second-order kinetics with sorption being faster with alkali than withorganosolv lignin,i.e.k2 10.3 and 0.3 g/（mg·hr）,*** a separate study we investigated sorption of DNAN between 10 and40 C and found that the removal of DNAN by organosolv lignin increased from 0.8 to 7.5 mg/g but reduced slightly from 8.5 to 7.6mg/g in the case of alkali *** isotherms for either alkali or organosolv lignin best fitted Freundlich equation with enthalpyof formation,H0 equaled to 14 or 80 kJ/*** help understand DNAN sorption mechanisms we characterized the two lignins byelemental analysis,BET nitrogen adsorption-desorption and 31P *** in elemental compositions between the two ligninsindicated that alkali lignin should have more sites（O-and S-containing functionalities） for *** BET surface area andcalculated total pore volume of alkali lignin were almost 10 times greater than that of organosolv lignin suggesting that alkali ligninshould provide more sites for sorption.31P NMR showed that organosolv lignin contains more phenolic-OH groups than alkali lignin,i.e.,70% and 45%,*** variations in the type of OH groups between the two lignins might have affected the strength ofH-bonding between DNAN and the type of lignin used.
