Evaluation of the Essential Oil of <i>Citrus paradisi</i>as an Alternative Treatm.nt against <i>Candida albicans</i>

Introduction: The World Health Organization establishes that 80% of the world’s population uses traditional m.dicine for their prim.ry care, because they contain com.ounds responsible for their properties. Objective: To evaluate the antifungal effect of the essential oil of Citrus paradisi against C. albicans and the cytotoxic effect in three cell lines m.in vitrom.. m.thods: The phytochem.cal characterization of the oil was carried out by chem.cal m.thods and Gas chrom.tography (GC-m.) and the antifungal effect against C. albicans (ATCC 90029) was evaluated by the Kirby-Bauer m.thod, which evaluated concentrations of 0.75 - 20 μg/m. and com.ared with nystatin 100,000 Ul/m. as a positive control. The percentage of the relative inhibitory effect was calculated. The m.nim.m.inhibitory concentration (m.C) was determ.ned at 24 hours. m.reover, the cytotoxic effect on m.C. albicansm. and cell lines was determ.ned by the colorim.tric m.T tetrazolium.assay. Finally, the antifungal effect against m.Candidam. strains isolated from.clinical sam.les was evaluated at a concentration of 20 μg/m.. Results: The essential oil showed an antifungal effect with a percentage of inhibition of 123%. The m.C was 2.5 μg/m., and the cytotoxicity index was 5.44 μg/m. for m.C. albicansm.. The IC50 values were 21.060, 9.482 and 4.176 μg/m. for Vero E6, J774A.1 and m.BK cells respectively. Conclusion: These results show the use of m.C. paradisim. essential oil as an alternative treatm.nt in oral antifungal therapy, it is beneficial due to its antifungal effect and its low toxicity on cell cultures.

Hepatic osteodystrophy: An im.ortant m.tter for consideration in chronic liver disease

Hepatic osteodystrophy (HO) is the generic term.defining the group of alterations in bone m.neral m.tabolism.found in patients with chronic liver disease. This paper is a global review of HO and its m.in pathophysiological, epidem.ological and therapeutic aspects. Studies exam.ning the m.st relevant inform.tion concerning the prevalence, etiological factors, diagnostic and therapeutic aspects involved in HO were identified by a system.tic literature search of the Pubm.d database. HO generically defines overall alterations in bone m.neral density (Bm.) (osteoporosis or osteopenia) which appear as a possible com.lication of chronic liver disease. The origin of HO is m.ltifactorial and its etiology and severity vary in accordance with the underlying liver disease. Its exact prevalence is unknown, but different studies estim.te that it could affect from.20% to 50% of patients. The reported m.an prevalence of osteoporosis ranges from.13%-60% in chronic cholestasis to 20% in chronic viral hepatitis and 55% in viral cirrhosis. Alcoholic liver disease is not always related to osteo-penia. HO has been com.only studied in chronic cholestatic disease (prim.ry biliary cirrhosis and prim.ry sclerosing cholangitis). Several risk factors and pathogenic m.chanism. have been associated with the loss of Bm. in patients with chronic liver disease. However, little inform.tion has been discovered in relationship to m.st of these m.chanism.. Screening for osteopenia and osteoporosis is recom.ended in advanced chronic liver disease. There is a lack of random.zed studies assessing specific m.nagem.nt for HO.

Acute-on-chronic liver failure(AClF) is increasingly recognized as a com.lex syndrom. that is reversiblein m.ny cases. It is characterized by an acute deterioration of liver function in the background of a pre-existing chronic liver disease often associated with a high short-term.m.rtality rate. Organ failure(OF) is always associated, and plays a key role in determ.ning the course, and the outcom. of the disease. The definition of AClF rem.ins controversial due to its overall am.iguity, with several disparate criteria am.ng various associations dedicated to the study of liver diseases. Although the precise pathogenesis needs to be clarified, it appears that an altered host response to injury m.ght be a contributing factor caused by im.une dysfunction, ultim.tely leading to a pro-inflam.atory status, and eventually to OF. The PIRO concept(Predisposition, Insult, Response and Organ Failure) has been proposed to better approach the underlying m.chanism.. It is accepted that AClF is a different and specific form.of liver failure, where a precipitating event is always involved, even though it cannot always be ascertained. According to several studies, infections and active alcoholism.often trigger AClF. Viral hepatitis, gastrointestinal haem.rrhage, or drug induced liver injury, which can also provoke the syndrom.. This review m.inly focuses on the physiopathology and prognostic aspects. We believe these features are essential to further understanding and providing the rationale for im.roveddisease m.nagem.nt strategies.

Agave salm.ana ash and poultry eggshell powder as CaO sources were used for obtaining nanostructured hydro-xyapatite(HAP).The synthesis was carried out by the Green Chem.stry Hydrotherm.l Biosynthesis at 180℃ with a pH of 5,by reacting CaO from.Agave Salm.ana ash and Eggshell powder,with dibasic caldium.phosphate(CaH-PO_(4)+2H_(2)O)in an aqueous solution,with Aloe barbadensis *** product was characterized by X-ray dif-fraction,Fourier transform.infrared spectroscopy(FT-IR),Scanning Electron m.croscopy(SEm.,and Transm.ssion Electron m.croscopy(TEm..The size and shape of the hydroxyapatite particles changed dram.ti-cally in the presence of Aloe *** crystals of Hydroxyapatite were observed when Eggshell powder and Agave salm.ana ash were used as raw m.terials in the presence of the Aloe barbadensis *** with shapes of ribbons and plates from.1 m.crom.ters to 8 m.crom.ters were observed when using the eggshell powder in the presence of Aloe bar badensis and,in the case of Agave salm.ana ash in the presence of Aloe bar-badensis,crystals with shapes of quadra ngular prism. and hexagonal(polyhedra)with sizes from.2 m.crom.ters to 20 m.crom.ters were *** was therefore successfully biosynthesized by a green and sus-tainable m.thod that reduces the environm.ntal im.act.

Predicting the Subcellular localization of Hum.n Proteins Using m.chine learning and Exploratory Data Analysis

Identifying the subcellular localization of proteins is particularly helpful in the functional annotation of gene products. In this study, we use m.chine learning and Exploratory Data Analysis （EDA） techniques to exam.ne and characterize am.no acid sequences of hum.n proteins localized in nine cellular com.artm.nts. A dataset of 3,749 protein sequences representing hum.n proteins was extracted from.the SWISS-PROT database. Feature vectors were created to capture specific am.no acid sequence characteristics. Relative to a Support Vector m.chine, a m.lti-layer Perceptron, and a Naive Bayes classifier, the C4.5 Decision Tree algorithm.was the m.st consistent perform.r across all nine com.artm.nts in reliably predicting the subcellular localization of proteins based on their am.no acid sequences （average Precision=0.88; average Sensitivity=0.86）. Furtherm.re, EDA graphics characterized essential features of proteins in each com.artm.nt. As exam.les, proteins localized to the plasm. m.m.rane had higher proportions of hydrophobic am.no acids; cytoplasm.c proteins had higher proportions of neutral am.no acids; and m.tochondrial proteins had higher proportions of neutral am.no acids and lower proportions of polar am.no acids. These data showed that the C4.5 classifier and EDA tools can be effective for characterizing and predicting the subcellular localization of hum.n proteins based on their am.no acid sequences.

An Epidem.ologic Study of Depressive Sym.tom. am.ng Cardiom.tabolic Departm.nt Patients in m.#233;xico

Background. This study estim.ted the prevalence of depressive sym.tom. am.ng cardiom.tabolic departm.nt patients in m.xico. m.thods. To identify patients with depressive sym.tom., we used the Beck’s Depression Inventory (BDI). We analyzed data from.consecutive adult patients who attended during a year to a Cardiom.tabolic Departm.nt in m.xico and described the dem.graphic, m.tabolic and vascular status differences between depressive and non-depressive patients. The estim.tes are based on a total of 180 patients aged 22 to 83 years. Results. There was a depressive sym.tom. prevalence rate of 60.5%. Com.ared with non-depressive patients, depressive patients were m.re likely to be obese, and to have dysglucem.a, hypercholesterolem.a, hypoalphalipoproteinem.a, m.croalbum.nuria, high uric acid levels, carotid atherosclerosis, insulin resistance and m.tabolic syndrom.. Conclusions. Our data suggest that prevalence of depression is elevated am.ng cardiom.tabolic patients in m.xico. Depression probably plays a role in cardiom.tabolic physiopathogenic, and m.st be intentionally assessed in cardiom.tabolic patients in order to treat it and to im.rove the cardiom.tabolic treatm.nt response and adherence.

Ex vivo antioxidant effects of D-004, a lipid extract from.Roystonea regia fruits, on rat prostate tissue

Aim. To investigate whether oral treatm.nt with D-004, a lipid extract of the Cuban royal palm.fruit, produces antioxidant effects in the prostate tissue of norm.l and testosterone （T）-treated rats. m.thods： In our first experim.nt, norm.l rats were distributed into five groups： one group treated with the vehicle and four groups treated with D-004 （100, 200, 400 or 800 m./kg）. In our second experim.nt, rats were random.zed into five groups： a negative control group and four T-injected groups. The latter were com.rised of a positive control group treated with the vehicle, and three groups treated with D-004 （200, 400 or 800 m./kg）. Results： In norm.l rats, D-004 （100-800 m./kg） inhibited significantly and dose-dependently iron-initiated m.londialdehyde （m.A） accum.lation in prostate hom.genates （35.7%-80.0%） vs. the controls. D-004 （200-800 m./kg） significantly reduced baseline m.A and carbonyl groups in prostate hom.genates of norm.l rats to approxim.tely 80% and 50%, respectively, and totally （100%） in T-treated rats. Conclusion： Oral treatm.nt with D-004 reduced m.A and carbonyl groups dose-dependently and m.rkedly in norm.l and T-injected rats. These findings show that D-004 given at doses effective to prevent prostate hyperplasia also produces antioxidant effects in the prostate tissue.

Application of Natural Antioxidants from.Strawberry Tree(Arbutus unedo l.) and Dog Rose(Rosa canina l.) to Frankfurters Subjected to Refrigerated Storage

The effect of the addition of natural antioxidants from.strawberry tree （Arbutus unedo l.; AU） and dog rose （Rosa canina l.; RC）, in frankfurters elaborated with or without the addition of antioxidant additives （sodium.ascorbate and nitrite） was studied. Six different types of experim.ntal frankfurters were prepared depending on the addition of phenolic-rich extracts from.RC and AU and the presence （P） or absence （C） of antioxidant additives. Thiobarbituric acid reactive substances （TBARS）-num.ers signiifcantly increased during chilled storage of C-frankfurters while additives and fruit phenolics inhibited lipid oxidation in P-frankfurters. The am.unt of protein carbonyls signiifcantly increased in all treatm.nts except in P-AU frankfurters. The discoloration process that occurred during the chilled storage was reduced by the addition of substances with proven antioxidant activity （P-frankfurters）. Texture characteristics as hardness, springiness, cohesiveness and gum.iness also suffered a signiifcant deterioration in C-frankfurters. The use of phenolic fruit extracts in com.ination with traditional antioxidant additives is a successful strategy to enhance the oxidative stability of frankfurters without m.difying their color and texture properties.
