Differences in carbon source usage by dental plaque in children with and without early childhood caries

Early childhood caries （ECC） is a considerable pediatric and public health problem worldwide. Preceding studies have focused primarily on bacterial diversity at the taxonomic level. Although these studies have provided significant information regarding the connection between dental caries and oral micmbiomes, further comprehension of this microbial community＇s ecological relevance is limited. This study identified the carbon source metabolic differences in dental plaque between children with and without ECC. We compared the microbial community functional diversity in 18 caries-free subjects with 18 severe ECC patients based on sole carbon source usage using a Biolog assay. The anaerobic microbial community in the ECC patients displayed greater metabolic activity than that of the control group. Specific carbon source metabolism differed significantly between the two groups. Subjects from the two groups were well distinguished by cluster and principal component analyses based on discriminative carbon sources. Our results implied that the microbial functional diversity between the ECC patients and healthy subjects differed significantly. In addition, the Biolog assay furthered our understanding of oral microbiomes as a composite of functional abilities, thus enabling us to identify the ecologically relevant functional differences among oral microbial communities.

Effects of electron beam lithography process parameters on structure of silicon optical waveguide based on SOI

Electron beam lithography(EBL) is a key technology in the fabrication of nanoscale silicon optical waveguide. The influence of exposure dose, the main process parameter of EBL, on the structure profile of poly-methyl methacrylate(PMMA) after development was studied using a silicon on insulator(SOI) wafer with 220 nm top silicon as the substrate. The relationship between exposure dose and structure pattern width after development was analyzed according to the measurement results. The optimum exposure dose of 220 μC/cm^(2) was found to obtain a final structure consistent with the designed mask value through subsequent processes. At the same time, according to the image segmentation curve tracking technology, the contour extraction process of the dose test results was carried out, and the relationship among mask design value, exposure dose and two-dimensional roughness of boundary contour was analyzed, which can provide reference for the subsequent electron beam lithography of the same substrate material.

Spinescent patterns in the flora of Jiaozi Snow Mountain,Southwestern China

Spinescence has been thought to have evolved mainly as a defense against ***,studying its evolution in a whole flora is an excellent approach for understanding long-term plant-herbivore *** this study,we characterized the spinescent plant species of Jiaozi Snow Mountain,Southwestern China,in order to explore the effects of life forms,plant organs,phylogenetic position,and phytogeographical origin on spinescence *** Jiaozi Snow Mountain flora includes 137 spinescent species(9.2%)out of 1488 angiosperm *** found that in these spinescent species,vegetative organs(70.0%)were significantly more defended than reproductive organs(43.8%).Life form had a significant effect on spinescence *** species(18.6%)were more likely to be spiny than non-woody species(6.4%);moreover,woody species mostly defend their vegetative organs(92.2%),whereas herbaceous species mostly defend their reproductive organs(73.3%).For woody plants,leaf habit has a significant effect on ***,spinescence was more common on the reproductive organs of deciduous woody species than on those of evergreen woody species;furthermo re,spinescence was more common on the leaf blades of evergreens than on those of deciduous species;however,the proportion of spinescent petioles in deciduous species was significantly higher than in *** most common spine color was yellow(40.8%),followed by white(16.8%),red(15.8%),and brown(14.3%);furthermore,74.4%of spinescence that showed aposematic color was a different color than the plant organ on which *** findings suggest that spinescence is visually aposematic in the Jiaozi Snow Mountain ***,more families tended to have spines on vegetative organs(83.3%in vegetative organs,50.0%in reproductive organs),but the phylogenetic signals were *** proportion of spinescence was not significantly different between tropical(9.8%of genera,7.6%of species)and temperate(13.2%of ge

Dear Editor, Mitochondrial complex I is important for cellular ATP producti on by tran sporti ng electro ns and gen erati ng proton gradient across the mitochondrial inner membrane (Hirst, 2013). It is also a major cellular locus where electron leakage to oxygen produces superoxide, an ROS (reactive oxygen species), particularly under oxidative stress conditions. Dysfunctional complex I contributes to the most comm on oxidative phosphorylation disorder in humans, with many iden tified gen etic mutati ons in complex I sub units causing a variety of human disorders including Leigh syndrome, encephalomyopathy, cardiomyopathy, parkinsonism and hereditary optic neuropathy (Hirst, 2013;Guo et al., 2017). In addition, complex I is the major target of many parkinsonismcausing neurotoxins including rotenone and MPTP. Past biochemical, cell biological and structural studies have elucidated how complex I functions normally in mitochondrial respiration (Hirst, 2013;Guo et al., 2017;Letts and Sazanov, 2017). Nonetheless, our understanding of mechanisms how complex I dysfunction leads to human diseases is far from completion;therapeutic targets and strategies are urgently needed.

Pharmacokinetic study of gallocatechin-7-gallate from Pithecellobium clypearia Benth. in rats

The pharmacokinetic profile of gallocatechin-7-gallate (J10688) was studied in rats after intravenous administration. Male and female Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats received 1, 3, and 10 mg/kg (i.v.) of J10688 and plasma drug concentrations were determined by a high performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) method. The pharmacokinetic software Data Analysis System (Version 3.0) was used to calculate the pharmacokinetic parameters. For different i.v. doses of J10688, the mean peak plasma concentration (C-0) values ranged from 11.26 to 50.82 mg/L, and mean area under the concentration -time curve (ALC(0-i)) values ranged from 1.75 to 11.80 (mg ' h/L). J10688 lacked dose dependent pharmacokinetic properties within doses between 1 and 10 mg/kg, based on the power model. The method developed in this study was sensitive, precise, and stable. The pharmacokinetic properties of J10688 in SD rats were shown to have rapid distribution and clearance values. These pharmacokinetic results may contribute to an improved understanding of the pharmacological actions of J10688. Decoration of activated carbon nanotubes by assembling nano-silver

A facile solution processed strategy of synthesizing nano silver assembled on carbon nanotubes （CNTs） at room temperature was put forward. Activated carbon nanotubes were used as precursors for preparing silver-decorated nanotubes. The nature of the decorated nanotubes was studied using transmission electron microscopy （TEM）, scanning electron microscopy （SEM）, and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy （EDX）. The inert surfaces of carbon nanotubes were activated by introducing catalytic nuclei via an oxidation-sensitization-activation approach. Activated carbon nanotubes catalyzed the metal deposition specifically onto their surfaces upon immersion in electroless plating baths. The method produced nanotubes decorated with silver. The extent of silver decoration was found to be dependent on fabrication conditions. Dense nano silver assembled on nanotube surfaces could be obtained by keeping a low reaction rate in the solution phase. The results here show that this method is an efficient and simple means of achieving carbon nanotubes being assembled by nano metal.

Hydrothermal Synthesis and Structural Characterization of Three-dimensional Metal-organic Framework [Zn_3(C_2H_2N_3)_2(C_7H_5O_2)_4]

Hydrothermal reaction between mixed ligand（1,2,4-triazole and benzoic acid） and Zn（NO3）2·6H2O afforded a three-dimensional（3D） metal-organic framework Zn3（C2H2N3）2（C7H5O2）4（C2H2N3=1,2,4-triazole, C7H5O2=benzoic acid）. The compound was crystallized in the hexagonal system with space group R3： a=2.90234（9） nm, b=2.90234（9） nm, c=1.08597（5） nm, γ=120°, V=7.9222（5） nm^3, Mr=816.68, Dc=1.541 g/cm^3, Z=9, F（000）=3708, R=0.0636, and wR=0. 1777. Its structure consists of ZnN2O2 tetrahedron and ZnN204 octahedron, which are connected by 1,2,4-triazole and benzoic acid ligands to form a 3D framework with helical units. This compound forms an interpenetrated NbO topology. The compound was characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, elemental analysis, FTIR spectra, and TGA measurements.

The inhibition of 5-a reductase type 2(SRD5A2)by finasteride is commonly used for the management of urinary obstruction resulting from benign prostatic enlargement(BPE).Certain BPE patients showing no SRD5A2 protein expression are resistant to finasteride *** previous work showed that methylated cytosine-phosphate-guanine(CpG)islands in the SRD5A2 gene might account for the absence or reduction of SRD5A2 protein ***,we found that the expression of the SRD5A2 protein was variable and that weak expression of the SRD5A2 protein(scored 0-100)occurred in 10.0%(4/40)of benign adult *** showed that the expression of SRD5A2 was negatively correlated with DNA methyltransferase 1(DNMT1)*** vitro SRD5A2-negative BPH-1 cells were resistant to finasteride treatment,and SRD5A2 was re-expressed in BPH-1 cells when SRD5A2 was demethylated by 5-Aza-2T-deoxycytidine(5-Aza-CdR)or N-phthalyl-L-tryptophan(RG108).Furthermore,we determined the exact methylation ratios of CpG dinucleotides in a CpG island of SRD5A2 through MassArray quantitative methylation *** methylated CpG dinucleotides,including four CpG dinucleotides in the promoter and six CpG dinucleotides in the first exon,were found in a CpG island located from-400 bp to+600 bp in SRD5A2,which might lead to the silencing of SRD5A2 and the absence or reduction of SRD5A2 protein *** cannot exert a therapeutic effect on patients lacking SRD5A2,which may partially account for the resistance to finasteride observed in certain BPE patients.
