Two hot spots in marine ecology,deleterious effects of diatoms and feeding selectivity of copepods,as well as new progress on these two issues achieved in the recent ten years,are *** two issues are considered correlated *** and their metabolites can induce deleterious effects on growth,reproduction and development of copepods,including increase of mortality and decrease of egg production,hatching and growth *** negative effects,resulting from either chemical toxin or nutritional defi-ciency,can be conquered in natural environments by diverse *** is therefore concluded that deleterious effects of diatoms observed in laboratory or during blooming period are only a special case that accommodation of feeding strategy of copepods is *** under-stand their feeding strategy in natural environments is a prerequisite to explaining the mechanisms of deleterious effects caused by diatoms,and makes it possible to re-evaluate the energy flow in marine ecosystems.

Based on the data from 117 holes (9151 samples) and the research on ecology and palaeoecology of Foraminifera combined with that on Ostracoda, diatoms, pollen and spores, eight marine transgressions have been recognized in the great plain regions through the Quaternary sequences and two marine transgressions have been found since the Late Pleistocene in the coastal plain (bedrock coast) areas. In the North china Plain, these are in ascending order:the Bohai transgression in the Early Pleistocene, the Haixing and Huanghua transgressions in the Middle Pleistocene, the Baiyangdian and Cangzhou transgressions in the Late Pleistocene, and the Tianjin transgression in the Holocene. In the Yangtze River Delta region the Rugao and Zhoupu transgressions occurred in the Early Pleistocene, the Shanghai, Jiading, and Wangdian transgressions in the Middle Pleistocene, the Jiangyin and Ge Hu transgressions in the Late Pleistocene, and the Zhenjiang transgression in the Holocene. In the coastal plain (bedrock coast) areas of North china, the Cangzhou transgression was recorded in the Late Pleistocene and the Tianjin transgression in the Holocene, whereas in South china the Fuzhou transgression took place in the Late Pleistocene and the Changle transgression in the Holocene. The transgressions correspond to warm periods and regressions to cold periods. The younger transgressions were not only of shorter duration, but also of larger magnitude. These findings point to the existence of four flood event strata since the Middle Pleistocene: two in the late Middle Pleistocene and another two in the Late Pleistocene.

Based on the measurements of particulate phosphorus（PP） in the Jiaozhou Bay from May 2003 to April 2004,the spatial distribution,seasonal variation and biogeochemical characteristics of PP were investigated to understand the fates and roles of phosphorus in the Jiaozhou Bay *** concentration of the total PP ranged from 0.07 to 2.09 μmol/*** concentration of POP was from 0.01 to 1.83 μmol/dm3,with an average of 0.32 μmol/dm3,which accounted for 49.6% in total *** concentration of PIP was from 0.01 to 1.49 μmol/dm3,with an average of 0.33 μmol/dm3,which accounted for 50.4% in total *** general,the concentrations of PP in surface water show obvious seasonal variations in the Jiaozhou *** was the highest in spring,which derived from the accumulation of phyto-detritus and was the lowest in autumn,which was decomposed into seawaters to participate the recycle of *** was the highest in spring and summer and was the lowest in autumn and *** was mainly influenced by river input in the inner bay but POP derived from autochthonous source in the outer ***,the concentrations of PP in the inner bay were higher than those in mouth and the outer *** the inner bay,the concentrations of PP with the area near the shore were higher than those in the center of the *** PP showed the decreasing trend with depth especially in spring and *** high value of PP emerged in 20 and 10 m corresponding to summer and autumn,*** changes of POP showed hysteretic effect compared with the changes of Chl a in the investigated ***,according to the change of Chl a,the second high value of POP which should be emerged in October was missing due to the remineralization of POP and participation in the recycle of phosphorus,which lead to the high concentration of orthophosphate in seawaters.

Riverine carbon input is closely related to the inshore aquatic environment, the marine carbon pool and climate change. Samples were synchronously obtained from 16 rivers discharging into the Bohai Sea （china） in 1-5 July 2005. The dissolved organic carbon （DOC） concentrations of the 16 rivers were mainly controlled by anthropogenic activities. The particulate organic carbon （POC） of the Haihe, Luanhe, Ziyaxinhe, Chaobaixinhe, Xiaoqinghe, Xiaolinghe, Duliujianhe, Jiyunhe, and Majiahe Rivers mainly originated from pollutants discharged by human, while that of the Huanghe River （Yellow River）, Daliaohe, Shuangtaizihe, Tuhaihe, Dalinghe, Daqinghe, and Liuguhe Rivers were generated mainly by soil erosion. Higher dissolved inorganic carbon （DIC） concentrations in the 16 rivers were detected, which were influenced by the large amounts of carbonate and industrial pollution. The estimated DOC, POC and DIC fluxes from the 16 rivers discharging into the Bohai Sea in summer, 2005 were 0.91×10^5, 1.23×10^5 and 6.31×10^5t, respectively.

Inorganic carbon forms and their influencing factors, mutual transformation and contribution to carbon cycling in the Jiaozhou Bay sediments were discussed. The results show that inorganic carbon in sediments could be divided into five forms： NaCl form, NH3-H20 form, NaOH form, NH20H-HCl form and HCI form. Thereinto, *** form and HCl form account for more than 70% of total inorganic carbon. There was close relationship among every form of inorganic carbon and their correlativity was clearly different with different sedimentary environment except the similar strong positive correlation among NH-OH-HCl form, HCl form and total inorganic carbon in all regions of the Jiaozhou Bay. All forms of inorganic carbon were influenced by organic carbon, pH, Eh, Es, nitrogen and phosphorus in sediments, but their influence had different characteristics in different regions. Every form of inorganic carbon transformed into each other continuously during early diagenesis of sediments and the common phenomenon was that NaCl form, NH3-H2O form, NaOH form and NH2OH-HCl form might transform into steady HCl form. NaCl form, NH3-H2O form, NaOH form and NH2OH-HCl form could participate in carbon recycle and they are potential carbon source; HCl form may be buried for a long time in sediments, and it may be one of the final resting places of atmospheric C02. Inorganic carbon which entered into sediments was about 4.98× 1010 g in the Jiaozhou Bay every year, in which about 1.47×1010 g of inorganic carbon might be buried for a long time and about 3.51 × 1010 g of inorganic carbon might return into seawater and take part in carbon recycling.

The source and significance of two nutrients, nitrogen and phosphorous, were investigated by a modified dilution method performed on seawater samples from the Jiaozhou Bay, in autumn 2004. This modified dilution method accounted for the phytoplankton growth rate, microzooplankton grazing mortality rate, the internal and external nutrient pools, as well as nutrient supplied through remineralization by microzooplankton. The results indicated that the phytoplankton net growth rate increased in turn from inside the bay, to outside the bay, to in the Xiaogang Harbor. The phytoplankton maximum growth rates and microzooplankton grazing mortality rates were 1.14 and 0.92 d^-1 outside the bay, 0.42 and 0.32 d^ -1 inside the bay and 0.98 and 0.62 d^-1 in the harbor respectively. Outside the bay, the remineralized nitrogen （Kt = 24.49） had heavy influence on the growth of the phytoplankton. Inside the bay, the remineralized phosphorus（Kt = 3.49） strongly affected the phytoplankton growth. In the harbor, the remineralized phosphorus （Kt = 3.73） was in larger demand by phytoplankton growth. The results demonstrated that the dif- ferent nutrients pools supplied for phytoplankton growth were greatly in accordance with the phytoplankton community structure, microzooplankton grazing mortality rates and environmental conditions. It is revealed that nutrient remineralization is much more important for the phytoplankton growth in the Jiaozhou Bay than previously believed.

The surface and bottom waters samples were collected from six locations in Xiamen western sea. The quantified estimation of bacterial production (H-3-thymidine method) and observation of bacterial heterotrophic activity (C-14-glucose method) have been made in order to have a better understanding of the role of marine bacteria and their activities. The results showed that the mean value of bacterial heterotrophic activity was 9 X 10(8) cells/(L. h) in the surface waters and 2.6 X 10(8) cells/(L. h) in the bottom waters. The mean value of bacterial production was 38 X 108 cells/( L. h) in the surface waters and 7.1 X 10(8) cells/(L. h) in the bottom waters. The relationship between bacterial production, heterotrophic activity, PCC and DOC measured during this survey were discussed. The good understanding of the relationship between bacteria activity and total coliform was addressed.

The spatial distribution of ammonia-oxidizing Betaproteobacteria （βAOB） was investigated by FISH （fluorescence in situ hybridization） and DGGE （denaturing gradient get electrophoresis） techniques in the sediment off the Changjiang River Estuary. Sediment samples were collected from eight stations in June before the formation of hypoxia zone in 2006. The abundance of βAOB ranged from 1.87× 10^5 to 3.53×10^5 cells/g of sediment. βAOB abundance did not present a negative correlation with salinity, whereas salinity was implicated as the primary factor affecting nitrification rates. The DGGE profiles of PCR-amplified amoA gene fragments revealed that the βAOB community structure of sample S2 separated from other samples at the level of 40% similarity. The variations in composition ofβAOB were significantly correlated with the salinity, temperature, absorption ability of sediments and TOC. The statistical analysis indicates that theβAOB abundance was a main factor to influence nitrification rates with an influence ratio of 87.7% at the level of 40% biodiversity similarity. Considering the good correlation between βAOB abundance and nitrification estimates, the abundance and diversity of βAOB community could be expected as an indirect index of nitrification activity at the study sea area in summer.

Based on the z-coordinate ocean model HAMSOM,we introduced the internal-tide viscosity term and applied the model to numerically investigate the M2 internal tide generation and propagation in the Luzon Strait （LS）.The results show that （1） in the upper 250 m depth,at the thermocline,the maximum amplitude of the generated internal tides in the LS can reach 40 m;（2） the major internal tides are generated to the northwest of Itbayat Island,the southwest of Batan Island and the northwest of the Babuyan Islands;（3） during the propagation the baroclinic energy scattering and reflection is obvious,which exists under the effect of the specific topography in the South china Sea （SCS）;（4） the westward-propagating internal tides are divided into two branches entering the *** passing through 118 E,the major branch is divided into two branches *** strongest internal tides in the LS are generated to the northwest of Itbayat Island and propagate northeastward to the ***,to the east of 122 E,most of the internal tides propagate southeastward to the Pacific as a beam.
