Objective:Contralateral suppression of oto acoustic emission (OAE) is referred as activation of efferent system. Previous literature mentioned about the importance of contra-lateral suppression of OAEs as a tool to assess efferent system in different groups of popula-tion. There is dearth of literature to explore the efferent system function in experienced musicians exposed to rock music using TEOAEs and DPOAEs. Methods:Two groups of participant (14 rock musicians and 14 non-musicians) in the age range of 18e25 years were involved in the study. Contralateral suppression of TEOAEs and DPOAEs were measured using ILO (Version 6) in both groups. Results: Descriptive statistics showed higher suppression of TEOAEs and DPOAEs in rock-musicians at most of the frequencies in comparison to non-musicians. For DPOAE measures, Mann Whitney U test results revealed significantly greater DPOAE suppression only at 1 kHz and 3 kHz in rock-musicians compared to non-musicians. For within group comparison, Kruskal Wallis test results revealed there were significant difference observed across most of the fre-quencies i.e. at 1 kHz, 3 kHz and 6 kHz. For TEOAE measures, Mann Whitney U test results re-vealed that only at 2 kHz, TEOAE suppression in rock-musician was significantly greater compared to non-musicians. Similarly, Kuskal Wallis test results revealed that within group there were no significant differences observed for most of the frequencies except 2 kHz. Conclusions:Based on the above finding, present study concludes that rock musicians are hav-ing better efferent system compared to non-musicians. No suppression effect at few fre-quencies probably indicates more vulnerability at those frequencies. Contralateral suppression of DPOAE shows more significant finding in comparison to contralateral suppression of TEOAEs in present study.

The aim of the present study was to develop a very fast and simple genomic DNA isolation method for Ralstonia solanacearum which infest potato tubers. One hundred potato tubers were collected and ten composite samples were prepared having 10 tubers each. Four different DNA isolation methods were used for bacterial genomic DNA isolation present in tubers. PCR with R. solanacearum specific primers and pathogenicity tests were performed. Out of four methods two gave PCR amplifiable DNA. The simplest method was boiling the cell lysate for 5 min, vortexing for 2 min then extraction with phenol chloroform method. This method provides significant amount of DNA which is free from contaminants thus rendering the DNA amicable to PCR amplification. The developed method would be useful for quick and sensitive detection of this pathogen in seed potatoes and would be beneficial to stop the further spread of pathogen.

Trend Analysis of Three Major Mosquito Borne Diseases in Punjab, India

Background & Objectives: Understanding the distribution and prevalence of three major mosquito borne diseases in an area is critical for the development of effective vector control strategies and public health interventions. The present study is therefore aimed to explore the epidemiological trend of malaria, dengue and chikungunya from 2012 to 2018 in Punjab. Methods: Quantitatively retrospective data was collected from Department of Health and Family Welfare, the National Vector Borne Disease Control Programme (NVBDCP), Punjab from 2012 to March 2018. The collected data was statistically analysed. Results: In case of malaria highest prevalent districts in Punjab are Mansa and Bathinda, for dengue Patiala, Ludhiana and S.A.S. Nagar and Patiala for chikungunya. Malaria was reported mainly from rural areas while dengue and chikungunya were found more in urban areas. For all three mosquito borne diseases, males were infected more as compared to females. Malaria cases were reported in months of August and September while dengue cases increased from July to November whereas chikungunya cases were highest in months of August to October. Conclusions: These findings help in concluding the trend analysis which in turn helps us to increase our focus on disease endemic districts along with boosting the vector control strategies in respective districts. Further the control of these mosquito borne diseases can be solved by employing adequate human resources, by increasing awareness in the community by conducting health camps and strengthening the entomological surveillance for timely reduction in the breeding of the vectors, especially before the repeated rise in cases during the period from July to November each year.

Effect of Parallel Computing Environment on the Solution Consistency of CFD Simulations—Focused on IC Engines

For CFD results to be useful in IC engine analysis, simulation results should be accurate and consistent. However, with wide spread use of parallel computing nowadays, it has been reported that a model would not give the same results against the same input when the parallel computing environment is changed. The effect of parallel environment on simulation results needs to be carefully investigated and understood. In this paper, the solution inconsistency of parallel CFD simulations is investigated. First, the concept of solution inconsistency on parallel computing is reviewed, followed by a systematic CFD simulations specific to IC engine applications. The solution inconsistency against the number of CPU cores was examined using a commercial CFD code CONVERGE. A test matrix was specifically designed to examine the core number effect on engine flow, spray and combustion submodels performance. It was found that the flow field simulation during the gas exchange process is the most sensitive to the number of cores among all submodels examined. An engineering solution was developed where local upwind scheme was used to control the variability, which showed good performance. The implication of the observed inconsistency was also discussed.

Growth and Yield of Guar (Cyamopsis tetragonoloba L.) Genotypes under Different Planting Dates in the Semi-Arid Southern High Plains

Guar is a drought and salt tolerant summer annual legume, which could be a potential alternative crop in the semi-arid Southern High Plains. Increased use of guar gum in oil industries has increased the demand of guar globally. Planting date effects on stand establishment, physiological parameters, and yield formation of guar genotypes were investigated at the New Mexico State University’s Agricultural Science Center at Clovis, NM for two seasons (2014 and 2015). Four guar genotypes (HES 1123, Kinman, Lewis, and Matador) were tested under three planting dates (June 18, July 7, and July 22 in 2014;and June 18, July 6, and July 20 in 2015). Higher temperature and rainfall were recorded under mid-June planting than early-July and late-July plantings. Guar planted under mid-June had better stand establishment as shown by the higher number of plants m-2, better physiology as revealed by higher photosynthetic rate (Pn), transpiration rate (Tr), leaf area index (LAI), and SPAD values than early-July and late-July plantings. Guar planted under mid-June resulted in taller plants, and therefore, produced higher plant biomass than both of the July plantings. Yield attributing characteristics including clusters plant-1, pods plant-1, seeds plant-1, seed spod-1, 1000 seed weight, and harvest index (HI) were highest under mid-June planting followed by the early-July and late-July plantings, respectively. The mid-June planting increased seed yield by 26% and 55% over early-July and late-July (1399 vs. 1111 and 903 kg·ha-1) plantings, respectively in 2014;while the same increase in 2015 was 51% and 243% (1308 vs. 868 and 381 kg·ha-1), respectively. These results indicate that delaying planting beyond mid-June is detrimental to guar productivity. However, genotypes did not show any significant variation in their performance.
