Mathematical modeling of malaria transmission dynamics in humans with mobility and control states

Malaria importation is one of the hypothetical drivers of malaria transmission dynamics across the globe.Several studies on malaria importation focused on the effect of the use of conventional malaria control strategies as approved by the World Health Organization(WHO)on malaria transmission dynamics but did not capture the effect of the use of traditional malaria control strategies by vigilant humans.In order to handle the aforementioned situation,a novel system of Ordinary Differential Equations(ODEs)was developed comprising the human and the malaria vector compartments.Analysis of the system was carried out to assess its quantitative properties.The novel computational algorithm used to solve the developed system of ODEs was implemented and benchmarked with the existing Runge-Kutta numerical solution method.Furthermore,simulations of different vigilant conditions useful to control malaria were carried out.The novel system of malaria models was well-posed and epidemiologically meaningful based on its quantitative properties.The novel algorithm performed relatively better in terms of model simulation accuracy than Runge-Kutta.At the best model-fit condition of 98%vigilance to the use of conventional and traditional malaria control strategies,this study revealed that malaria importation has a persistent impact on malaria transmission dynamics.In lieu of this,this study opined that total vigilance to the use of the WHO-approved and traditional malaria management tools would be the most effective control strategy against malaria importation.

Morphometry and Significance of Collodiaphyseal Angle among Bini Tribe in Southern Nigeria

Introduction:The collodiaphyseal angle(CDA)is an angle formed between the femoral neck and femoral shaft axes.It is a vital determinant of femoral neck fracture as narrower angle is often used as a predictor of stress fracture.It is also important in orthopedic treatment planning,especially hip replacement surgery.Aim:This study was carried out to evaluate the CDA values among the Bini tribe and elucidate its significance.Methodology:This study employed 200 anterior-posterior pelvic radiographs of the Bini tribe(100 males and 100 females)aged between 25 and 55 years obtained from selected radiological diagnostic centers in Benin City,Nigeria,after obtaining the Institutional Ethical Approval.They were used to evaluate the right and left CDA as an angle formed by intersection of the femoral neck and shaft axes and measured using the goniometer.Data were statistically analyzed using IBM-SPSS(version 20)with the mean,standard deviation,and range evaluated,and side and gender comparisons were done using t-test,and P0.05).Conclusion:The CDA can be employed as a morphometric indicator of sexual differences and for other clinical applications.

Physicochemical Properties of the Seed Oil of Khaya senegalensis

The physicochemical characteristics of Khaya senegalensis seed oil were investigated. Iodine value, saponification value, percentage free fatty acid (FFA), acid value, and peroxide value were the chemical parameters examined in the oil analysis, while specific gravity and refractive index were examined as physical parameters. The results showed that the acid value was 1.18 ± 0.01, the saponification value was 191.76 ± 0.01 mgKOH/gm, and the iodine value was 102.79 ± 0.01. It contained 0.59 ± 0.01 percent free fatty acid. The value of peroxide was 6.83 ± 0.01 meq/kg. The results showed that the refractive index was 1.462 ± 0.02 and the specific gravity was 0.9194 ± 0.04. The established parameters fell within the worldwide and Nigerian vegetable oil industry standards.

Evaluation of antioxidant enzymes performances and DNA damage induced by bisphenol A and diisobutylphthalate in Hyperiodrilus africanus-earthworms

Background:Bisphenol A(BPA)and diisobuthylphthalate(DIBP)have found wide applications as plasticizers;however,they are covalently bonded to materials and are subsequently leached into the environment.Methods:This study evaluated the effects of BPA,DIBP and mixtures of BPA and DIBP on the antioxidant enzymes[superoxide dismutase(SOD),peroxidase(POD)]activities using standard methods and DNA profile of earthworm(Hyperiodrilus africanus)using randomly amplified polymerase chain reaction(RAPD-PCR)method.A total of 2 kg soil samples collected from FADAMA Farm,Federal University of Agriculture,Abeokuta were spiked to obtain 1,2.5,5 and 10 ppm of BPA,DIBP and mixtures of BPA and DIBP.Earthworms were exposed to the unpolluted and spiked soil samples and were collected on the 7th and 14th day for SOD,POD and DNA analysis.Results:SOD activity was more pronounced at 5 and 10 ppm concentrations.POD activity was increased in all concentrations,including the control,meanwhile POD activity induced by BPA and DIBP was significantly higher(p<0.05)at 10 ppm compared to other concentrations.RAPD-PCR analysis revealed varying DNA fragment lengths due to excessive oxidative stress generated by the treatments,resulting in DNA damage.BPA and DIBP mixtures generated more fragments of DNA on day 14 than other treatments.Conclusions:This study established that antioxidant activity decreases with exposure time to BPA and DIBP,while DNA damage increases with exposure time.

Male infertility has become a problem worldwide,and recent research has emphasized the development of more effective therapy options.Among natural compounds,rutin has been widely studied for its potential to treat dysfunction related to male infertility,including a reduction in sperm quality,spermatogenesis disruption and structural disruption in the testis.A thorough review of scientific literature published in several databases,including Google Scholar,PubMed/MEDLINE and Scopus,was used to synthesize the present state of research on the role of rutin in male reproductive health.Rutin has been shown to possess antiapoptotic,antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities,among others,which are crucial in the management of male infertility.Numerous investigations have shown that rutin protects against male infertility and have explored the underlying mechanisms involved.The present review,therefore,assesses the therapeutic mechanisms involved in male infertility treatment using rutin.Rutin was able to mitigate the induced oxidative stress,apoptosis,inflammation,and related physiological processes that can cause testicular dysfunction.

The testis is an immune-privileged organ susceptible to oxidative stress and inflammation,two major factors implicated in male infertility.A reduction in the concentration and activities of testicular function biomarkers has been shown to correlate with impaired hypothalamic-pituitary-testicular axis and oxidative stress.However,the use of natural products to ameliorate these oxidative stress-induced changes may be essential to improving male reproductive function.Quercetin possesses several pharmacological activities that may help to combat cellular reproduction-related assaults,such as altered sperm function and reproductive hormone dysfunction,and dysregulated testicular apoptosis,oxidative stress,and inflammation.Studies have shown that quercetin ameliorates testicular toxicity,largely by inhibiting the generation of reactive oxygen species,with the aid of the two antioxidant pharmacophores present in its ring structure.The radical-scavenging property of quercetin may alter signal transduction of oxidative stress-induced apoptosis,prevent inflammation,and increase sperm quality in relation to the hormonal concentration.In this review,the therapeutic potential of quercetin in mediating male reproductive health is discussed.

Plantain-based diet modulates atrazine-induced testicular toxicities in rats

Objective:To assess the potential of plantain-based diet in modulating testicular toxicities in rats exposed to atrazine.Methods:The plantain-based diet at 50%,25% and 12.5% were prepared from the basal diet by substituting the corn starch with plantain fruit pulp flour at different percentages.Wistar rats were fed plantain-based diet in varying concentrations ranging from 12.5% to 50% of the basal diet for 21 days before or after atrazine treatment in a two-phase experiment:preventive and therapeutic phases.The therapeutic model(n=35)had seven groups with 5 rats each,including the control,atrazine,atrazine recovery,atrazine plus plantain-based diet 50%,25%,12.5%,and atrazine plus quercetin groups.The preventive model(n=30)had six groups of 5 rats,consisting of the control,atrazine,50%,25%,12.5% plantain-based diet plus atrazine,and quercetin plus atrazine groups.Gonadal hormones(testosterone,luteinizing hormone and follicle-stimulating hormone),sperm parameters(sperm motility,viability,morphology and concentration),and testicular function indices(protein,cholesterol,glycogen,acid phosphatase,alkaline phosphatase and lactate dehydrogenase)were measured.Results:The gonadal hormones,sperm characteristics,and testicular function indices of the rat testis decreased significantly in the atrazine group alongside degeneration of the histoarchitecture.However,plantain-based diet restored the gonadal hormone concentrations,semen parameters,and testicular function indices in both the preventive and therapeutic models.Conclusions:Treatment with plantain-based diet protects against rat testicular toxicity caused by atrazine via the modulation of gonadal hormones,sperm quality,testicular function index as well as histoarchitecture of rat testes.

Cultural conceptulisations in Elijah Akintunde's Yoruba ballad gospel song Jjo Odi‘Dance of the Deaf’

What kind of actions or reactions can sudden good news elicit in the experiencer?How can these actions/reactions be cognitively interpreted by others?Is there a nexus between social realities and the gospel?Using these questions as a spark,this article critically examines the cultural conceptualisations in Jjo Odi,a Yoruba gospel ballad by Elijah Akintunde.Drawing insights from Cultural Linguistics,this study argues that cultural symbols and structures(schemas,categories,and metaphors)are deployed in gospel music to capture the message of liberation from socio-economic challenges.Specifically,DANCE and DEAFNESS are mapped to express the kind of PERPLEXITY and ABSURDITY that characterise reaction to SUDDEN PLEASANT NEWS.The song also invokes cognitive schemas and cultural memories of dance,cultural class categories and metaphorization of dance and its internalized network of cognitive associations in the Yoruba world view to project the message of prosperity as a miracle.The study concludes that language is firmly grounded in cultural cognition and the complex socio-economic lives of Nigerians can be captured in the negotiation of spirituality in gospel songs.Future research may explore how the artistic performance of other music genres equally evoke cultural imageries in communicating other diverse issues.

Artificial intelligence model for predicting geomechanical characteristics using easy-to-acquire offset logs without deploying logging tools

This study focuses on predicting acoustic and mechanical rock properties using random forest and feed forward neural network models to evaluate the likelihood of developing efficient ways of handling absence of rock properties at offset locations.The Random Forest algorithm was used for direct prediction of the sonic data without considering the depth range of the facies;while Feed forward Neural network was used to predict the sonic data with emphasis on the lithofacies depths.The accuracy of these approaches was used in choosing the best and the most robust model for predicting sonic data when estimating formation strength and mechnical properties.Acoustic log was predicted after training a combination of caliper log,gamma log,depth,density log and resistivity log from offset wells.5 hidden layers that accounts for the data structural complexities was included in the model architecture.A multilayer perceptron network was adopted for the Random forest algorithm to handle linear combinations of input data set.Diverse error computations were used to evaluate the performance of the model.Lastly,mechanical properties and sanding potential was evaluated using standard relations and appropriate depositional conditions.Random forest algorithm gave the best prediction accuracy of more than 96%,but the Feed forward network has the lower mean absolute error and mean squared error of 2.75 and 5.93 respectively.Generally,the predicted compressive and shear wave velocity show increase of values with depth,a behavior that is capable of identifying payzone characteristics.This was validated by the distinction seen within the 200 feet gas sand formation in the deeper portion of the studied well(9600e9800 feet).Potential failure portions of the wells,a common feature in the field,were inferred from the sanding potential computed using the predicted mechanical properties value.

Processing bioactive peptides from natural sources using electrodialysis with ultrafiltration membranes(EDUF)have gained attention since it can fractionate in terms of their charge and molecular weight.Quinoa is a pseudo-cereal highlighted by its high protein content,amino acid profile and adapting growing conditions.The present work aimed at the production of quinoa peptides through fractionation using EDUF and to test the fractions according to antihypertensive and antidiabetic activity.Experimental data showed the production of peptides ranging between 0.4 and 1.5 k Da.Cationic(CQPF)(3.01%),anionic(AQPF)(1.18%)and the electrically neutral fraction quinoa protein hydrolysate(QPH)-EDUF(~95%)were obtained.In-vitro studies showed the highest glucose uptake modulation in L6 cell skeletal myoblasts in presence of QPH-EDUF and AQPF(17%and 11%)indicating potential antidiabetic activity.The antihypertensive effect studied in-vivo in spontaneously hypertensive rats(SHR),showed a decrease in systolic blood pressure in presence of the fractionated peptides,being 100 mg/kg a dose comparable to Captopril(positive control).These results contribute to the current knowledge of bioactive peptides from quinoa by reporting the relevance of EDUF as tool to produce selected peptide fractions.Nevertheless,further characterization is needed towards peptide sequencing,their respective role in the metabolism and scaling-up production using EDUF.
