Effect of Biofertilizers on the Agromorphological Parameters of Three Okra Cultivars in Southern Côte d’Ivoire

Okra (Abelmoschus esculentus L.) is an herbaceous plant of the Malvaceae family. In Côte d’Ivoire, okra production is estimated to be over 193,000 tons. This low production is largely due to poor soils and hardly covers the needs of the population. To remedy this, growers systematically use mineral fertilizers. However, these fertilizers pollute the environment. To find an alternative to chemical fertilization and increase production, the effect of biofertilizers (Spaawet, Retone, Super Gro) compared with NPK mineral fertilizer was evaluated on Divo, Teriman, and Djonan F1 cultivars. The trial was set up in a factorial block design with three replications. Plant height, number of functional leaves, and crown diameter were assessed at 60 days after sowing (DAS). The time to 50% flowering, production time, and fruit yield were calculated. The results showed that the biofertilizer Retone induced the highest heights and number of functional leaves, with averages of 61.89 cm and 29.88 leaves, respectively. The diameter at the crown (17.77 mm) was highest with the NPK mineral fertilizer, and the shortest 50% flowering time, with an average of 47.61 days, was also obtained with the biofertilizer Retone. The NPK mineral fertilizer produced the longest production time, with an average of 35.25 days. The highest yields were obtained using Retone (11.07 t/ha) and NPK (9.52 t/ha) fertilizers. The “Divo*Retone” interaction produced the highest yield with an average of 12.19 t/ha. The biofertilizer Retone could therefore be used as an alternative fertilizer to chemical fertilization in okra crops, given its effect on the parameters assessed.

Peritoneal Histoplasmosis about a Case and Literature Review

Histoplasmosis is an opportunistic granulomatous fungal infection. Peritoneal histoplasmosis (PH) is a rare form. The first case of PH was described in 1970 but this is the first case reported in Mauritania. We report the case of a 60-year-old male patient with a history of pulmonary tuberculosis, treated and declared cured, and partial epileptic seizures treated with Carbamazepine. Contrast computed tomography of the abdomen showed a large mass with a large intraperitoneal fluid component with a finely calcified wall in places, for which laparoscopy and biopsy were performed, identifying Histoplasma capsulatum infection. The subject received treatment with amphotericin B deoxycholate with good evolution, and outpatient management with itraconazole. PH is a rare entity that requires high clinical suspicion, especially in immunocompetent patients. The patient was informed that non-identifying information from the case would be submitted for publication, and he provided consent.

Diagnostics of Environmental Risks and Mapping of Surface Water Sensitivity Due to Metal Contamination from Artisanal Gold Mining in Côte d’Ivoire: Case of Angovia, Kokumbo, Hire and Agbaou

The present study performed on the Angovia, Kokumbo, Hire and Agbaou sites consisted of mapping the environmental risks linked to artisanal gold mining activities in C?te d’Ivoire. An inventory was done by observing the different phases of gold extraction and identifying the risks associated with these phases. Using a Geographic Information System (GIS), the representation of the spatial distribution of the pollution risks has been realized from indicator descriptives of the environmental sensitivity (i.e. slope, proximity to the watercourse, soil cover) and the transfer indicator (i.e. rainfall). The analysis of this map showed low sensitivity of mercury (Hg), arsenic (As), copper (Cu) and zinc (Zn) measured in the waters of the Hire and Agbaou localities, while moderate sensitivity in Kokumbo surface waters and high sensitivity for those of Angovia locality were observed. Moreover, analysis of Hg, As, Cu and Zn content spatial distribution maps in surface waters revealed that Hg and As come mainly from the artisanal mining activities for most localities. Among these metallic trace elements observed, only the Hg content was above the WHO Limit Values, 1994 (>0.001 mg·L-1). The continuous spread of metallic trace elements in surface water can pose serious health problems for people living around artisanal gold mining sites, hence the need to put in place a protection plan against contamination.

ONIOM Method Characterization of Hydrogen Bonding Sites of Mycolactone A/B, a Buruli Ulcer Toxin

Mycolactone molecules are responsible of Buruli ulcer disease. In this work, we are interested in the geometric, energetic and spectroscopic characterization of the hydrogen bonding interactions in mycolactone A/B, using quantum chemical method, especially ONIOM(HF/6-311+G(d,p):AM1) and ONIOM (B3LYP/6-311+G(d,p):AM1) levels. ONIOM two layers method has been used because mycolactones compounds are very large, taking into account diffuse and polarization functions are important whenever the matter is intermolecular interactions. Geometric, energetic and spectroscopic parameters of hydrogen bonding reaction on each of the nine oxygen heteroatoms of mycolactone A/B have revealed that the O5sp2 heteroatom is far away the hydrogen bonding site. The identification of such a site constitutes a tool for working out a methodology for the annihilation of the destruction effects of mycolactones.

Combining Experimental and Quantum Chemical Study of 2-(5-Nitro-1,3-Dihydro Benzimidazol-2-Ylidene)-3-Oxo-3-(2-Oxo-2H-Chromen-3-yl) Propanenitrile as Copper Corrosion Inhibitor in Nitric Acid Solution

Due to acidic solutions aggressiveness, corrosion inhibitors use is considered to be one the most practical methods to delay metals dissolution in the said solutions. In this study benzimidazolyl derivative namely 2-cyanochalcones 2-(5-nitro-1,3-dihydrobenzimidazol-2-ylidene)-3-oxo-3-(2-oxo-2H-chromen-3-yl) propanenitrile which was synthesized was then applied as a corrosion inhibitor for copper in 1 M HNO3 solution. The inhibition action of this molecule was evaluated by gravimetric and density functional theory (DFT) methods. It was found experimentally that this compound has a better inhibition performance and its adsorption on copper surface follows Langmuir adsorption isotherm. This adsorption evolves with temperature and inhibitor concentration, it is endothermic and occurs spontaneously with an increase in disorder. Corrosion kinetic parameters analysis supported by Adejo-Ekwenchi model revealed the existence of both physisorption and chemisorption. DFT calculations related that compound adsorption on copper surface is due to its electron donating and accepting capacity. The reactive regions specifying the electrophilic and nucleophilic attack sites were analyzed using Fukui and dual descriptor functions. Experimental results obtained were compared with the theoretical findings.

Distribution, Mobility, and Health Risks Assessment of Trace Metals in River Sediments from Intense Agricultural Activity Areas in West Africa

The economy of West African countries is mainly based on agriculture. However, the trace metal(loid)s contamination status in rivers is relatively unknown in the region. In this work, 45 surface sediments collected from the Bandama, Comoé, and Bia Rivers in south and south eastern Côte d’Ivoire (West Africa), were analyzed for total metal concentrations and chemical speciation. The results showed that the river sediments were considerably contaminated by Cd and moderately contaminated by As, Cu, Pb, and Zn. Significant spatial variations were observed among the stations but not between the rivers. Metals Cd and Cu were likely to cause more ecological risks. The speciation analysis unravelled that the metal(loid)s partitioned mainly in the residual fraction, with the potential mobile fraction varying from 14% to 28%. The study calls for establishment of strict policies relative to the application of fertilizers and agrochemicals and mining activities to protect the environment and human health risks.

Antiproliferative Effects of Zinc-Citrate Compound on Hormone Refractory Prostate Cancer

Objective： To investigate the antiproliferative effects of zinc-citrate compound on hormone refractory prostate cancer （HRPC）. Methods： HRPC cell line （DU145） and normal prostate cell line （RWPE-1） were treated with zinc, citrate and zinc-citrate compound at different time intervals and concentrations to investigate the effect of zinc-citrate compound. Mitochondrial （m）-aconitase activity was determined using aconitase assay. DNA laddering analysis was performed to investigate apoptosis of DU145 cells. Molecular mechanism of apoptosis was investigated by Western blot analysis of P53, P21w^fl, Bcl-2, Bcl-xL and Bax, and also caspase-3 activity analysis. Results： Treatment with zinc-citrate compound resulted in a time- and dose-dependent decrease in cell number of DU145 cells in comparison with RWPE-1. M-aconitase activity was significantly decreased. DNA laddering analysis indicated apoptosis of DU145 cells. Zinc-citrate compound increased the expression of P21wall and P53, and reduced the expression of Bcl-2 and Bcl-xL proteins but induced the expression of Bax protein. Zinc-citrate compound induced apoptosis of DU145 cells by activation of the caspase-3 pathway. Conclusion： Zinc-citrate compound can induce apoptotic cell death in DU145, by caspase-3 activation through up-regulation of apoptotic proteins and down-regulation of antiapoptotic proteins.

Quantitative Structure-Activity Relationship Study of a Benzimidazole-Derived Series Inhibiting Mycobacterium tuberculosis H37Rv

This work was carried out on a series of twenty-two (22) benzimidazole derivatives with inhibitory activities against Mycobacterium tuberculosis H37Rv by applying the Quantitative Structure-Activity Relationship (QSAR) method. The molecules were optimized at the level DFT/B3LYP/6-31 + G (d, p), to obtain the molecular descriptors. We used three statistical learning tools namely, the linear multiple regression (LMR) method, the nonlinear regression (NLMR) and the artificial neural network (ANN) method. These methods allowed us to obtain three (3) quantitative models from the quantum descriptors that are, chemical potential (μ), polarizability (α), bond length l (C = N), and lipophilicity. These models showed good statistical performance. Among these, the ANN has a significantly better predictive ability R2 = 0.9995;RMSE = 0.0149;F = 31879.0548. The external validation tests verify all the criteria of Tropsha et al. and Roy et al. Also, the internal validation tests show that the model has a very satisfactory internal predictive character and can be considered as robust. Moreover, the applicability range of this model determined from the levers shows that a prediction of the pMIC of the new benzimidazole derivatives is acceptable when its lever value is lower than 1.

Signal transducers and activators of transcription(STATs) mediate essential signals for various biological processes,including immune responses,hematopoiesis,and neurogenesis. STAT3,for example,is involved in the pathogenesis of various human diseases,including cancers,autoimmune and inflammatory disorders. STAT3 activation is therefore tightly regulated at multiple levels to prevent these pathological conditions. A number of proteins have been reported to associate with STAT3 and regulate its activity. These STAT3-interacting proteins function to modulate STAT3-mediated signaling at various steps and mediate the crosstalk of STAT3 with other cellular signaling pathways. This article reviews the roles of novel STAT3 binding partners such as DAXX,zipperinteracting protein kinase,Krüppel-associated box-associated protein 1,Y14,PDZ and LIM domain 2 and signal transducing adaptor protein-2,in the regulation of STAT3-mediated signaling.

Potential Probiotic Tiger Nut-Cashew Nut-Milk Production by Fermentation with Two Lactic Bacteria Isolated from Ivorian Staple Foods

Probiotification of plant milk can improve its sensory and health-promoting properties. As traditional fermented foods where lactic acid bacteria (LAB) are present have been associated with beneficial effects on human health, the beneficial effects of two LAB recently isolated from two current Ivorian staple foods (a pepper and a traditional beer) were screened. These two strains LAC 1 (Lactobacillus plantarum) and LAC 2 (Pediococcus acidilactici) which presented probiotic, exopolysaccharides, inflammatory and anti-oxidant activities, were used to ferment a composite plant milk of tiger-nut and cashew (80/20) compared to two starters of a commercial yogourt. The obtained plant milks SCT 2 and SCT 3 with a significant increase in their antioxidant and/or anti-inflammatory activities and lactic bacteria contents were more preferred by consumers than SCT 1 obtained by fermentation of the commercial yogourt starters. The mixing of LAC 1 and LAC 2 was not beneficial. SCT 2 (with an anti-inflammatory activity of 31.38% and an anti-oxidant activity of 17.30%) and SCT 3 (with an anti-oxidant activity of 22.28) could be further tested in animal models to verify their nutrition-health claims.
