A new heuristic approach was undertaken for the establishment of a core set for the diversity research of rice. As a result, 107 entries were selected from the 10 368 characterized accessions. The core set derived using this new approach provided a good representation of the characterized accessions present in the entire col.ection. No significant differences for the mean, range, standard deviation and coefficient of variation of each trait were observed between the core and existing col.ections. We also compared the diversity of core sets established using this Heuristic Core Col.ection （HCC） approach with those of core sets established using the conventional clustering methods. This modified heuristic algorithm can also be used to select genotype data with al.elic richness and reduced redundancy, and to facilitate management and use of large col.ections of plant genetic resources in a more efficient way.

evaluation of the Inverse Fluidized Bed Biological Reactor for Treating High-Strength Industrial Wastewaters

The aim of this work was to investigate the aerobic degradation of high-strength industrial (refinery) wastewaters in the inverse fluidized bed biological reactor, in which polypropylene particles of density 910 kg/m3 were fluidized by an upward flow of gas through a bed. Measurements of chemical oxygen demand (COD) versus residence time t were performed for various ratios of settled bed volume to reactor volume (Vb/VR) and air velocities u. The largest COD reduction, namely, from 54,840 to 2,190 mg/l, i.e. a 96% COD decrease, was achieved when the reactor was operated at the ratio (Vb/VR) = 0.55, air velocity u = 0.046 m/s and t = 65 h. Thus, these val.es of (Vb/VR), u and t can be considered as the optimal operating parameters for a reactor when used in treatment of high-strength refinery wastewaters. In the treatment operation conducted in a reactor optimally control.ed at (Vb/VR) = 0.55, u = 0.046 m/s and t = 65 h, the conversions obtained for all phenolic constituents of the wastewater were larger than 95%. The conversions of about 90% were attained for other hydrocarbons.

Newly developed autoimmune cholangitis without relapse of autoimmune pancreatitis after discontinuing prednisolone

A 57-year-old man presented with a 2-wk history of painless jaundice and weight Iossl He had a large ill- defined enhancing mass-like lesion in the uncinate pro- cess of the pancreas with stricture of the distal common bile duct. Aspiration cytology of the pancreatic mass demonstrated inflammatory cells without evidence of malignancy. Total serum immunoglobulin G level was slightly elevated, but IgG4 level was normal. After the 2-wk 40 mg prednisolone trial, the patient＇s symptoms and bilirubin level improved significantly. A follow-up computed tomography （CT） scan showed a dramatic resolution of the pancreatic lesion. A low dose steroid was continued. After six months he self-discontinued prednisolone for 3 wk, and was presented with jaundice again. ACT scan showed newly developed intrahepatic biliary dilatation and marked concentric wall thickening of the common hepatic duct and the proximal common bile duct without pancreatic aggravation. The patient＇ s IgG4 level was elevated to 2.51 g/l. Prednisolone was started again, after which his serum bilirubin level became normal and the thickening of the bile duct was resol.ed. This case suggests that autoimmune pancre- atitis can progress to other organs that are not invol.ed at the initial diagnosis, even with sustained pancreatic remission.

effects of PeG Priming and Fungicide Treatment on Kenaf(Hibiscus cannabinus l.)Seed Germination

An experiment was conducted in the Jeollabuk-do Agricultural Research and extension Services,Korea from February to June 2017,to study the effect of pol.ethylene glycol(PeG)on the germination of kenaf seeds variety‘Jangdae’,which treated with seven PeG concentrations(0%,10%,20%,25%,30%,35%and 40%)for 24 h at 20°C in the dark,and evaluate the effect of fungicide on surging kenaf seed germination in the *** showed that the critical concentration rate needed to hasten germination based on germination percentage,times to reach 50%of the final germination rate(T50)and mean *** days to germination(MDG)is using 10%PeG.A maximum germination rate of 83.8%using hydro-priming(HP)(seed treated with HP)was observed during the first 12 h of *** control’s(Jangdae seed)germination increased sharply and reached a maximum germination rate of 53.2%on the 21st day in the *** 21 d,germination of all priming treatments ranged from 13.8%to 26.3%.The palisade layer(PAl)after priming treatment was more damaged than that of the ***,a significant difference on the acid level between the control and PeG priming treatment(plso found out that seed modifications after priming could affect in the field.A fungicide cal.ed“Tiram”was used after priming to help kenaf seeds decrease T50 and MDG,and increase germination *** showed that application of fungicide after priming optimizes seed germination and ***,it is recommended to invigorate the kenaf seed before planting.

Characteristics of Kenaf(Hibiscus cannabinus l.) Mutants Induced by Gamma-Ray

Kenaf (Hibiscus cannabinus l.) is known as a multipurpose crop producing biomass for energy thus, the study was conducted to select the elite mutants with higher biomass produced through mutation. Obtained from the National Agricultural Genetic Resources Center (NAGRC) in Korea, the seeds of the original natural resource named IT202801 (control) were irradiated with 250 Gy gamma-ray. The agronomic performances, genetic variation and histological analysis of the elite mutant lines were investigated at M2 generation in comparison with the control. Significant differences were observed from the previous three evaluations of the eight mutants. Nine plants, including the control and eight mutants, had little difference in the number of flowering days from July 23 to July 25. The leaf shape of the control was entire, while the leaf shape of the mutant was palmate. Of the eight lines, M2IT20-5 showed better performance in regard to diameter, dry weight and seed weight per plant. The random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) analysis produced a genetic diversity of 72.7% within the genotypes used. A dendrogram was constructed based on the RAPD fragments. Differentiation was demonstrated between the control and kenaf mutants. Taken together, the mutant line, M2IT20-5, can be useful as a resource for high biomass production.

A New Cytotoxic Sterol Produced by an endophytic Fungus from Castaniopsis fissa at the South China Sea Coast

A new sterol, ergosta-8(9),22-diene-3,5,6,7-tetraol(3β,5α,6β,7α,22e)(A) together with three known sterols: 3β, 5α,6β-trihydroxyergosta-7,22-diene (B), 3β-hydroxy-5α,8α- epidioxyer-gosta-6,22-diene (C) and ergosterol (D) were isolated from the mycelia of an unidentified endophytic fungus separated from Castaniopsis fissa (chestnut tree). Compound A exhibited potent selective cytotoxicity against Bel-7402, NCI4460 and l-02 cell lines with IC50 val.es 8.445, 5.03, 13.621 μg/ml, respectively.

Development of Val.e-Added Chocolate with Oat and evaluation of Its Physiological Properties

Comparison of mesophilic and thermophilic anaerobic digestions of thermal hydrolysis pretreated swine manure: Process performance,microbial communities and energy balance

Anaerobic digestion (AD) of swine manure (SM) commonly shows low biogas output and unsatisfactory economic performance. In this study, thermophilic AD (TAD, 50±1℃) was combined with thermal hydrolysis pretreatment (THP, 170℃/10 bar), to investigate its potential for maximizing biogas yield, securing successful digestion and microbial diversity, as well as improving energy balance. Four lab-scale continuously stirred tank reactors were operated for 300 days and compared with each other, i.e., reactor 1 (raw SM fed in mesophilic AD:RSM-MAD), reactor 2 (THP-treated SM fed in MAD:TSM-MAD), reactor 3 (RSM-TAD),and reactor 4 (TSM-TAD). The results showed that THP was efficient to increase methane production of SM, TSM-TAD mode led to the highest methane yield (129.8±40.5 ml-CH_(4)/gVS/day) among the tests (p lthough TAD was more likely to induce free ammonia (> 700 mg/l) or volatile fatty acids (> 6000 mg/l) accumulation compared with MAD in start-up phase, TSM-TAD treatment mode behaved a sustainable digestion process in a long-term operation. For TSM-TAD scenario, higher Shannon–Weaver (3.873) and lower Simpson index (0.061) indicated this mode ensured and enlarged the diversity of bacteria communities. Phylum Bathyarchaeota was dominant (59.3%-90.0%) in archaea community,followed by euryarchaeota in the four reactors. RSM-MAD treatment mode achieved the highest energy output (4.65 GJ/day), TSM-TAD was less effective (-17.38 GJ/day) due to increased energy demands. Thus improving the energetic efficiency of THP units is recommended for the development of TSM-TAD treatment mode.
