The spread of multidrug-resistant strains of bacteria makes it necessary to discover new classes of antibacterial and compounds that inhibit these resistant mechanisms. Hence, this study investigated the antimicrobial activities of Ganoderma lucidum and Deadaleopsis confragosa extracts against some bacterial isolates of medical importance. Using agar well diffusion assay, aqueous, ethanolic and petroleum ether extracts were obtained from Ganoderma lucidum and Daedaleopsis confragosa and assayed for antimicrobial on five bacterial species, viz: Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Proteus mirabilis and Klebsiella pneumoniae. In vitro bioassay revealed that the aqueous extract of G. lucidum inhibited P. aeruginosa S. aureus, E. coli and K. Pneumoniae with inhibition zones of 11.0 ± 0.02 mm, 10.0 ± 0.02 mm, 13.0 ± 0.03 mm and 14.0 ± 0.0 mm respectively. The ethanolic extract of G. lucidum also inhibited P. aeruginosa, S. aureus and E. coli with inhibition zones 12.0 ± 0.01 mm, 11.0 ± 0.02 mm and 16.0 ± 0.01 mm. Petroleum ether extract of G. lucidum inhibited P. aeruginosa, S. aureus and E. coli with inhibition zones of 12.0 ± 0.01 mm, 11.0 ± 0.03 mm and 12.0 ± 0.02 mm. For Daedaleopsis confragosa, the aqeous extract inhibited P. aeruginosa and E. coli with inhibition zones of 12.0 ± 0.01 and 12.0 ± 0.02 mm respectively while the petroleum ether extract inhibited S. aureus and E. coli with inhibition zones of 19.0 ± 0.02 mm and 13.0 ± 0.01 mm respectively. All these inhibitions on clinical isolates are therefore attributed to the presence of some bioactive compound as shown by the phytochemical screening of the mushrooms which include tannins, phenolics, flavonoids and saponin.

The use of Levamisole hydrochloride as an immunostimulant has been successful in the control of certain diseases such as Derzsy’s disease in chicken as well as in increasing lymphocytes and weight gain in pigs. However, its use as immunostimulant in the prevention of Peste des petits ruminants (PPR) in goats has not been investigated. In this study, the use of Levamisole in enhancing immune response to PPR vaccination including its effects on weight gain was investigated among groups of goats (groups A, B, C and D). Virus neutralization test was used to determine the antibody profile in vaccinated goats while the total and differential leucocyte counts and body mass index (BMI) were determined using standard procedures. Goats in group A (Levamisole primed and PPR vaccinated) seroconverted to more than 3-folds of the initial pre-vaccination geometric mean titre (GMT) of neutralizing antibody beginning from second week post-vaccination and remained high throughout the period of the experiment. Similarly, there was significant increase (p 0.05) in BMI of animals in other groups throughout the period of the experiment. The results of this study further confirm the immunostimulatory effect of Levamisole when used in combination with a vaccine.

Effects of Depth of Needle Insertion with Risperidone Long-Acting Injectable in Persons with Schizophrenia: A Randomized Double-Blind Study

In some cases, if the insertion depth is shallower than expected, intramuscular (IM) injection of risperidone long-acting injectable (RLAI) may not penetrate the muscle fascia. However, if needle insertion depth is deeper than anticipated, needle penetration may cause damage to nerves, arteries and veins. Few clinical studies were done to evaluate the depth of needle length insertion reaching the intended gluteal muscle. The aim of this study was to evaluate the suitable depth of injecting RLAI. Twenty-six patients with schizophrenia were treated with RLAI, and randomly divided into two groups: 50 mm needle inserted group (Group-D, deep insertion, n = 13) and 20 mm needle insertion group (Group-S, shallow insertion, n = 13). For Group-S, the needle length was marked with a spacer at exactly 20 mm. Injections were performed by the psychiatrist or nurse, alternating between the two gluteal sites by double-cross method every two weeks. Clinical psychotic symptoms and injection site reactions were recorded throughout the study period. Experienced psychologists who were blinded from the needle-length experimental variable evaluated patients’ psychotic symptoms using the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) every two weeks. The plasma 9-hydroxyrisperidone (9-OH-RIS) concentrations were measured every two weeks;comparison data were determined on the 8th week and the 14th week. No significant difference was observed in 9-OH-RIS concentrations, psychotic symptoms, injection site skin reactions of subjects in both groups. However, in Group-D, injection site adverse reactions were confirmed in two subjects (15%). In Group-S, injection site reactions were confirmed in six subjects (46%). Although effective 9-OH-RIS concentrations were obtained with the insertion using both depth, it was concluded that the 50 mm insertion length was more suitable for dorsogluteal IM injections in adult patients with schizophrenia as demonstrated by the incidence of local adverse skin rea

世界各地都存在贫困问题,但非洲的贫困问题尤为严峻且影响广泛。在中国和一些发达经济体,贫困是发展的催化剂,但是非洲的情况恰恰相反。极端贫困是阻碍非洲取得实质性发展的主要原因,广泛存在的精神和物质贫困迟滞了非洲发展。然而,贫困并不是非洲独有的现象。中国改革开放前的贫困率曾高于同时期非洲的整体贫困率,但是在中国共产党的领导下,中国最终消除了绝对贫困,取得了脱贫攻坚的全面胜利。在非洲,贫困仍然是21世纪发展的最大障碍。因此,非洲各国和国际社会仍在探索非洲减贫和实现可持续发展的道路,而中国的脱贫战略和发展模式可以为非洲消除贫困提供借鉴。本文批判性地分析了非洲的贫困和发展问题,并阐释了中非关系如何能积极影响非洲减贫进程以及助力非洲在21世纪实现发展。

Improved β-cell function rather than increased insulin sensitivity is associated with reduction in hemoglobin A1c in newly diagnosed Type 2 diabetic patients treated with metformin

β-cell dysfunction and decreased insulin sensitivity are believed to be two chief mechanisms that participate in deterioration of glycemic control in Type 2 diabetes. Meformin is widely accepted as the first-line oral agent in the treatment of Type 2 diabetes. However, the relative contributions of improved β-cell function and increased insulin sensitivity to reduction in hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) are unclear in newly diagnosed Type 2 diabetic patients treated with metformin. We investigated β-cell function and insulin sensitivity in relation to reduction in HbA1c in 20 newly diagnosed Type 2 diabetic patients (17 men and 3 women, mean age 49.1 ± 10.1 years, mean body mass index 26.4 ± 5.2 kg/m2) treated with metformin for 16 weeks. We used homeostasis model assessment (HOMA) 2%B and HOMA2%S as estimates of β-cell function and insulin sensitivity, respectively. Median HOMA2%B and HOMA2%S significantly increased from 38.8 to 68.8 (p p = 0.004), respectively. In univariate regression analysis, reduction in HbA1c was highly correlated with change in HOMA2%B (r = -0.866, p < 0.001), but not with that in HOMA2%S (r = -0.264, p = 0.260). Furthermore, multivariate regression analysis with reduction in HbA1c as a dependent variable showed that increase in HOMA2%B but not that in HOMA2%S was a significant dependent variable (β = -0.847, p β-cell function rather than increased insulin sensitivity is associated with reduction in HbA1c. These results suggest that metformin reduces HbA1c chiefly through improved β-cell function rather than increased insulin sensitivity in patients with newly diagnosed Type 2 diabetes.

Carbohydrate Intake Is Correlated with the Glycated Albumin to Glycated Hemoglobin Ratio in Drug-Naive Patients with Type 2 Diabetes

Background: The glycated albumin (GA) to HbA1c ratio (GA/HbA1c ratio) has been reported to reflect postprandial hyperglycemia. Carbohydrate is the primary dietary macronutrient that causes postprandial hyperglycemia. Thus, we investigated whether carbohydrate intake was associated with the GA/HbA1c ratio in patients with type 2 diabetes. Methods: Daily energy intake and carbohydrate intake were estimated in twenty-two patients with type 2 diabetes who received no pharmacological therapy (18 men and 4 women, age 53 ± 11 years old). The energy index and the carbohydrate index were defined as the ratio of daily energy intake to body weight and daily carbohydrate intake to body weight, respectively. Results: The energy index was significantly correlated with the GA/HbA1c ratio (r = 0.451, p = 0.035), but not with fasting plasma glucose (FPG), HbA1c and GA. The carbohydrate index was significantly correlated with GA (r = 0.461, p = 0.031) and the GA/HbA1c ratio (r = 0.554, p = 0.007), but not with FPG and HbA1c. Multivariate analysis revealed that the carbohydrate index was independently associated with the GA/HbA1c ratio (β = 0.397, p = 0.046). Conclusions: The carbohydrate index was significantly correlated with GA and the GA/HbA1c ratio in the patients with type 2 diabetes. These results suggest that carbohydrate intake may be associated with the GA/HbA1c ratio through postprandial hyperglycemia.
