Intercontinental comparison of liana community assemblages in tropical forests of Ghana and Malaysia

Aims Liana research has increased in the past two decades,yet there is still inadequate comparison of liana communities at a cross-con-tinental *** compared liana assemblages in tropical forest ecosystems of Ghana and Malaysia,thereby determining patterns and mechanisms that are common or unique to the *** Liana diversity,community structure and taxonomic composition were determined in 60 plots of 40×40 m2 in three forest types(primary,disturbed secondary,selectively logged)in each biogeo-graphic *** traits,climbing mechanisms and dispersal modes were determined for all species and individuals via direct field observation and with published *** were analyzed at biogeographic(using combined forest data)and forest-type *** Findings Both observed and rarefied-extrapolated species richness of lianas were significantly higher in Ghanaian forests compared to Malaysian *** most cases,species diversity indices(Shannon diversity index,Margalef,Fisher’s alpha)showed significantly higher liana diversity at Ghanaian forests at biogeographic and forest-type ***,Ghanaian forests harbored significantly higher values of liana abundance and basal area than Malaysian forests at both biogeographic and forest-type *** taxonomic composition of lianas differed considerably between the two biogeographic areas at all levels,although similarity in composition increased at generic and family *** above-ground biomass of lianas was simi-lar between the two biogeographic regions,variations occurred at forest-type level between the two *** two biogeographic areas showed some similarities in assemblages of liana climbing *** more species of lianas were adapted for animal dispersal than other dispersal modes in both countries,the majority of liana individuals in Ghana were wind dispersed whereas the majority of liana individuals in Malaysia were animal *** speculate that the differ

Sequestration of toxic Pb(Ⅱ) ions by chemically treated rubber(Hevea brasiliensis) leaf powder

Rubber leaf powder （an agricultural waste） was treated with potassium permanganate followed by sodium carbonate and its performance in the removal of Pb（II） ions from aqueous solution was evaluated. The interactions between Pb（II） ions and functional groups on the adsorbent surface were confirmed by Fourier transform infrared （FT-IR） spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy （SEM） coupled with X-ray energy dispersive spectroscopy （EDX）. The effects of several important parameters which can affect adsorption capacity such as pH, adsorbent dosage, initial lead concentration and contact time were studied. The optimum pH range for lead adsorption was 4-5. Even at very low adsorbent dosage of 0.02 g, almost 100% of Pb（II） ions （23 mg/L） could be removed. The adsorption capacity was also dependent on lead concentration and contact time, and relatively a short period of time （60-90 min） was required to reach equilibrium. The equilibrium data were analyzed with Langmuir, Freundlich and Dubinin-Radushkevich isotherms. Based on Langmuir model, the maximum adsorption capacity of lead was 95.3 mg/g. Three kinetic models including pseudo first-order, pseudo second-order and Boyd were used to analyze the lead adsorption process, and the results showed that the pseudo second-order fitted well with correlation coefficients greater than 0.99.

A growth model for a hyalid amphipod Hyale perieri in the coastal water of Alexandria(Egypt)

The growth rate of the hyalid amphipod Hyale perieri was studied on the bases of Ikeda'sgrowth model which is based on the inter moult period (IP) and moult increament (△BL). To apply this approach, laboratory experiments were carried out at three temperatures regimes (15℃, 20℃, 25℃ ) to gain accurate data of IP and BL. The total number of specimens used in this study was 86 at 15℃ , 24 at 20℃ and 70 at 25℃. The number of flagellar segments of both antennae of the Hyale perieri could not be used as an index of growth (instar criterion). The obtained results indicated that, the predicted IP of the specimens was inversely related to temperature and in good agreement with the observed values at the experimental temperatures. IP data obtained from laboratory-reared specimes are combined with ABL data to establish a growth model for Hyale perieri from its release from the mar-supium (1.64 mm BL ) to the maximum size (12.67 mm BL) as a function of temperature. The maximum numbers of consecutive moults recorded during the experiment were 13 moults (14 instar) at 15℃, 14 moults (15 instar) at 20℃ and 12 moults (13 instar) at 25℃ . The predicted life span for BL = 12.67 mm (moult 13) was 203.82 d at 15t, for BL = 11.75 mm (moult 14) was 138.94 d at 20℃ and for BL = 8.65 mm (moult 12) was 75.40 d at 25℃ respectively, thus confirming that the life span of the species is inversely proportional to temperature. Within the experimental temperatures tested, the optimum temperature for the growth of the species was 20℃.

New Pore Pressure Evaluation Techniques for LAGIA-8 Well, Sinai, Egypt as a Case Study

Drilling into a geopressured zone will generally cause a change in a number of basic formation/ drilling relationships. This change is usually seen as a reversal of a gradual depth related trend in a lithologically uniform formation. Of all the geophysical methods, the reflection seismic method is essentially the only technique used to predict pore pressures. The seismic method detects changes of interval velocity with depth from velocity analysis of the seismic data. These changes are in turn related to lithology, pore fluid type, rock fracturing and pressure changes within a stratigraphic column. When the factors affecting the velocity are understood for a given area, a successful pressure prediction can be made. For clastic environments such as the Tertiary section of the Gulf of Mexico or the Niger delta, the interval velocity of the rocks increases with depth because of compaction. In these areas, deviations from normal compaction trends are related to abnormally high pore pressures. The adapted methods provide a much easier way to handle normal compaction trend lines. In addition to well log methods, pressure detection can be obtained via drilling parameters by applying Eaton’s DXC methods. Seismic velocities have long been used to estimate pore pressure, indeed both these quantities are influenced by variations in rock properties such as porosity, density, effective stress and so on, and high pore pressure zones are often associated with low seismic velocities. Pressure prediction from seismic data is based on fundamentals of rock physics and seismic attribute analysis. This paper hence tries to assess the use of seismic waves as a viable means to calculate pore pressure, especially in areas where no prior drilling history can be found. Outcomes of curative liver resection for hepatocellular carcinoma in patients with cirrhosis
