Aqueous extracts of microalgae exhibit antioxidant and anticancer activities

Objective:To investigate the antioxidant and anticancer activities of aqueous extracts of nine microalgal ***:Variable percentages of major secondary metabolites(total phenolic content,terpenoids and alkaloids) as well as phycobiliprotein pigments(phycocyanin, allophycocyanin and phycoerythrin) in the aqueous algal extracts were *** activity of the algal extracts was performed using 2,2 diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl(DPPH) test and 2,2'azino-bis(ethylbenzthiazoline-6-sulfonic acid(ABTS.) radical cation *** efficiency of the algal water extracts was investigated against Ehrlich Ascites Carcinoma cell(EACC) and Human hepatocellular cancer cell line(HepG2).Results:Antioxidant activity of the algal extracts was performed using DPPH test and ABTS.^+ radical cation assays which revealed 30.1-72.4%and 32.0-75.9%*** efficiency of the algal water extracts was investigated against Ehdich Ascites Carcinoma Cell(EACC) and Human Hepatocellular cancer cell line(HepG2) with an activity ranged 87.25%and 89.4%*** the promising cyanobacteria species;Nostoc muscorum and Oscillatoria *** nitrogen stress conditions(increasing and decreasing nitrate content of the normal BG11 medium,1.5 g/L),increased nitrate concentration(3,6 and 9 g/L) led to a remarkable increase in phycobilin pigments followed by an increase in both antioxidant and anticancer activities in both cyanobacterial *** the decreased nitrate concentration(0.75,0.37 and 0.0 g/L) induced an obvious decrease in phycobilin pigments with complete absence of allophycocyanin in case of Oscillatoria ***:Nitrogen starvation(0.00 g/L nitrate) induced an increase and comparable antioxidant and anticancer activities to those cultured in the highest nitrate content.

Exercise Training Post Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy Improves Exercise Tolerance and Quality of Life

Background: Cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) results in improved morbidity, mortality, symptoms, quality of life (QOL) and exercise capacity, in appropriate chronic heart failure (CHF) patients. Moreover, combined exercise training (ET) and CRT maximize these improvements in these patients. The study evaluated the effect of ET on these patients in terms of QOL, functional class, exercise capacity and left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF). Results: There were significant improvements in the QOL, functional class, exercise capacity, and LVEF compared with the Control Group. Comparison of both groups confirmed the cumulative effects of ET with CRT. The QOL improved by the end of training in the exercise group (p = 0.001), compared to the Control Group (p = 0.850). NYHA functional class improved significantly in the Exercise Group (p = 0.013). Percent-predicted peak oxygen consumption (VO2 peak) had significantly improved in the trained (p 0.001) versus the untrained CRT

Diagnostic value of a panel of tumor markers as a part of a diagnostic work-up for ascites of unknown etiology

Background & objectives: Data regarding tumor marker usefulness in diagnosing ascites of unknown etiology and determining its malignant nature are conflicting. We aim to assess the diagnostic value of ascitic and serum tumor markers in ascites of unknown etiology and to evaluate their usefulness besides other laboratory tests in a diagnostic work-up in those patients. Design & setting: A prospective case-control study conducted at Assiut University hospital and oncology institute. Patients & Methods: Three groups were included;Group I: 41 patients with ascites of unknown etiology Group II: 7 Patients with TB ascites and Group III:14 patients with cirrhotic ascites. We assessed the CEA, CEA mRNA, CA15-3, CA19.9, CA125, AFP and PSA in serum and ascetic fluid. A diagnostic work-up for group I included: IPD test, ultrasound, CT, ascetic fluid cytology, SAAG, Laparotomy and biopsy. Results: Ascetic fluid and serum levels of CA15-3 and CA125 were significantly increased in group I and were significantly increased in histopathologically proved malignant ascites compared to TB and cirrhotic ascites. In group I, CA 125 was significantly higher in ascites than serum. With the exception of PSA, all tumor markers significantly correlated in serum and ascetic fluid. No significant difference in the level of ascetic CEA messenger RNA was detected between the 3 groups. Cytology had 53% sensitivity, 94% specificity and CA 125 & CA15-3 had 81% sensitivity and 75% specificity in detection of malignant ascites repectively. Laparotomy and biopsy: diagnosed malignnancy in 53.3% and TB in 13.3%. Conclusions: A diagnostic work-up including SAAG, tumor markers in the serum and ascetic fluid may help in adjunct with ascetic fluid cytology, laparotomy and biopsy, imag- ing and other laboratory tests in diagnosing ascites of unknown etiology.
